Yes, it’s time for our first “Shadow Watch”! (And yes, I’m sticking with that name.) Everybody note the different time!

The Dallas Theater Center production of Les Misérables is a super cool alternative take on the musical with a modernized setting! Perfect for illustrating how relevant Les Mis still is today… usually in heartbreaking ways. Also the cast is AMAZING.

WARNINGS: this show is generally brutal and explicit and the modernized setting makes it hit home hard. Be careful if you’re triggered by sexual abuse, child abuse, police brutality, prisons, gun violence… basically this has everything that’s in the original but more intense ( @pilferingapples wrote a good detailed warning post so I’m linking that here) You can minimize the video during the most upsetting scenes, though.

The essential stuff:

  • The musical is about three hours plus intermission. And yes there will be an intermission!

Looking for translation help again! (for Les Mis ‘72)

We’ve been working on subtitles for the French 1972 Les Mis miniseries for a while now and we’re about halfway there? But this has been incredibly slow and some help would be more than welcome.

We already have French transcripts! But we still need to finish translating them. We’re done with the first part (out of two) but the second one is still unfinished.

What we need is volunteers who know at least some French (if your French isn’t great you can compensate by having a decent knowledge of the Brick, particularly the later parts, like the barricade section - the miniseries takes a lot of passages from the novel almost word-for-word). Even if you have trouble with spoken French you can still help since we do have a transcript.

No obligations: even if you only have time/energy to translate one scene you’d already be helping!

(And yes, once the subs are finished we’ll definitely watch it on Les Mis group watch!)

I felt like finally reading Charles Hugo’s Les Misérables, the 1863 stage play!

I thought it might be fun to liveblog it but since I’m pretty bad at liveblogging I kinda ended up cheating. I already read the entire thing and I just saved all the reaction posts as drafts. :p Look I had to make sure I’d actually be able to stick with it! Anyway, here we go with the not-so-live liveblogging. (This might still take me a while because I need to translate some quotes and check that my posts are readable, etc.)

Les Mis group watch updates for week 11 (2017)

It’s funny because this week both groups will be watching an old black and white movie adaptation, except one is horrible and the other is great.

I highly recommend both of these but for completely opposite reasons. The 1952 one is entertainingly bad, the 1934 is one of the actual best Les Mis adaptations ever.

Les Mis Group Watch Parody Party!

This Saturday we’re just watching a whole bunch of Les Mis parodies. I’ve got a 50min playlist full of them and you all can bring more if you know of some fun ones. Or if we run out of parodies we can just watch any kind of Les Mis crack videos or whatever. The only qualifications are that it has to be silly and about Les Mis.

(Okay one rule though: let’s not bother with all the hundreds of thousands of videos on YouTube where someone has rewritten Les Mis songs to be about airlines or gluten free food or Wolverine from X-Men. Nothing against those videos in principle but there are   s o   m a n y   o f   t h e m   and they don’t actually have much to do with Les Mis.)

  • I can’t give you an exact duration here, we’ll just watch until we either get bored or run out of good stuff? You can leave early if you want obviously

So… for the sake of variety we decided to go for something a bit different this time. And by different I mean bad. I need to be honest with you: this is going to be a hate-watch. If you happen to actually like this movie, this might not be for you… x)

I mean… this isn’t the worst Les Mis adaptation there is (there are such horrors out there that you cannot even imagine) but it’s pretty bad. Basically the problem is that this was made in the heyday of the ultra moralistic Hays Code in Hollywood. And also the Red Scare thing.

Basically this is Les Mis made by people who thought the book was too edgy and radical for American audiences.
