He felt weird about it. He said it was probably too much, and he did not want to make it awkward. I asked him what she had done. He said she had quietly run his calendar, his inbox, and most of his life for two years while he scaled his company from $3M to $11M. He had never met her in person. I told him to pay her $8,000. He paused. Then he laughed. Then he wired it that afternoon. She cried on our next check in call. She paid off her parents’ house in Cebu the following week. There is a whole conversation happening on the internet right now about whether paying someone in the Philippines $5 an hour is exploitation or empowerment. The people debating it have never hired a Filipino team member. They have never sat across from one in a Zoom and watched her tell you she just bought her family their first car. They have never seen what one fair salary does to three generations of one household. Here is what I know after five years and over 1,000 placements. The companies that treat their offshore team like contractors get contractor work. The companies that treat them like teammates get a person who will run through a wall for them at 2am their time. The math is not subtle. Pay well. Send the bonus. Fly them out for the offsite. Put them on the company directory with everyone else. The cost difference is rounding error. The loyalty you get back is the thing your competitors cannot buy. The cheapest way to hire offshore is to hire offshore poorly. The most expensive way is to do it right. The most expensive way is also the only one that compounds.

You’re just a group of individuals running in different directions with fancy toys. The real ROI of AI isn’t in individual brilliance—it’s in how teams use it together. 🌟 If your team’s using AI, ask: Are we communicating and coordinating, or just AI-ing in silos?

Lately I’ve been seeing the same question in PH freelancer groups: “How do you know if a job post or client is legit?” And honestly… I get it. More people are entering freelancing right now. More opportunities, but also more scammers. Some pretend to be clients. Some pretend to be agencies. Sometimes freelancers are unknowingly used to scam other freelancers. There’s no perfect formula to guarantee every opportunity online is legit. But a few habits can protect you. Here are some that helped me over the years: 1. Strengthen your LinkedIn network LinkedIn gives you better visibility into real professionals and companies. Many opportunities come from conversations, not job boards. 2. Build your portfolio before chasing clients Make it clear: • who you are • what you do • what problems you solve A strong portfolio lets you apply faster and vet opportunities better. 3. Do a quick company check Before replying to a job post: • Do they have a real website? • Are they using a proper company email? • Do they show who they are? Legit companies leave a digital footprint. 4. Legit clients focus on your skills Interviews usually sound like: • What tools do you use? • What experience do you have? • What campaigns have you handled? If the conversation suddenly shifts to unrelated personal questions… 🚩 Pause muna. 5. Be clear about payment terms I learned this the hard way. Years ago I worked an entire month for a client… and never got paid. Since then: Invoice first. Work after payment terms are secured. Freelancing opens a lot of doors. Protecting yourself is part of the job too. If this helps a fellow freelancer avoid a bad experience, feel free to share it.

Right now, people are scrambling for work and opportunities in every corner of the internet, both locally and internationally. Unfortunately, scammers know that. Some pretend to be clients. Some pretend to be agencies. And in some cases, freelancers are even being used to unknowingly scam other freelancers. It’s messy. The hard truth? There’s no single guarantee that an opportunity online is 100% legit. But there are ways to protect yourself. Ways to strengthen your network. Ways to spot red flags earlier. Ways to be more intentional when choosing the clients you work with. Freelancing shouldn’t feel like walking through a minefield. If you're new and trying to figure things out — you're not alone. Maybe it’s time we start sharing more openly about how we vet clients and avoid ghost job posts.

It already provides a legal framework for private companies to offer work-from-home arrangements for roles that can. Equal pay. Equal benefits. Clear structure. It’s not radical. It’s not new. It’s already law. Now fuel prices are rising again. Transport costs go up. Food prices follow. Everything follows. And ordinary Filipinos — especially working parents — are left adjusting. Again. We didn’t sign up for global conflicts. But we absorb the impact. So here’s a genuine question: If the infrastructure for telecommuting already exists… why isn’t it being maximized? Flexible work isn’t just convenience. For many families, it’s economic relief. It’s hours saved in traffic. It’s money not spent on daily commute. It’s time gained with children. This isn’t about preference. It’s about practicality. When solutions already exist, inaction becomes a choice.

For years, plenty of Aussie business owners assumed hiring offshore put them outside Fair Work laws. The Pascua v Doessel Group case ended that assumption — first ruled in 2024, upheld by the Full Bench in 2025. The Commission found a Manila-based "contractor" was actually an Australian employee, because she worked Aussie hours, used company systems, and reported to Australian managers. If that sounds like your offshore team, you could be liable for: Australian minimum wage ($26.44/hr from 1 July 2026, vs local rates) Unpaid overtime and penalty rates Leave under the National Employment Standards Unfair dismissal claims The lesson: "out of sight" no longer means "out of jurisdiction." Direct "contractor" agreements for full-time roles carry the highest risk. What most businesses are moving to? An Employer of Record (EOR) model — so local Philippine law applies, not the Fair Work Act. Don't wait for an underpayment claim to audit your offshore structure. Ten years ago, I joined the interview, hoping I'd be the right fit for SocialGen. I had no idea that I was about to find a place that would shape me into the person I am today. Over the last decade, SocialGen became so much more than where I worked. It became the backdrop of some of the biggest moments of my life. This team watched me grow not just in my career, but as a person. They celebrated my wins, picked me up after my failures, challenged me to be better, and reminded me that I was never alone. They watched my children grow up. They became part of my story. Looking back, I realize that the work was only one part of the journey. The real gift was the people. The conversations, the laughter, the inside jokes, the late nights, the moments of encouragement, the countless times we showed up for one another. Those are the memories I'll carry with me long after today. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that the impact we leave isn't measured by the projects we finish or the titles we hold. It's measured by the people whose lives we touch. I hope that in some small way, I was able to give back even a fraction of what all of you have given me. I leave with a heart that is both heavy and incredibly full. Saying goodbye is one of the hardest things I've ever had to do because I'm not just leaving a company. I'm saying goodbye to people who became family. To every person I've had the privilege of working with over these past 10 years: thank you. Thank you for believing in me. Thank you for trusting me. And it finds a better way to the same destination. 🛜 That is the part most professionals miss. 🟡 Recalculating is not retreat. It is the system working exactly as designed. 🟡 The executives I have sat across from who built careers worth studying were not the ones who never took a wrong role. 🟡 They were the ones who could tell the difference between a problem worth solving and a road that does not go where they need to go. 🟡 Staying in the wrong seat to avoid the appearance of a mistake is not resilience.
