Starting as an MBA intern, I was energized by the opportunity to help millions of people take control of their financial lives, whether it be helping potential customers find the right credit card, empowering mobile developers to ship faster, or making it easier for customers to view, block, and cancel recurring payments from their mobile app. I'm grateful for everything I got to build here, and even more grateful for the talented, thoughtful, and fun people I got to build it with. James Kepner liked thisJames Kepner liked thisEarlier this year I built one of my first prototypes for what I thought an AI-native marketing product could look like. The idea was simple: instead of putting a chatbot next to the product, I tried embedding the intelligence throughout the experience of actually doing the work. I showed it to my VP at the time, someone I consider a genuinely brilliant product executive, and their first question was: “Where’s the AI?” The funny thing was that the AI was everywhere. What the product didn’t have was a giant chat box. I’ve thought about that conversation a lot as I’ve spent more time building AI products. I think we have quietly started treating AI-first and chat-first as the same thing. AI looks like a box you type into, so when we build agentic products, our instinct is often to start with the conversation. I’m increasingly convinced that is the wrong starting point for a lot of work. Chat is genuinely great when I know what I want, can describe the outcome, and am happy to let the agent go do the work and come back with an answer. But work that requires real-time collaboration is different. Creative work in particular is messy, iterative, and subjective. A designer may ask an agent to “make this design bolder,” see the result, and realize that is not what they meant at all. That does not necessarily mean the agent failed. Sometimes seeing the output is how the person figures out what they wanted in the first place. That is where the turn-by-turn nature of chat starts to feel limiting. In creative work, trying something, reacting to it, iterating, and occasionally changing direction are not detours on the way to the answer. They are part of the journey of getting there. The more I have worked through this, the less convinced I am that chat should be the default UX for all agentic work. I actually think traditional UI is going to make a comeback in agentic products. Not because chat goes away, but because a lot of work is still better organized visually, spatially, and around the thing being made. The interesting design problem is going to be figuring out how agents show up contextually inside those interfaces, helping at the right moment without forcing every interaction back through a chat box. I wrote the longer version about how we ended up here, what coding agents get right, why blank chat boxes can be particularly bad for beginners, and why I’m starting to question how much of our work we should be trying to automate in the first place.
