Guys, it's time to drop Google.

Google isn't the only search engine in the whole internet, there are others! And we need to diversify our search engine usage or we're gonna end up where we were a decade and change ago with the Internet Explorer issue. We can't let a single brand monopolize everything! This is why Google Search can afford to suck so hard: because people use it regardless! And there are alternatives.

A little bit about search engines, there are 3 types: crawlers, which work by scraping the web and developing their own indexes; metas, which get their results from the crawler-type search engines and therefore depend entirely upon them; and mixed, those which have their own (small) index but also pull results from the crawlers.

Right now, there are a couple of independant crawlers apart from Google, Bing (from Mycrosoft) and Yandex (the Russian one): this are Mojeek and Wiby.

Supporting independant crawlers is the easiest way to fight the shittyfication of the internet.

Mojeek.com is an independant british search engine with its own growing index commited to fighting internet censorship. It's small, and therefore it's usability isn't as good as that of the Big Three, but it doesn't censor, it's fairly respectful of people's privacy, and it doesn't drown you in adds. For those old enough to remember, it's a lot like early 2000s Google: you can find what you need, but if you write "dig shelter" instead of "dog shelter", that's what it's gonna search for. That said, please try to use it and support it as much as you can before we end up entirely dependant on Google, Bing and big corps adds. [click here to go to Mojeek]

Wiby.me is a new indie project that is literally dedicated to bringing back the old-school web. It's goal is to index as many personalized websites as possible, and NOT commercial sites. So, for those of you who can't find any answers to technical questions beyond highschool level because Google buries them under a gazillion commercial sites and other meaningless shit, keep an eye on this project! It has a lot of potential. And, if you know of any personal websites that have great stuff but have been murdered by Google, you can go over to Wiby and submit it to their index. [click here to go to Wiby]

Aside from those, there are also meta search engines you can use to ween yourself off Google and search for random, day to day stuff.

Qwant.com is my go-to here—it has its own index and pulls from Bing, has relatively little censorship, and is fairly private. This is the one I use on my phone for everyday stuff. [click here to go to Qwant].

Historically, DuckDuckGo has always been a go-to for those who want a search engine that respects your privacy and doesn't censor. Personally, I've never been a fan, and there have been a LOT of scandals in recent years. It supposedly has its own index and pulls from Bing, much like Qwant, but I don't know. I just don't like it. Still, I've added it here for completeness' sake.

If you have Firefox Mobile browser, you can set any of these search engines as your default search engine and you can also add the others as secondary search engines and switch quicky from the navigation bar. If you don't have firefox mobile though, what are you doing with your life??? Go get it!! It is So. Much. Better. You can have add blockers and watch YouTube add free, for free! You can have reader mode and dark mode add-ons! You can have the world oh my goshhhh, drop Chrome!!

4get.ca is my last recommendation: it works a lot like SearX, but honestly better. It doesn't have its own index, but pulls from many others. I think it's the best for reaserch, since it allows you to search for answers from different indexes, is easy to configure, add free, and avoids censorship as much as it can. It's also very privacy conscious, so that's an other plus, and it has that late 90s / early 2000s vibe that I totally dig. [click here to go to 4get]

If you wanna learn more about the topic, you can over to the Search Engine Map [click here] which shows you a bunch of Search Engines and how they relate to each other. Or you can also go over to this one dude's personal website whose done A Lot of reaserch into the topic (way more than me) and seems to be pretty legit, if a little extra. [click here to go to digdeeper.neocities.org] Hope this infodump is useful to someone =D

I don't watch Wrestling nor Japanese Wrestling but sometimes I come across photos and they do very specific things to my brain I can't identify

I agree with this. I don’t see myself ever really getting into Japanese pro wrestling, but the magical girl-influenced characters do intrigue me.

Both images above feature the wrestler, Mizuki, and these aren’t even the only dynamic photos of her!

And then there’s her signature move: Whirling Candy 🍭 🍬

Every image of her looks like a painting

I was so curious about the physicality of that last gif, when I finally noticed: the other wrestler is the one to give her that big spin! Watch their hands closely. That's some good ass choreography.

Look at these action poses— she’s an irl anime character!

i mean this in the gentlest way possible: you need to eat vegetables. you need to become comfortable with doing so. i do not care if you are a picky eater because of autism (hi, i used to be this person!), you need to find at least some vegetables you can eat. find a different way to prepare them. chances are you would like a vegetable you hate if you prepared it in a stew or roasted it with seasoning or included it as an ingredient in a recipe. just. please start eating better. potatoes and corn are not sufficient vegetables for a healthy diet.

Need it to be easier?

  • baby carrots (good dipped in ranch)
  • Celery sticks (add some peanut butter or cream cheese for extra flavor and protein)
  • Broccoli (good with ranch, cheese, or salt/pepper/butter)
  • Canned peas (you can microwave in a microwave-safe bowl. Good with salt/pepper/butter)
  • Bell peppers (cut into strips, good with cream cheese)
  • Canned green beans (can be microwaved in microwave-safe bowl. Good with salt/pepper/butter)
  • Hummus (good with crackers or tortilla chips)
  • Salsa (good with tortilla chips)
  • Guacamole (good with tortilla chips)

Need it in something?

Can't see it:

  • Hummus
  • salsa
  • Guacamole

Can see but disguised flavor (can usually be found store bought or done at home and use different veggies):

Texture problems:

Need it soft:

  • Hummus
  • Salsa
  • Guacamole
  • Cooked carrots
  • Avocados
  • Beans (personally I prefer black beans and canned baked beans)
  • Peas (make sure to cook well, great value brand has the softest peas I've tried)
  • Cooked broccoli (note: it does smell bad while cooking)
  • Cooked asparagus (note: also smells bad while cooking)
  • Cooked zucchini and squash (good together but can be eaten separate)
  • You can also puree most vegetables and eat with a spoon or use them as a dip

Needs to be crunchy:

  • Raw carrots
  • Raw celery
  • Raw bell peppers
  • Salad (remember you can put whatever you want in it! Even if that means no lettuce)
  • Most veggies are okay raw, and are usually very crunchy

Veggies google says stay crunchy after lightly cooking:

  • Snap peas
  • Brussel sprouts
  • Cabbage
  • Water chestnut
  • Bamboo shoots

Broad texture tips:

  • You can change textures by eating raw, cooking, chopping, pureeing, etc
  • You can separate different textures to use in different ways (ie using broccoli tops in a soup and eating the bottoms raw)

It also really helps to think about why you dislike a vegetable. I found that I am scared of green foods so I like to use those veggies for ingredients in things they are well hidden for. I've also learned that watching something while eating helps because then I'm not looking at the gross green things. When possible, I also like to get help hiding it (ie using cream of celery soup in my chicken and dumplings).

lierdumoa

Remember that vegetables are important because they contain nutrients that other foods don’t contain. NOT because they are low calorie.

Eating vegetables slathered in pork fat is always better than not eating vegetables. In fact fat will help you absorb the nutrients. Get those nutrients in your body by any means necessary.

teakayblog

take the veggies you know you like/can tolerate, coat them with a little oil and salt, throw them in the oven for 15-20 mins. (potatoes actually need like an hour or more tho). air friers about 10 mins (20 for potates) just make sure you shake the tray every so often

williamjbowles

I’m really particular about veggies (namely when it comes to textures), so here’s what works for me:

- Don’t like the big chunks of tomato and onions in salsa? Blend it! Turn a bunch of veggie chunks in tomato water into a thick, rich sauce! 10x improvement in every way. (If you have texture issues with veggies, a good blender solves so many issues.)

- I think that raw bell peppers and onions have an unpleasant ‘toughness’ to them. But put them on a sandwich with a thick bun like a burger or a sub, and the denseness of the bread masks them very well.

- Sometimes our quirks don’t make sense. I love raw carrots, but only tolerate cooked ones… yet I love broccoli cooked, but not raw. Sometimes, if you don’t like something one way, you might just need to try it prepared differently.

- If you have kids or may have kids in the future and worry about them getting their veggies, take advantage of their imagination and make it fun (that’s what worked for me). I like steamed broccoli because my mother got me to pretend I was a giant eating whole trees. Celery with peanut butter and raisins became ants on a log. Things like that. Depends on the kid, though. Sometimes what foods you like or don’t like is just about having fond memories of it.

i’ve started babysitting for a VERY christian family which is great because they pay me a lot of money but as someone who was raised almost completely agnostic it’s kind of insane. the 2 year old keeps asking me to read her stories from the bible. (why are we reading david and goliath to a 2 year old????) the 5 year old told me today that he was going to bring his legos to heaven with him. he also has repeatedly told me that the lego spaceships he builds are stronger than jesus. (not sure what to say to that. do i deny it??? are things allowed to be stronger than jesus??) had to stop myself mid sentence today because i almost told them im not going to heaven which would DEFINITELY have caused several meltdowns. they’re also both completely fascinated by my nose ring

important addition in the tags I think!

queenwendy

Very important addition in the tags.

Also, as a lego nerd and an agnostic who’s done a pinch of research I’m pretty sure a lego spaceship stronger than jesus is heresy, but I’ll ask an expert @heresylog

heresylog

It’s heresy but the child can have a little heresy. As a treat.

williamjbowles

(Research montage of doing the red string conspiracy board trope, hacking the databases, and going to that old library Gandalf went to)
I’m pretty sure super strength, forcefields, and futuristic armaments are not on Jesus’s list of abilities and miracles, so I think it’s safe to say that your space ship (assuming the lego model is just a representation of a functioning vessel) actually is physically stronger than Jesus. Nor does that contradict Biblical canon, so it’s not heretical, either.

Anonymous asked:

Do u have any advice for artists who draw ridiculously slow???

marsoid answered:

draw faster

marsoid

jk haha. here's some tips:

1. identify what's making you draw so slow. can't figure out pose/anatomy? too perfectionist about inking? getting caught up in details? indecisive coloring?

2. timed gesture studies. draw a loose figure w photo reference in 10 minutes. do that a bunch of times. then 5 minutes, 3 minutes, 1 minute. train yourself to omit as much detail as possible while keeping the figure recognizable.

3. the dot/line exercise, sometimes called the "target practice" warmup. draw two dots, then a line connecting them. keep moving the dots farther apart while drawing the line as fast as you can while keeping it STRAIGHT (not wobbly!) and hitting the second dot. the line is ONE stroke. it's harder than it sounds. this should help you get an idea of how fast you can make a controlled stroke

4. look up tutorials on coloring more quickly in whatever art program you're using if you do digital art. chances are there's a tool or setting that can make it easier to fill in shapes. i almost never color by hand, i fill bucket everything

5. free yourself of "clean line art"... 9 times outta 10 people think sketchy lines are more visually appealing anyway. it's faster and they have more life. in my opinion at least

6. use lots of references. spending hours on a complicated pose from memory instead of just looking at photo/3D model reference isn't impressive it's just stupid and unnecessary

7. study with intent. if you struggle with leg anatomy for example, do lots of studies from photos (eyeballing and tracing), then try it freehand/from memory, rinse and repeat 9000 times until it's not something you get stuck on when it comes time to do an illustration/comic page

8. less detail. simplify. you can have ultra detailed art or you can draw fast. pick which is more important to you

9. bullshit it... draw ugly and bad but do it fast. done is always better than perfect

10. thumbnail. it's not just for comics. do a teeny tiny sketch of your drawing beforehand with colors. then use it as reference. helps to finish the actual piece faster when it's planned out

bonus: be impatient and easily bored. i rarely spend more than 2-3 hrs on any one drawing, including comic pages. i got other shit to do!!!! like nap

williamjbowles

I draw ridiculously slow. This is for me, personally.
Saving this for future reference as I try to be not ridiculously slow.
