The Leas Lift, Folkestone, Kent
The Folkestone Leas Lift Community Interest Company
125 years after it first opened, the operation of the Folkestone lift has been taken over by The Folkestone Leas Lift Community Interest Company, which has been specifically formed to preserve both the service that it offers and its unique place in the heritage of the town.
The company will operate the lift on behalf of the community as a non-profit-making organisation. It will also open the lift as a living museum to provide educational facilities for school children, students or anyone else having an interest in Victorian engineering.
The lift is a remarkable piece of engineering that has carried more than 50 million people since it opened, in a process that is extremely energy effect, emits no pollution, recycles 100% of the water it uses to drive the cars and has a very small carbon footprint.
The company is only the fourth organisation to manage the lift in a history that spans two world wars and a recent decline in the town's fortunes.
