How to Use Mods

From visual upgrades to quality-of-life changes, mods are a huge part of the Witcher 3 experience. Adding mods to your game can be the extra element to bring your immersion to the next level, and this page contains all the information on how to use them.

While mods have long been exclusive to PC, console players on next-gen can now access some mods with the Witcher 3 Next-Gen Update. Unfortunately, the ability to add other mods remains a PC-only feature.

Need to know what mods you should use? Check out our video below on the 21 Great Witcher 3 Mods for Returning Players.

How to Use Mods in Witcher 3

While you can install mods manually, the easiest and recommended method to start using mods in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is with Vortex from Nexus Mods. Vortex is the mods manager from Nexus Mods, a mod library with thousands of user-created mods you can freely use.

Most of the mods you'll need for Witcher 3 can be found in Nexus Mods, and using them becomes as simple as clicking a few buttons with Vortex. Create a free account (if you don't already have one) and download the latest Vortex version here—you can either do a one-click installer or a custom one.

Once you've successfully installed Vortex, go back to Nexus Mods and browse for the mods you'd like. To download a mod, click on the Files tab on the individual mod page, scroll down to where it says Main Files, and click on Mod Manager download.

  • Vortex will automatically sort your downloaded mods within your Witcher 3 game folder; there is no need to unzip files and manually put them in the appropriate folders.

If you have issues with your mods, be sure to check out Vortex's built-in notification system in the top right corner. The software will notify you of updates, restrictions, and other changes that need your confirmation. This method usually fixes the most common issues.

  • If that doesn't work, try launching the game from the Quick Access section on the dashboard.
  • Click on the Mods tab on the left to see your existing mods. You can activate, disable, and remove any mods you'd like here.
