In a recent update, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted varied weather conditions across Karnataka in the coming days. While Bengaluru and the southern parts of the state are expected to experience heavy pre-monsoon rainfall, northern Karnataka is likely to face intense heatwave conditions. This forecast brings a mix of relief and challenges for the residents.
Bengaluru and southern Karnataka are set to receive 30-40% more pre-monsoon rainfall than usual, which will provide some relief after an unusually hot February. The added rainfall will help moderate daytime temperatures in Bengaluru and surrounding areas. However, the urban heat island effect may still cause some densely populated parts of the city to feel hotter than usual. Coastal regions and the Malnad area will also experience 50-60% more rainfall than average, contributing to the cooling effect in these regions.
Heatwave in northern KarnatakaOn the other hand, northern Karnataka is bracing for a severe heatwave, with temperatures expected to rise as high as 43 to 45 degrees Celsius in March. The IMD has issued a heatwave warning for the northeastern districts, urging residents to take necessary precautions. The state’s health and family welfare department recommends staying well-hydrated, wearing full-sleeved clothing for sun protection, and avoiding outdoor activities during peak afternoon heat to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Daytime temperaturesWhile Bengaluru’s daytime temperatures are expected to stay within normal limits, the city is likely to experience warmer-than-usual nights. According to IMD senior scientist C.S. Patil, nighttime temperatures could rise by 1-2 degrees Celsius, leading to noticeably warmer evenings and early mornings. This shift may affect comfort levels, especially for residents accustomed to cooler nights.
La Nina effectsThese weather shifts are linked to the weakening of La Nina conditions, which typically bring cooler temperatures to the region. As La Nina fades, it’s expected to give way to warmer weather patterns in the state.
With this forecast in mind, residents of Karnataka are advised to prepare for the contrasting weather conditions. Those in the northern parts should follow heat safety guidelines, while those in Bengaluru and the southern regions should brace for warm nights despite the rainfall. Staying informed about weather updates and adjusting daily routines will help ensure safety and comfort during this period of weather change.
Stay alert.
