Michael Coates liked thisMichael Coates liked thisStripe now works with more than 5 million businesses directly or via platforms. This includes all the top AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic many of the largest blue-chip companies like Microsoft (90% of the Dow Jones Industrial Average), and most of the biggest tech companies (80% of the Nasdaq 100). The internet economy is speeding up: these businesses generated $1.9 trillion in total volume last year, up 34% from 2024, roughly 1.6% of global GDP. In this year’s annual letter we share that most businesses are still operating in what we call “low revenue mode,” running on unoptimized payments infrastructure that’s leaking dollars left, right, and center. We want businesses to run on “high revenue mode” with a checkout that adapts differently to each customer. This involves pricing products in local currency and offering the right set of the hundreds of local payment methods that are most relevant. To support this, we shared over 350 product updates in the past year. Many are powered by a decade-long investment in AI, including our Payments Foundation Model and products like Stripe Radar or Optimized Checkout Suite. It was a full page image in the City College of San Francisco course catalog that year (back in the day when we printed those things!). I was taking a surveying class when I was considering either a Civil Engineering track or just taking a job doing surveying. I was working my way through college and wasn't sure what I wanted to do. I had a knack for math and science. I was that student that would do the extra credit exercises just for fun. I was a teacher's assistant for Physics when I had a chat with my professor about not knowing what to do... She recommended considering a tech career where I could go travel and do public speaking. I was completely dumbfounded by this recommendation at the time and thought she was completely insane. I would have rather jumped out of a plane than to speak in front of an audience. I wish I could ask her now what crystal ball she had at the time she recommended that to me. Not all careers follow a straight path and I am grateful for the many adventures I've had so far that have literally taken me all over the world. I continue to learn and explore and hopefully invent again. Ever grateful to Geisce Ly, Ph.D. at CCSF for taking the time last month to find this photo in their school archives after I inadvertently recycled my catalog last year. It was the very best 🌲 present. And many thanks to the physics professor who planted that seed in my head about my future so many years ago.
