When Lily Potter heard the crash on October 31th 1981 she knew.
But for a second, she hoped.
It had been months since the last time one of their friends had dared to pull a prank. But there used to be a time where Lily wouldn’t have even blinked after hearing a crash or a scream.
A time where every time she turned a corner, she expected James to be there, pulling a face to scare her.
A time where Sirius and James would try to fit on a broom together, trying to get up to the girls dormitory to scare them awake.
A time where Lily wasn’t afraid of every noise she heard at night, after months of hiding to protect their little family.
So she knew, but just for a moment, the child inside her, that had to grow up so quickly, hoped that it was just another prank.
But then she heard her husband yell for her to run, to protect their son, to live. But just as quick as her little ray of childish hope had come, it had vanished and she knew what was to come.
