Component Description

OIG investigative records are maintained for all ongoing and closed matters received after April 14, 1989. Audit reports are maintained from 1986 and inspection reports are maintained from April 14, 1989. The OIG also maintains records relating to the administration of the office.

FOIA Guides and Resources

  • DOJ Reference Guide: A comprehensive guide to the FOIA that serves as a handbook for obtaining information from the Department.
  • DOJ Guide to the FOIA: A comprehensive legal treatise on the FOIA, including detailed discussions on the FOIA’s procedural requirements, nine exemptions, and litigation considerations.
  • DOJ FOIA Regulations: These rules, 28 C.F.R. part 16, subpart A, detail the Department of Justice's procedures for implementing the FOIA.

FOIA Exclusions

Congress excluded three discrete categories of law enforcement and national security records from the requirements of the FOIA. See 5 U.S.C. § 552 (2012 & Supp. V 2017). OIG responses to all FOIA requests are limited to those records that are subject to the requirements of the FOIA. This is a standard notification that is given to all our requesters and should not be taken as an indication that excluded records do, or do not, exist.

General Information About Making a FOIA Request

  • Under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) (5 U.S.C. §552) and Department of Justice regulations, any person may request OIG records.
  • All FOIA requests must be made in writing and mailed to the above address. Alternatively, requests may be electronically sent to oigfoia@usdoj.gov or you may send a FOIA request online through FOIA.gov.
  • All individuals requesting records about themselves must verify their identity before the OIG will process the request. One verification method is to complete DOJ Form 361 (Certificate of Identity) and attach it to the request.
  • For more information on submitting FOIA requests to Department of Justice components, see How to Make a FOIA Request to DOJ.

Multitrack Processing

OIG FOIA requests are placed in one of three tracks. Track one is for those requests which seek and receive expedited processing pursuant to subsection (a)(6)(E) of the FOIA. The second track is for those requests which do not involve voluminous records or lengthy consultations with other entities. Track three is for those requests which involve voluminous records and for which lengthy or numerous consultations are required, or those requests which may involve sensitive records.
