John Pavley shared thisI'm very proud to share that my daughter, Alyssa Bianca-Pavley, was published in the Evergreen Review. Her short story, The Assistant, is an exploration of the assistant/manager relationship. We don't often admit how meaningful and important that relationship is to our success as leaders. Assistants rarely get the kudos or credit they deserve in dealing with demanding "bosses." Alyssa's story is not a dry HBR but a piece of creative writing that gave me insight into what it's like to be "the" assistant! https://lnkd.in/e6pzPk4S BTW, you should checkout all the stories and art in the Evergreen Review. It's been around since the late 1950s and has published the works of many of the most important writers in the 20th and 21st century. These works can be challenging but that's what great art does.

It's poetic how things sometimes come together! I left Nickelodeon to focus on myself and to build a career focused around creating and directing content. I wanted to try own things in my own way- to bring the best principles of product development to a creative process. Lean, agile, iterative and, occasionally, disruptive. After 4 years, I'm reuniting with Cyma Zarghami to launch a new series! As president of Nickelodeon, it was her idea to create the NOGGIN streaming service which I was tasked with. It's super super cool to be working with her again in new roles with new ideas but the same mission- to make the childhood experience as magical and enriching as possible! Techniques built into strongly typed languages, like polymorphism, that enable us to solve business problems with types and enable compilers to validate the use of types and subtypes in our code are the techniques that Liskov invented, prototyped, demonstrated, and delivered. John Pavley liked thisJohn Pavley liked thisWe were about to be acquired by Yahoo for $200 million. Then one sentence in a contract ended it. This was Myplay, my first company. We built a music locker on the web, back before iTunes or the iPod, when the best you could do was cram 50 songs onto a tiny MP3 player. The idea for Myplay was simple. You own the CD, so you should be able to unlock the digital version and stream it to yourself, anywhere. We built it the right way, following the streaming rules the record labels set out. Napster and a competitor called mp3. com ignored those rules and got sued. We didn't. We scaled to millions of users, and Yahoo wanted to buy us. We were deep into the process, deal terms agreed, everyone assuming it was happening. It had even leaked to the press. My co-founder, David Pakman, flew out to California with his wife for what was supposed to be a big celebratory weekend. Then the Wednesday before, the president of Yahoo called me. Not to close the deal. To kill it. Buried in a partnership contract we had with AOL, who'd been promoting us inside their music player Winamp, was language that would require any acquirer to keep paying AOL millions of dollars per year in perpetuity. Basically a poison pill to keep AOL competitors from buying us. We didn't write that contract, and we didn't notice it at the time. A lawyer who'd been swapped into that AOL deal for us late hadn't properly checked the redlines, and AOL was pushing us to sign quickly. We should have caught it. We didn't. So our Yahoo deal collapsed over that one line. We ended up selling to Bertelsmann months later instead, but that Wednesday call gave me some of my first gray hairs. Trust, but always verify. Read every contract line by line, especially the ones that feel like a formality. And the moment someone's pressuring you to sign fast, that is exactly when you slow down.

John Pavley liked thisJohn Pavley liked thisJust back from Ai4 2026 in Las Vegas. Three days, 12,000+ people, and one thing I keep coming back to: the experts don’t agree, and that’s the point. The headline panel put Geoffrey Hinton, Fei-Fei Li and Andrew Ng on one stage, and they split openly on almost everything that matters. A few things I’m taking home: - The jobs debate needs less prophecy, more data. Ng cited one large company’s internal survey where only 1.4% of workers touched by an AI rollout were actually replaced. Li’s framing stuck with me: every job is a bundle of tasks, and AI redistributes them rather than deleting them. But productivity gains don’t automatically become shared prosperity. - Regulation isn’t the brake. Hinton pushed back on the accelerator versus brake metaphor entirely and called it the steering wheel. Li argued for sector by sector rules built on the frameworks we already have in health, finance and transport, instead of one sweeping law. - Security is now an AI problem, not an AI adjacent one. Between self adapting LLM driven worms and agents escaping their sandboxes, the exhibit floor’s agentic demos looked very different after that session. - Nobody’s asking “should we use AI” anymore. Every serious conversation was about reliability in production: evals, guardrails, ownership. The gap between demo and deployment is where the real work is. Grateful for the conversations. Now the harder part: turning notes into a plan. #Ai42026

John Pavley liked thisJohn Pavley liked thisI'm happy to share that I've recently joined AI HOUSE as CEO. My career has been in technology from the start. I still remember the dial-up era - when some of us were sharing a single account for internet access, hunting for community in early forums, chatrooms, IRC, and ICQ. I later spent over a decade at U.S. companies including HuffPost, AOL/Verizon, Group Nine Media, and MongoDB. Along the way I also co-founded a startup as CTO; we didn't reach profitability or close a round, but it's what pulled me permanently toward building things from the ground up. Shortly before the full-scale invasion, I moved back to Ukraine and wanted to put that experience toward something larger than myself. That became AidSupply, a platform for faster, more transparent coordination of humanitarian aid between donors, local organizations, and businesses. I later joined Nova Ukraine, an international relief foundation, as CTO, working to modernize internal processes and infrastructure at scale. What ties all of this together is something simple: the ability to organize people around a shared goal is what lets us solve problems no individual could solve alone. I spent the last few years doing that around a humanitarian mission. I want to spend the next few doing it around Ukraine's AI ecosystem. That's why, when the opportunity to join AI HOUSE came up, I didn't hesitate. It's a community I've followed and respected for years, and I believe this is where I can contribute the most right now. AI HOUSE has built a strong, well-recognized brand and earned real trust across the community as a result of its former leadership and the team's dedication. It's brought together thousands of people who believe in Ukraine's AI future, connecting the AI/ML community, business, academia, and government. My role now is to carry that forward, keeping AI HOUSE positioned at the technological frontier. We have new initiatives in the works for this fall, and I'll be sharing more details soon. Now ADWEEK reports that some of the biggest media businesses are not-so-quietly making plans to disappear from it. This isn't just one angry newspaper. The Wall Street Journal lists USA Today, Reuters, Politico, The Economist and People Inc. among the publishers who are considering cutting off Google. And Cloudflare, which sits in front of a fifth of the web, is flipping its defaults to block the crawlers that scrape for both search and AI training. What changed? Publishers have always known this dependence was a risk. This is not a revelation. What changed is that the relationship has stopped being a two-way exchange. It’s lopsided. Neil Vogel, CEO of People Inc., calls Google an "intentional bad actor" for using the same crawler for both search and AI, but he admits People still can't block it without losing the search traffic it depends on. People Inc is "probably heading towards more confrontation than productivity." (I've watched Vogel speak a few times recently and he inspires confidence. He seems to have a firm grasp of the industry and an actual plan.) This Google trap is why the open web matters. It isn’t because of nostalgia or a blind love of all things open source. It’s because ownership and portability increases resilience. Traffic comes and goes. Ownership compounds. But the sharp media newsletter A Media Operator makes the case that "No One is Going to Block Google" and the math backs them up. When a publisher still gets over 40% of its traffic from search, walking away from Google is a top-line bloodbath. Google's Liz Reid reinforces the symbiotic relationship: "Search is not a useful product if the web is not a thriving product." And Future's Mike Peralta asserts: "[AI is] nothing but a hallucination without our content." The industry is also too fragmented for everyone to leave Google all at once, and that's the only version where blocking actually moves Google. So will publishers push the big red button? I doubt it, and it doesn’t really matter if a few of them do. The preparation is the actual prize here. Building newsletters, direct audience, licensing revenue, and owned infrastructure makes you stronger whether you ever block a single crawler or not. Silicon Valley has a word for this: antifragile, systems that get stronger under stress.The exercise of getting ready to survive without Google is exactly what makes you the kind of business that never has to. The goal isn’t to leave Google. The goal is to build a business that could if it has to, and no longer has to care whether it does.

Avoiding Claude Code because the terminal feels intimidating? Cowork changes that. Same power, zero command line. Anthropic released Cowork today and I've been testing it. Here's what makes it different: Cowork lets Claude interact with your computer through a visual interface. No typing commands. No scary black screens. What you can actually do with it: - Organize messy file folders automatically - Turn a pile of receipts into a clean spreadsheet - Draft reports by pulling data from multiple documents - Rename hundreds of files based on patterns - Create presentations from raw research notes This is Claude Code's capability through a visual interface. The same parallel processing that developers use, but accessible to non-technical users through Claude desktop. Worth exploring if you spend hours on repetitive computer work.
