One session showed the fastest growing healthcare occupations through 2034 per BLS projections. Nurse practitioners at 40%. Physical therapists, PAs, psychiatric technicians, behavioral health counselors, and home health aides right behind. Nursing has Nursys. Most of that list has nothing like it, and even NPs need more than a license check once you add prescriptive authority and certification. So the market is growing fastest exactly where verification is most fragmented. Board by board, registry by registry, and when a source has not gone digital you are back to phone, fax, or the mail. Another session said the part nobody says out loud. Joint Commission is baseline, not differentiation. Passing audits keeps you in the room. It does not win you anything. Put those together and credentialing drag stops being an ops complaint. It is margin, and it gets worse exactly as agencies move into the segments they are being told to move into. That is the problem we solve at KarmaCheck. Screening, occupational health, and primary source verification built for healthcare rather than adapted to it. I turned 38 this week, so I'm running out of eligibility and figured I'd finally mention it 😊 It's my second time on the list, and so much has changed in the last 6 years since the first. In 2020 it was for scaling a staffing operation at Trusted Health. This one is for the technology side of the business, which got added to my scope in 2024 even though I'm not an engineer. It worked because operations and engineering stopped being two separate organizations. AI is handling a larger share of the work now, including decisions that used to need a person, which frees our recruiting teams to spend more time with clinicians. Huge thanks to Srinivas Nallangi, Marcelo Silveira, Spenser Coke, Lindsey Lansky, Chelsea Rolfes, BSN, RN and many more for building this with me, and to their teams for doing the work!

If you break that trust once? You're gone. I don't give second chances. Kass is different. She'll give you responsibilities, but you have to earn her full trust. You can earn it in a lot of ways, but she's not handing over the farm on day one. Neither approach is wrong. My way is faster. Hers is safer. I get burned sometimes. She rarely does. But together? We cover each other. I move fast and make bets. She protects the downside and makes sure we don't get overexposed. Thirty years of marriage and business. Two approaches. One partnership that works. Do you trust first, or make people earn it?

We built it from scratch, grew it into one of the leading healthcare VMS platforms in the country, and sold it to Onward Healthcare in 2009. It was a great outcome. And it taught me something I couldn't see clearly until I was on the other side of it: One of the first things the new owners wanted to know was when we would start prioritizing their candidates on our clients. We pushed back and explained that would be extremely difficult considering we had spent the last six years advocating for neutrality and the inclusion of any vendor the client wanted to work with. When a staffing company owns the technology managing a hospital's vendor program, the technology will always serve two masters. No matter how well-intentioned the team, the incentives don't fully align in the best interests of the client. That conflict bothered me enough to build something new. @Simpliant is my answer — a platform that does everything a modern healthcare workforce program needs, owned by nobody in the staffing supply chain. I'm not here to criticize agency-owned VMS platforms or what we built at Medefis. I'm here because I believe health systems, along with the skilled agencies that operate MSP programs on their behalf, deserve better than what the market has offered since AMN began the shift toward agency-owned VMS platforms through its acquisitions of ShiftWise in 2014 and Medefis in 2015. As long as the vendor-owned MSP is fully transparent about vendor performance and everything that goes into the bill rate the neutral model isn't always best, but that's rarely the case. There are vendors like Ingenovis Health, GQR Healthcare, Uniti Med, Greenstaff Medical USA, VieMed Healthcare, WorkVi Solutions, and Windsor Healthcare Recruitment Group to name a few, who have taken a more non-clinical enterprise level approach (think Guidant Global) to MSP by designing their offering to meet the needs of the client and then inserting the VMS that best fits those needs regardless of who the VMS is. In this model, the hospital wins, and the MSP earns a long-term partner. Over the next few months, I'll be sharing what I've learned over the last 25 years about healthcare workforce technology, where the market is going, and what good actually looks like. There's no App Store yet for tools like Lovable or Cursor. We're early. I talk to a lot of founders building AI companies. The ones I worry about are building what I call LLM wrappers. Products that slap a nice interface on top of ChatGPT or Claude without adding real differentiation. You're competing against every other wrapper, and the underlying models keep improving. Your competitive edge vanishes overnight. But if you're solving a real problem with a clear edge? Go for it. There's a catch though. You need to know how you'll get customers from day one. The AI space is brutally competitive. Distribution has to be part of the plan, not an afterthought. The best AI founders I meet know exactly who their customers are, where to find them, and why they'll pay. That's the difference between a demo and a business. What's your plan for getting customers?

When I started my first internet company at 19, there were only 13 million people online. No commercial browser. Yahoo was organizing the web with humans. There was no playbook. No guarantee it would work. But it felt like it was going to be big. So I started. U-Wire merged with Student Advantage and went public. → Then came Golf.com. → Then Buddy Media. → Then investing in other founders. Once I started, I never stopped. The idea of retiring terrifies most entrepreneurs I know. Building is our identity. It's our purpose. It's how we process the world. It's who we are. Some people golf to relax. Some people travel. Entrepreneurs build. We don't do it for the exit. We do it because we can't imagine doing anything else. What keeps you building?

I'm incredibly grateful for my time leading Corporate Development at Cross Country Healthcare and for the opportunity to work alongside so many talented colleagues. Over the past several years, we completed acquisitions, built strategic partnerships, expanded into new markets, and helped position the company for this next chapter.
