Protecting Critical Infrastructure in India - Teesta Urja III 1200 MW Hydroelectric Power Plant

Due to the incredibly strong forces of hydro power produced in the Himalaya Mountain Region of India's Sikkim state, much of the 1200 MW power plant's concrete structures are exposed to ultra-extreme abrasion. Water, rocks, and boulders the size of bulldozers can reach speeds of 20 meters/s and regularly damage an excess of 30% of the plant's concrete structures. Our team was asked to test, develop, produce, and deliver a 100% polyelastomeric coating to withstand the expected abrasion and protect the concrete to minimize the cost of re-work after yearly rainy seasons. A unique feature of the problem set was creating an aromatic formula capable of application in ultra wet environments - an industry first. We worked for over 1 year along with Indian-based infrastructure teams, concrete manufacturers, and BASF to develop the polyurea solution. I was the lead manager on the project for a total of 1.5 years through inception, development of the product, and shipment of over 25 40' containers of equipment/chemical. Along with 3 incredibly talented polyurea applicators, we spent 25 days in India to train locals in Sikkim, India to manage and complete the project.
