It is one of the best examples of hands-on engineering you'll find anywhere: ambitious teams, tight deadlines, limited resources, and an incredible amount of ingenuity. As Siemens Digital Industries Software, we're proud to support many of these teams with the same engineering software that is used across industry, from CFD, FEM, CAD and systems simulation to data management and digital engineering workflows. Of course, not every engineering discussion needs to be serious. Last year, a slightly oversized duck made a splash at our booth by showcasing detailed CFD analysis when jumping into a pond. What started as a joke somehow became a popular meme-stickers at the event. This year, the duck has expanded its skill set. Apparently, CFD wasn't enough. Craig Conlee liked thisCraig Conlee liked thisLIGHTNING MCQUEEN AERO ANALYSIS I met the 7 Time Piston Cup Champion a few weeks ago, here’s what I found out… Lightning McQueen is an inspiration to myself and many others of a similar age. So it was a pleasure to meet him in person and see what makes him so unique. The characteristic which immediately stands out is the large rear spoiler, but it isn’t particularly effective. This is because the roofline around the top of his ‘head’ is very steep and leads to separation, something which is shown in CFD conducted by the talented Seth Dillard. In fact the only areas of the spoiler that are pressurised are the extremities due to his large wheel arches. This makes Lightning very unstable as his floor is not being worked hard enough, made worse by the losses from his mouth; a factor that changes depending on his expression. One thing that was interesting in this area though, was the yaw stabilisers on his roof. These weren’t present in the CFD simulation, but perhaps he just hadn’t had a haircut. Furthermore, I couldn’t find out if those NACA Ducts acted as his ear; perhaps someone in the know could share in the comments. Either way, junction losses form thise would only hit the large spoiler so not a big issue. As for tyre wake management, it is pretty standard for older NASCAR actually. The wheel arches are actually sculpted in a way that outwashes Squirt to an extent and the Side Exhausts blow the area in front of the rear contact patch, reducing drag here. So, overall, an interesting philosophy which at first seems flawed. However, when you take into account that he is a cartoon, it all makes sense. Let me explain 😉 I've mentioned before that jump rope training is part of my routine. Here's the full story behind my DIY jump ropes: During COVID, I got into jump rope training as part of my HIIT routine. At first, I was really bad. But I kept at it until I found my rhythm. Then I started looking at professional jump ropes. They ranged from 60 to 500 grams, some brands were incredibly expensive, and they kept breaking because of the plastic coating around the cable. That's when my physicist brain kicked in: I went to the hardware store and stood in the electrical cable section, testing different cables while other shoppers probably wondered what I was doing 😀 I was checking for weight and stiffness to find the right balance. And they come in various colors too. Turns out, cables in the 80-220 gram range for the rope in my length, which is appr. 300 cm, work perfectly. How I build them: - Buy electrical cable at the hardware store (~50 cents per meter) - Test for the right weight (25-75 grams per meter works best) - Cut to the length I need, and close them with a little loop using a cable tie - Attach them with very small carabiners to proper handles (those you do have to buy) The result: Fully customizable and practically indestructible. And I can make a new one anytime. Now they're part of my daily split training routine. Six mornings a week, mixing weights with jump rope intervals between sets. It keeps me energized and ready for whatever the day brings. Sometimes the best solutions aren't expensive, branded ones. Sometimes it's worth building something yourself. Extreme Thermal Management: Managing exhaust temperatures exceeding 900^\circ\text{C} inches away from sensitive carbon fiber composites, electronics, and hydraulic lines requires advanced heat shielding and localized thermal insulation. 2. Volumetric Packaging Efficiency: Every millimeter of internal space is optimized. Shrinking the internal components allows for tighter sidepod shrinking, directly feeding high-energy airflow to the rear beam wing and diffuser. 3. Internal Flow Balancing: Cold cooling air entering through the airbox and sidepods must be routed with minimum pressure drop across radiators before being ejected downstream to minimize internal aerodynamic drag. When tenths of a second are won by bodywork tightness, the real magic happens in how engineers manage internal heat rejection without compromising external aerodynamic efficiency.
