@i-just-sold-my-soul-sigh. That comes from the books, IIRC. I never see it in fanfic for the TV series that’s been written more recently, but I see it a lot in fanfic that was written back around the time of season one, and many of the writers were also fans of the novels and were having fun tying the series in with book canon, so Hannibal calling him ‘William’ wandered over from there.

I don’t know whether it died out as more of the TV series appeared and it became obvious it was wrong for the TV series, or whether the book fans wandered off and stopped writing as the TV canon became utterly incompatible with the novels, but it stopped happening one way or another.

maybe there’s a missing scene where Will asks Hannibal to call him Will, or even better: Hannibal considers it way too rude to ask for someone’s name when they’ve told him a name which obviously is what they want to be called.

it’s just weird to me, maybe because I’m German, and it’s a bit like using formal you, but with first names in use. you just don’t. you don’t do that.

why would show-nnibal call him a short Form, and in a fic moving towards porn use the longer form!?

At this point, if I saw it in a TV universe fic, it is one of the things that would make me bail. Along with not being able to spell Lecter, I abandon those fics in a hurry too…

And my magnum opus, the Wires series in Once Upon a Time in Mexico fandom is longer than a prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. All 243,452 words of it.

I really must get around to putting all those old stories up on AO3 one day…

Someone who genuinely believes that portraying consensual sexual relationships between fictional teenagers is fuel for paedophiles would be going after Netflix and trying to get Sex Education cancelled, not going after someone who’s written a few fanfics for an anime fandom.

I still get comments on twenty year old fics. Every one of them transports me instantly back to the time when that fandom was my absolute obsession, and I’m flooded all over again with total love for those characters and their relationship.

It’s a massive nostalgia glow-up, and more than anything I love knowing that there are people discovering that fandom who were infants when I wrote that story, and they’re just now finding that canon and falling head over heels for it exactly as I did. It makes my day, every time. There are no limits to that love.
