See ResultsThe Lamia! Unknown if they were made this way via curse or blessing, these half-animal creatures plot the downfall of religions and often form cults. This is made easier by the curse they can bestow with a touch, weaking your mind, will, and senses. Also leads to recklessness and a lack of understanding of your action! If that’s not your cup of tea they’re still strong as a polar bear with magic to charm, shapeshift into humanoids, create illusions, and do ventriloquism.
D&D’s was part lion due to being based on Edward Topsell’s Fantastic Four-Footed Beasts, and the original Pathfinder version was sticking to what people knew. But with the rework, Pathfinder 2E tried veering more mythological with a lot of thier new versions. Hence the half-snake.
Time to kick off the VS section of Smash or Pass VS! Yeah I changed my mind, we’re starting immediately but just keeping it at 1 a day for a bit cause I’m busy.
The bone devil is 9 ft (2.7 m) tall and probably has enough handholds between the spikes to avoid being stabbed! The stinger is poisonous, and they can see in the dark. They’re driven by hate, lust, and envy, so unsurprisingly they’re the law enforcement of hell. But they actually fanatically follow the law, and are at least open about it when they’re blatantly evil.
To the right is the Magma Mephit. 4 feet (1.2 m) tall and a bit slow at comprehending what’s being said or done around them, but they can even summon friends! Just bring some sort of fire protection, as prolonged touch can start to damage organic materials. Still, nice if you’re into temperature play!
Qualifiers: Sea Hag
Smash First Design
Smash Second Design (with the tentacles)
Smash both
Pass
See ResultsThe sea hag is…Ursula. They love tempting people into tragic bargins, with this new version specializing in trading your most valued aspects for bodily transformation. They also like drowning and eating sailors that get close to thier lair. Thier gaze can frighten and slow you, they’re as strong as a horse, and they have glowing lights under thier skin!
Let the war between scales and fur continue. Smash or Pass, which is better?
Yuan-ti Abomination
Weretiger
See ResultsOn the left, the Yuan-ti Abomination! 10 ft (3 m) long snake person, so many of these! They can constrict, cause fear, and have mild mind manipulation! Fun nature fact: Snakes and lizards actually have two hemipenes (cloaca extensions for reproduction), each hooked up to a different teste so they can swap between them while one’s recharging. Given this one’s almost entirely snake, I’d assume it has the same. They also means two clits!
On the right, Weretiger. Can become a tiger, a person, or a larger tiger-person hybrid with a husky voice and tendency to roll thier R’s. They like to keep tidy little cottagecore cabins in the woods, full of herb gardens and cats and poultry and such. They tend stay near people because they like occasional company and have favored mates, but not too close because they value privacy and don’t care to spread thier curse (why make more hunting competition).
ALSO, for clarification: Yes, feline penises are typically “barbed.” In tigers these are dull and less than 0.03 inches (0.7 mm) in even largest recorded specimens. aka the size and thickness of a dull and trimmed fingernail, even made of the same material. With most other cats they’re much larger, but they’re negligible in this species
Known as “mites” last edition, these self-loathing wretches are 3 ft (1 m) tall pitiful cowards. They’ve lost most of their ancestral magic (which they’re self conscious about) and basically have no friends, constantly bullied and bullying other mitflits for a scrap of power. Though they stay in these relationships because it’s better than being alone. They can speak to vermin, feeling kinship with them, and follow orders without fighting. Like that’s not just a lore thing, they have a penalty to their will to resist requests, intimidation, or coercion.
The shield archon! Every Archon embodies a virtue, evolving as they grow stronger. This is Courage, defender of the weak and meek, magically forcing enemies to attack only them or teleporting to swap places and absorb hits. That lance and shield on the old humanoid version can turn back into hands at will, and they have amazing endurance and strength. Look, these ones are fairly straightforward for our purposes, the can fly and teleport but its abilities are mostly just making it hard to kill. The new shield-shaped one does have floating disconnected hands though!
The fungus leshy! 2 ft (61 cm) fungus people made by fey and druids and such to guard important locations! They also like to make little fungus gardens they are very proud of. They can turn into mushrooms and speak with fungi. While the ones on the right were shown in the new book, the one on the left is on the cover. So I think it’s more of a variation thing. Makes sense, they’re spirits that fuse with plants and fungi to make thier bodies, and mushrooms have a lot of variety in potential host!
Qualifiers: Leaf Leshy
Smash the one with the pine cone armor
Smash the little pea lookin one
Smash both
Pass
See ResultsLeaf leshy are little goblin-sized plant fey that’re made by druids and fey to protect things. These are the weakest, and while they enjoy sparring they get really cautious about actual fights. They can glide, turn into trees, and talk to trees! Leshies are also basically nature spirits occupying bodies comprised of plants or fungi used in the ritual that made their body. So these will always look like they’re made from tree bits, but as you can see there’s plenty of room for variety.
Real self important to think I give a shit if you’re following this blog, and I rarely even speak on the company here outside the occasional comment responses. So maybe stop projecting onto strangers. You aren’t the first to leave over liking Pathfinder stuff, and are I think the third who decided to tell me for some weird reason? I only bother responding to this one so that maybe people will be less likely to continue doing so.
Yes, every few years (like the 2021 controversy you’re referring to) they’ll have some shitty behavior come to light. Things like low/industry standard pay (which is legit still too low) or office hygiene. Then they’ll unionize, ot pressure against a founder will have her start training a replacement and set a date to leave, etc. They occasionally do some shitty things as a company, or we’ll find out an employee has been harrassing coworkers. Nobody’s denying that, companies are near always shitty, and you’ll swiftly find that nobody’s more critical of Pazio than many of Pathfinder’s fans. I’ll call them good for a medium sized company, but they’re still a company and still do shitty things. But if you’re going to bring it up, at least they usually address the issue and have less issues over a few years than D&D will have in a few months.
But it’s not shilling to act like damn near any company is better than the one where “sent the goddamn Pinkertons after people for thier own mix ups” was forgotten in weeks due to thier other constant controversies. I don’t do brand loyalty, like I’m just now getting back to this system after years gone, but the only controversy I know around them in the past like 3 years has been an executive decrying JD Vance saying by saying Fascists aren’t welcome here.
Anyway, I’d block but it seems you’ve done so for me. If anyone else wants to leave because I *checks notes* posted art from the book people voted on, please feel free to do so. If you tell me about it my only response will be to help you stay strong in your decision. idc if this blog has 4,000 people or 4, this is just a hobby.
