The Wizard of Oz 4K Blu-ray (UPDATED)

Posted August 23, 2019 03:05 AM by

Warner Home Video LogoWarner Bros. Home Entertainment will release on 4K Blu-ray Victor Fleming's classic film The Wizard of Oz (1939), starring Judy Garland, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Bert Lahr, and Jack Haley. The release will be available for purchase on October 29.

Studio description: Adapted from L. Frank Baum's timeless children's tale about a Kansas girl's journey over the rainbow, The Wizard of Oz officially premiered at Grauman's Chinese Theater on August 15, 1939. The film was directed by Victor Fleming (who that same year directed Gone With the Wind), produced by Mervyn LeRoy, and scored by Herbert Stothart, with music and lyrics by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg. Ray Bolger appeared as the Scarecrow; Bert Lahr as the Cowardly Lion, Jack Haley as the Tin Woodman. Frank Morgan was seen in six different roles, including that of the "wonderful Wizard" himself. Dorothy was portrayed by a 4'11" sixteen year old girl who quickly earned her reputation as "the world's greatest entertainer"-- the incomparable Judy Garland.

The Wizard of Oz received five Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and captured two Oscars -- Best Song ("Over the Rainbow") and Best Original Score -- plus a special award for Outstanding Juvenile Performance by Judy Garland. The film was an overwhelmingly popular and critical success upon its initial release and repeated its ability to captivate audiences when MGM reissued the film in 1949 and 1955.

Released to wide acclaim and recognition, and with a long-lasting legacy in the film world, The Wizard of Oz owns a place in multiple AFI lists, including: 100 Years 100 Movies (#6); 100 Years 100 Thrills (#43); 100 Years 100 Heroes and Villains (#4); 100 Years 100 Songs (#1); 100 Years 100 Movie Quotes (#4); and Greatest Movie Musicals (#3).

In 1989 The Wizard of Oz was part of the inaugural group of films selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant.

Using state of the art technology, a new 8K 16bit scan of the original Technicolor camera negative became the basis for the 4K UHD scan. The process was overseen by MPI colorist Janet Wilson, who has overseen every remaster of The Wizard of Oz for the past 20 years.

The 4K Blu-ray disc of The Wizard of Oz will feature DOLBY VISION HDR that dramatically expands the color palette and contrast range and uses dynamic metadata to automatically optimize the picture for every screen frame by frame.

Glinda floating in the background! lol. How many times have I bought this? 5 or 6 at least...and I still have no problem buying it again...love this movie, Been watching since I was 5 or 6 when it would come on once a year on TV. And we did not have a color set in 1960, still loved it

The color should be fantastic in HDR.
IIRC, they scanned and repaired the negatives for the 3D release, so I'm assuming they're going back to that work and not a color print.

What counts is how the film looks. I used to watch TWoO every year in the 70s and early 80s on a small b&w; TV set that had a broken dial (used pliers to change the channel) and rabbit ears. For 10 years I had no idea the film turned to COLOR once Dorothy crossed over the rainbow. I'm only 45 yo but I sound like I'm 85. Complaining constantly over art is pretty superficial stuff.

@NightFeverMusic - I had the same experience on my family's old B&W; TV in the 80s! We didn't get a color set until 1988 or so. (Amusingly, even though I knew it was modern / in color, I'd only ever seen TRON in black & white multiple times and didn't watch the color version until the blu-ray came out - it was like seeing a brand new shot for shot remake)

While I'm looking forward to 4K releases of 1959 "Ben Hur" and of course the 1960s "Lawrence of Arabia," "Dr. Zhivago" and the like, I remain apprehensive about 4K upgrades of films as old as 1939's "Wizard" and "GWTW." The fine blu-ray releases (and the great 3-D Wizard) look terrific but sets created for lower "resolution" projection now look a bit more artificial than they were intended and I'm afraid 4K will turn them into cardboard. Sort of like "work lights" on a stage in the theatre.
Don't get me wrong. This is not criticism. It's simply a hopefully-erased fear when the inevitable releases of these classics happen.
I'm far more interested in seeing 4K upgrades of some of the black-and-white classics of the forties and fifties eras. I believe those will work better.. Like "Mildred Pierce" and "Night of the Hunter."

Great news and I am also hoping more are in the pipeline. In addition to GWTW and Ben-Hur Id like to see Citizen Kane. Casablanca, Yankee Doodle Dandy, Searchers, Mister Roberts (not even on Blu) and from other studios Spartacus, Ten Commandments, Sound of Music. List goes on and on.

Just saw a 35mm print which I'm sure this release won't even come close to looking as good. Hell, if it's 4K, we know the blu-ray will have better video quality. HDR is gonna fuck up the Technicolor so bad.

Ive never seen cover art I hated more than this. I will most definitely be purchasing the Best Buy steelbook. I am so excited to see The Wizard of Oz in 4K/HDR. Im probably alone in this, but I like overkill and would like to see what they could do with a Dolby Atmos track and throw in the original uncompressed mono for good measure.

It is nice to see a classic 1939 movie get a 8K master scan of the original negatives and placed on a native 3840 x 2160P 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs. However this release appears to be only standard HDR10 according to the specs. No HDR10+ or Dolby Vision HDR. It would be nice to have a collectors box set. However people that own the Wizard Of Oz Blu-ray 3D boxset will most likely keep that boxset and place the 4K Blu-ray release next to that boxset.

Perhaps the 1939 Gone With the Wind might receive the same treatment.

Also I would be interested in the 1925 and 1959 Ben Hur on a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc.

This is one of those movies where I am not so sure I want to see it 4K. There comes a point where older shot on a stage films lose their magic because you can painfully tell everything is fake. I may stick with my blu unless there are some just out of this world extras. The digital version does make it tempting.

As a fan of the Oz books, I remember being so disappointed by this film as a kid because they left so much out. But it's a cinema classic. Still, Disney's 'Return to Oz' from 1985 will always be the definitive Oz movie for me. The cover art aren't great. Studios really need to do the original theatrical art for these 4K discs. But their marketing teams always think they know better.

The cover of that 4K release is the very least of my concerns, I'm just thrilled that they're releasing it in 4K. This film is the very first film I saw with my mother at a theater in East 23rd St in NY, where they played nothing but the classics, back in 1975. Believe it or not, it was the very first time I had seen the film and it introduced me to a whole new world of vintage musicals and classics. But what was most special about it, is that I got to see it and share it with my Mom. The Wizard of Oz is one of my absolute favorite films ever, I believe I have it in every format available, so I am hoping that it will receive the very best picture and sound, looking forward to it...

Its not the most important thing, but i dont like the cover either. I wish they would have just kept it simple, not trying to always invent new shit. I adored GWTW blu ray cover, from the original poster art. When GWTW gets a 4k release, i hope they keep the same cover. WB should take some classes from WAC on cover art. Anyway, im thrilled its finally announced!

Brand new 8K scan? Nice one Warners! The previous 4K remaster was also done from 8K scans of the three-strip negatives but I guess they felt they wanted to freshen it up a bit for actual 4K consumer viewing. I should think that they'll erase the wires holding up the lion's tail again.

My take on those concerned about double dipping, if you have the equipment for 4k, buy the title, review it and make the call if it's worth the upgrade. If not, resell it for most if not all your money back. You can always sell your old copy too if the upgrade is good enough!

Since this is 8k mastered, downscaled to 4k offering Dolby Vision, this should be a stunning upgrade over the Blu-ray. BUT we shall see. 😎🤘

Why do people get so bent out of shape over the cover of any Blu Ray release!? As long as the picture quality is decent-great, who the hell cares? Everyone's responses and reactions are valid. But let's focus on the film itself first and then maybe comment on it's cover.

Creativity and not recycling artwork is refreshing. All key elements are in this cover: twister, Emerald City, Dorothy and her Friends, the Good and the Bad witch, What might puzzle some is the scale used to compose these elements, ... the twister should have touched ground on the YBR farther behind the characters to look more realistic and Glinda deserves more space

@echopper: Doesn't bode well at all. At the current rate of release it will be years before all those titles you and others want will be available. This release is the studio's prestige release of the year. The one they do each year to keep up the fiction they still care about art and about more than the money. A few years ago we had superb 4K releases of Braveheart and Gladiator at almost the same time and everybody thought that the floodgates for 4K classics were about to open. Didn't happen because there's no mass market for old movies on disc any longer and frankly not much of a market for anything but the empty and noisy CGI fests that are about the only type of movie being made these days.

@reidw: You said essentially the exact same crap in the announcement for "It's A Wonderful Life" on 4K, that it was this year's "prestige" release blah blah blah. Anytime a classic movie gets announced on disc, you appear like a prophet of doom to tell us it's the "last gasp" for classics on disc. You are a stick in the mud draped with a wet blanket; all you ever bring to the discussion is pessimism.

@vilya: Tell me. Do you really think it has started a trend? To me if it has, its a very weak one. 4K Discs have been around long enough to be the norm but standard definition DVDs are still being sold. Anyone watching the business can see that there is never going to be the flood of 4K discs that has happened in the past for DVDs, and to a lesser extent for BD and yet many of the commenters here still seem to think we're just one big magic release away from that happening. You call it pessimism, I call it realism but I do respect your viewpoint.

The Wizard of Oz was scanned in 8K in 2009. Every BD release uses that restoration, including this release. This release just utilizes DV HDR and 4K resolution offered by the UHD format. No new scan has been made.

@reidw: If I, or you, could predict the market for anything, we ought to have made a fortune from having such a remarkable talent. I haven't and I very much doubt that you have, either.

The 4K disc format is just three years old; why would you expect them to "be the norm?" Blu-rays weren't the "norm" in 2009 when they were the same age as 4k discs are now. They do not even need to be the "norm"; they only need to be profitable enough to justify their continued existence.

Despite the overall declining sales numbers, we are getting more releases on disc by format each year, not less. In the link provided below you can see the number of titles released each year within each format: see page 13 for DVD, page 31 for blu-ray and page 39 for 4K UHD. 2019 numbers are only through June 28th, but year over year each format sees more titles released, not less. I see that as evidence that physical media remains enough of a profitable endeavor that the studios deem discs to be worth releasing in increasing numbers.

You can call your pessimism "realism" all you like, but that does nothing to prove it to be "real" and it certainly does nothing to make it welcome here or anywhere else. All you do is come into these release announcements that most of us see as good news with the sole purpose of raining on our parade. You are a killjoy who only wishes to dampen our enthusiasm.

Your doom and gloom is of no benefit to anyone, whether it proves to be true or not. Most of us love movies and we are happy to see our favorites receive a release on this newest of formats. You would have us mourn the format, and physical media in general, while it remains full of life. If your grim outlook comes to pass there will be time enough to mourn then.

Today most of us are celebrating the news that "The Wizard Of Oz" is getting released on 4K. Why can't you let us do so in peace? You remind me of the type that ruins New Year's Eve parties by warning everyone that next year will be worse than the current year; people like you try to take the joy out of everything.

@jeffrey.macesin, @Plurbus Bilp, @Daytripper

I think some people behind keyboards and smartphones need to revaluate their thoughts about this website being about Blu-rays regarding content and packaging.

An online forum or message board is place where people can bring something to the table. It doesn't matter if someone brings the potato salad the drinks or even the main entre, as long as it's on topic in my opinion.

We don't need people saying things like this, "Everyone's responses and reactions are valid. But let's focus on the film itself first and then maybe comment on it's cover", or "Youre all a bunch on whiny little bitches, didnt your mama say never judge a book by its cover", or "Forget about the cover art. Let's focus on what's really important."

Personally, I don't care for someone dictating what I can say , or how I say, or when I say it. If you don't like it, then fine, say whatever you want...but don't think you can be a regulator or dictator and not have someone say something about it.

Great news!! Here's hoping for a GWTW announcement soon. As for the cover, Oz has only ever had maybe one decent cover in the 30 some odd years it's been on home video. And I don't much think it ever had a really iconic or remarkable theatrical poster.

Ah, people complaining about a cover that the movie is in. Let me guess: you people set the cover art of a movie above the quality of a movie. I dont know about you, but I look at the case for maybe 5 seconds taking the movie out and then the case sits in my shelf sideways where I never see the cover. Maybe you guys buy movies to put in picture frames?

Titles like this are why I always wait for the Blu-ray.com review before I buy. They do a great job of identifying the releases that truly shine vs the ones that are only a "subtle" improvement over the previous releases. That's especially important when I already own a title, sometimes with a classic like Oz, already in multiple versions. When a studio invests treasure, time and talent in really enhancing the experience I'll gladly upgrade for significantly better picture, audio, or wonderful special features - but not every new release is a labor of love. These reviews help me reward studios for making upgrades that matter, and to deny them my support when they shovel a 2k edited film through an upscaler, with "subtle" improvements from HDR, add marginal new extras, and ask me to pay double the Blu-ray price. Money talks, and my money is screaming that I vote exclusively for quality, especially when upgrading a title already collected. Thank you Blu-ray.com for helping me know when to race to the checkout page, and when to spend my precious treasure, time, and shelf space elsewhere.

For me, the 3d disc is definitive. To go back to flat in any format would be a let down. I'd just be noticing what was missing. But happy for those who prefer flat imagery. The 3D was better than the BD in color & detail so hopefully the new 2D release should be as well.
