Gamiel Gran posted thisThe better AI becomes at writing code, the more I find myself thinking about what we're really asking engineers to own. For years, writing the code was inseparable from building the product. Now an AI agent can take on more of that implementation, which means some of the most important human work moves earlier in the process. What are we trying to build? How should it behave? What boundaries should it respect? This is why Spec-Driven Development caught my attention. Instead of relying on a prompt and reviewing whatever comes back, teams define the intent and architectural constraints first. The specification becomes a shared understanding between the engineer and the agent, carrying those decisions through implementation and validation. We're already seeing this thinking take shape through tools like GitHub's Spec Kit and Amazon's Kiro. For CIOs, I believe there's something deeper here than another development methodology. Imagine an enterprise where multiple agents are writing software simultaneously. Speed becomes abundant, while clarity becomes precious. Someone still has to understand the business well enough to express what should be built. Someone still has to make the architectural decisions that hold everything together. And someone has to exercise judgment when the answer generated by the machine looks perfectly reasonable but feels wrong. That human responsibility becomes more important as we delegate more execution to AI. Perhaps the future of software engineering will be defined as much by how clearly we can express intent as by how quickly we can produce code.

Gamiel Gran shared thisI keep coming back to one prediction on this list. As AI becomes more capable, organizations may actually begin testing people on what they can do without it. There's something important in that tension. We want AI to extend what people are capable of, while preserving the curiosity and judgment that allow us to recognize when an answer deserves another question. In my conversations with CIOs, I hear a real desire to get this right. AI fluency is becoming part of how we prepare people for the future, but fluency should also mean knowing when to lean on the technology and when to lean on yourself. Gartner gives us plenty to think about here. The more capable our tools become, the more intentional we'll need to be about developing the humans using them.

Gamiel Gran shared thisI've spent a lot of time with CIOs throughout my career, and I believe AI is giving them one of the greatest opportunities they've had to shape the future of their companies. Navin Chaddha captures it well. The CIO is becoming the person who helps turn intelligence into an enterprise capability, creating the foundation that allows people across the organization to build with AI confidently. What I find especially exciting is the human side of this mandate. Someone still has to decide where AI belongs and how it should work alongside people. Those decisions require judgment and a deep understanding of the business. The CIO has an opportunity to become the connective tissue that brings all of this together. For the leaders ready to embrace that responsibility, this could be one of the most defining chapters of their careers.Gamiel Gran shared thisAI is giving the CIO a bigger mandate than ever before. This week’s Spotlight is: The Future CIO For decades, IT meant keeping the lights on: uptime, networks, devices, enterprise apps, and SLA compliance. The asset was infrastructure, and the function was judged on cost and ticket volume. In the AI era, the assets become data, models, and workflows, and the job moves from "we manage systems" to "we enable intelligence across the enterprise." The future CIO runs that system. They sit alongside the CTO, the CDO, and the CFO as a business co-creator and transformation leader, and the defining question changes from "are systems stable and secure?" to "is the company becoming AI-native, safely and fast enough?" The CIO's five roles in the AI era: 1. Enterprise AI Orchestrator - Decide which AI models are used and where 2. Owner of the AI Stack - Own the AI stack across data, models, applications, security, and governance 3. Enabler with Guardrails - Enable AI adoption with approved tools, policies, and platforms 4. Risk Owner, the CISO dimension - Govern AI security, risk, reliability, and compliance 5. Architect of the Human + AI Workforce - Design how humans and AI work together across the enterprise Agents take over execution, but the advantage still belongs to the leader who sets direction, defines standards, and governs trust, security, and risk across all models and agents. The CIOs who come out of this strongest will build the fastest, safest way for their company to use AI: a platform company within the company, where a small, high-caliber team enables everyone else to build safely. Their orgs will be flatter and more leveraged, their governance will be strong without being slow, and the function will shift from managing systems to enabling intelligence across the enterprise. The question for every CIO: Are you becoming the fastest, safest way for your company to use AI, or the gatekeeper it routes around? Below, we round up the signals that shaped the week: AT&T running open models for a quarter of its AI usage at 45 billion tokens a day, IBM putting OpenAI's models inside its global consulting business and training tens of thousands of consultants to deploy them, Mistral hosting third-party open models under the same regional controls it applies to its own, and Anthropic adding machine-readable watermarks to Claude output as EU rules reshape products well beyond Europe. Power is becoming one of AI’s biggest constraints. Hyperscalers are committing hundreds of billions of dollars to AI infrastructure, yet power availability remains a major constraint. Gamiel Gran shared thisSome of the conversations I value most are the ones that give me a new way of looking at a problem I thought I understood. Our recent Mythos AI-Cyber discussion with Chris Nims did exactly that. AI gives attackers the ability to see connections across a codebase that were once incredibly difficult to find. Hearing how Capital One is applying that same capability on defense made the possibilities feel much more tangible. Their VulnHunter pilot uncovered thousands of previously unknown vulnerabilities, with roughly 80% automatically remediated through AI-generated fixes and verification. For me, the real opportunity is what this could mean for the people building software every day. Imagine giving a developer the ability to understand risk as they create and address it while the context is still fresh. Security becomes part of the craft of building great software, making developers an even more important part of the defense. I came away with a much broader view of AI's potential in cybersecurity. You've put your finger on a challenge I think many enterprises are only beginning to fully appreciate. Agents introduce a kind of fluidity into identity that forces us to rethink what trust and access should look like when permissions can change in the middle of a task. I suspect the organizations getting ahead of this now will save themselves some very difficult conversations later.

So much infrastructure is being built while enterprise adoption is still finding its footing, which is why I agree we're much earlier in this AI cycle than the headlines often suggest. The opportunity ahead is enormous once more of those real-world use cases begin to take hold.
