Ted Hsu (pronounced “shoe”), a scientist with 25 published research papers, was most recently Executive Director of SWITCH, a Kingston-based not-for-profit association that promotes job creation and investment in the area of sustainable energy. For three years he chose to be a stay-at-home father, following a rewarding career as a researcher and trader in Paris and Philadelphia for Banque Nationale de Paris, and as an Executive Director in the Tokyo office of Morgan Stanley.
Ted grew up in Kingston and chose to return here to live. His extended family has been in Kingston since 1964. He appreciates the need to nurture the local economy in areas including sustainable energy, to achieve progress by bringing the private sector together with municipal and provincial government partners to create jobs for the future.
Ted is a unique candidate because of his scientific and creative problem-solving background, experience in international business and management, and his fluency in French and Chinese.
Ted served as treasurer of the Kingston and the Islands Federal Liberal Association for four years, and was an active member of its Policy Committee. He worked actively in the 2007 and 2008 provincial and federal Liberal campaigns.
Ted graduated from Queen’s University in 1984 (B.Sc. Hons. Physics). He obtained his Ph.D. in Physics from Princeton University in 1989.
He and his wife, Tara Sharkey, are the proud parents of Ella-Valentine and Vera-Claire.
