In the book, those crumbling Mickey and Goofy statues—the "animal-headed gods of Lost America"—are a sharp, melancholy symbol: relics of a forgotten consumer culture, worshipped as deities. The movie swapping them for Minions is painfully cynical—it strips away the cultural weight. Mickey and Goofy are 20th-century American icons, so their decayed statues feel like genuine artifacts; Minions are a 21st-century franchise, without that "ancient god" aura. The likely reason is rights: Disney characters are expensive, Minions belong to Universal. That's why it stings—it turns a haunting moment into a cheap gag and betrays the book's soul.
