Blake Stockman posted thisI'm excited to share that my article "The California Effect's New Frontier: How a Single State Became the De Facto Regulator of National Animal Welfare Policy After Ross" has been selected for publication in Lewis & Clark Law School's Animal Law Review in early 2027. The title is a bit of a doozy, but it talks about the voter-led animal welfare regulations appearing out of my home state of California. Absent federal regulation, the huge market of California becomes such a gravitational force that it changes national regulatory landscapes across many sectors such as emissions and A.I. (the well documented "California Effect" from Professor David Vogel). I make the argument that after the U.S. Supreme Court's fractured opinion in National Pork Producers Council v. Ross in 2023, animal welfare is one of its newest iterations. I lay out a framework of what federal action should look like to set a floor for farm animal welfare standards going forward. This is an evolving space with active legislation making its way through Congress now. This is a topic close to home having grown up in the country surrounded by farm animals where my first job was feeding horses. I'm excited to share more about this upon its publication.

Blake Stockman posted thisI'm excited to announce that after a great summer, I'll be returning to Nixon Peabody LLP as a legal intern this fall and as an associate after I take the bar exam next year! I'll be joining their labor and employment practice group focusing primarily on litigation. The group aligns well with my past experience in recruiting and the space is constantly evolving as the labor markets are changing at an unprecedented pace. A great combo which makes it an ideal place to build the next stage of my career. Now to start my final year of law school. Time flies.

Blake Stockman shared thisLast week I wrapped up an incredible summer at Nixon Peabody LLP, where I dug into substantive work across commercial litigation, labor & employment, trademark disputes, AI and privacy, and civil rights litigation. There was no shortage of new challenges and the experience was exactly what I wanted from my second law school summer. Thank you to everyone at the firm who made the summer special, and in particular to Brady McMillin, Seth Horvath, Maggie Boschelli, David Pattee, and Sarah K. Quinn for their guidance and trust. My fellow summers (pictured) were a brilliant and talented group as well that made the summer special. I continue to be humbled by the opportunity to learn and make such a big change at this stage of my career. What a joy! Now for my final year of law school.

Stacie Collier, our Chief Talent Officer, and I hosted a welcome lunch to open the program in Boston, where this year’s class will spend their first week in orientation before heading to offices across the firm. Among this year’s 21 summer associates are Caroline Taylor and Ali Yamakaitis, longtime members of our professional staff who are pursuing law degrees while continuing to work with NP. Their paths reflect the homegrown talent we take pride in developing. Investing in the next generation is how we build a durable firm. Blake Stockman shared thisI'm wrapping up my summer working for Judge Joel Chupack in the Chancery division here in Cook County. What an amazing experience! I'm proud of the work that my fellow externs Labeeb, Samantha, and I produced to help further the work serving the people of this great city. Having the opportunity to do something like this with my career is a dream that I've carried since I was a teenager. Thank you to our great clerks Mariah and Matthew for all their support this summer and for their encouragement as we learned how the law really works in practice. This will be an experience I'll carry with me for the rest of my career. Onwards.

Blake Stockman posted thisI'm excited to announce that I'll be taking on a summer role as a Judicial Extern for the Honorable Joel Chupack in the Chancery Division of Cook County. I'm looking forward to the opportunity to see our legal system in action, learn from how lawyers advocate for clients across a broad variety of matters, and help serve the community that has taken me in here in Chicago and Cook County. This is an opportunity to hone my legal writing skills, cultivate practical advocacy skills, and deepen my understanding of the legal principles that I've been studying through my first year at Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology. After a great summer at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, I will be returning to the firm's Chicago office next fall as an associate in the IP Disputes practice group. Additionally, I recently passed the patent bar exam and am now a registered patent agent with the USPTO. This semester, I will also be serving as a judicial extern with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, where I will continue to develop my litigation skills. I'm grateful for these opportunities and thankful for all the support I have received throughout law school. I'm looking forward to what's next.

Excited to share what's next: this fall, I'll be heading to Paris-Pantheon-Assas University for my 3L year, earning an LLM in European Law alongside my JD from Chicago-Kent College of Law, Illinois Institute of Technology. After returning and taking the bar, I'll be rejoining MBHB (McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff LLP) as an associate. I spent two summers there as a summer associate, and both were incredible — grateful for the mentorship and experience, and genuinely excited to be back for the long run.

This semester I will be an extern with Animal Legal Defense Fund in the Legislative Affairs department. I am excited to spend the semester working for an organization and cause I care deeply about. Featured News & Insight: Illinois Appellate Court Limits BIPA Exposure for Staffing Agencies An Illinois appeals court has ruled that staffing agencies cannot be held liable under the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) when they do not control or possess employees’ biometric data. In a case involving fingerprint time clocks at a food manufacturer, the Illinois Third District Appellate Court held that the staffing agencies were not responsible because the employer, not the staffing agencies, controlled the system and stored the data. The court rejected the argument that simply helping enroll workers or showing them how to use the clocks makes an agency liable. Without access to or control over the data, there is no BIPA violation. Why This Matters BIPA lawsuits can carry $1,000–$5,000 in damages per violation, leading to large class action exposure. This ruling helps limit risk for staffing agencies and other companies that do not control biometric systems. Practical Implications for Employers & Staffing Agencies • Clearly define data control and ownership in contracts. • Document which entity controls biometric systems and stored data. • Limit administrative access where possible. • Maintain compliant notice and consent procedures if you control biometric data. This is for my attorney network. If your long-term goal is in-house, your current role matters more than you realize. One of the biggest trends I’m seeing in the Chicago legal market right now is the steady movement of attorneys from large law firms into in-house roles. Companies are being selective, but they’re actively hiring lawyers who bring strong training, commercial experience, and the ability to partner with the business side. And...they want on point experience. If you’re even thinking about making the transition in the next 12–18 months, now is the time to start building relationships and understanding what skills and experiences will make you competitive. #inhouse #markettrends #legalrecruiting
