Clavering was a successful businessman, and owned the Gala-Royale cinema chain. More as a hobby than anything else, he established a photographic studio in the basement of his Pimlico home, with his friend John Charles Parkhurst (1927-2000). Both men had served in the Navy, and they were drawn to the military men around the Hyde Park and Chelsea barracks, whom they paid to model for them.

Look folks. The 80-year-old leather daddies that you see marching in our Pride parade in MPLS with a huge Leather Pride flag watched a ton of their friends die while our government and our society laughed at them. Their Leather families were sometimes their only families. 1/

Queers have been indicating to each other through various means since forever that they are queer whether it's where they're wearing their keys, or what color their bandana is, because they were afraid of getting killed by people If they were more overt, and rightfully so. 4/
Pride is the only time where we get to collectively publicly celebrate our queer elders who died so that we could stand here, and take advantage of the full freedom they fought for, such as it is. Erasing kink and especially Leather from Pride erases parts of our history. 5/
If you don't like it, don't go. If you don't want to have conversations with your kids about our dead elders and why those leather daddies are dressed like that, don't go. There are kid-friendly events all over the place. But corporate Pride is not our history. 6/
A lot of people want to enjoy the benefits that our elders fought and died for, without honoring the history, and frankly it's fucking gross. And it's gross that so many people are so loudly proclaiming their ignorance, and their lack of love for our elders. 7/
If you think Leather and kink don't have a place at Pride, you are not my ally. Just say you want to have a big party with all of the free stuff, and a giant parade, without having to learn anything about our history, and leave.

Meet Hilda, the creation of illustrator Duane Bryers and pin-up art’s best kept secret. Voluptuous in all the right places, a little clumsy but not at all shy about her figure, Hilda was one of the only atypical plus-sized pin-up queens to grace the pages of American calendars from the 1950s up until the early 1980s, and achieved moderate notoriety in the 1960s.
“She’s a creation out of my head. I had various models over the years, but some of my best Hilda paintings I’ve ever done were done without a model,” veteran artist Duane told the online pin-up gallery Les Toil.
Despite being one of history’s longest running calendar queens alongside the likes of Marilyn Monroe, even the most dedicated vintage enthusiasts probably won’t have come across Hilda before.
Of the moment he first discovered the lost Hilda watercolour illustrations, Les recalls:
Quite a few summers back while perusing a local outdoors antique show, I came across a vintage calendar from 1965. As my eyes settled on this fine piece of lost Americana, all else slipped away … A light from the heavens shone directly on Hilda’s sweet, rosy face, fiery red mop top and that incredible abundant anatomy. Hilda is the only known ample sized icon in pin-up history that I have come upon. And yes, she very well does qualify as an icon.
The John Birch Society was an extremist organization in the 1960s which relentlessly characterized the Civil Rights Movement as a Communist plot. They published many pamphlets deriding MLK as a violent man and suggesting he was a Soviet agent.
Among the people who belonged to the John Birch Society were its co-founder Fred Koch, his billionaire son Charles Koch, and a Wisconsin lecturer named Paul Weyrich.
While they did have lunatic support, the John Birch Society was dismissed and discredited by most Americans. The majority of the Republican Party felt they were too extremist and did harm to the GOP.
Richard Nixon called them “dictatorial and totalitarian [having] rendered immeasurable harm to the cause of individual liberty.“
Bob Dylan and George Carlin mocked the John Birch Society in their early performances. Jokes at their expense could be seen everywhere from the Tonight Show to Mad Magazine.
Conceding that they were a laughing stock, many of its operatives fled in order to rebrand and re-strategize. Starting anew in the 1970s, the radical extremists started front groups, now known as “think tanks,” which propagated the Birch-style philosophy. But this time they had enormous billionaire support.
Paul Weyrich co-founded the Heritage Foundation, the Christian Coalition, and the Moral Majority. He argued that slavery was harder on the slave owner than the enslaved. He had close connections to prominent members of the extremist Christian Reconstructionist movement.
Charles Koch became the most notorious briber of the political system, lobbying so aggressively that he managed to re-write the laws of the United States for his own selfish gain.
Sixty years later, through the relentless use of corporate lobbyists and legalized graft, media consolidation and the power of propaganda, the John Birch Society philosophy - once discredited as too extreme - took hold.
They’re still around today, btw. They have several different podcasts and video channels turning out content every week. This isn’t some ghost of the past.
