The McDonnell Douglas MD-80 is a series twin engined, singled aisle, short to medium range aircraft. This series where an updated version of the DC-9, with new stretched aircraft. The series includes the MD-81, MD-82, MD-83, MD-87, and MD-88, each type is the same length except the MD-87 what has a shortened fuselage.
The only difference between the other models is the, engines and fuel. capacities. The McDonnell Douglas MD-88 has a new flight deck what was added to later production models.

Aircraft Series:
MD-81 The MD-81 (or as it was originally known the DC-9 Super 81) was the first production model of the MD-80. MD-82 The MD-82 was equipped with new more powerful engines and petter payload. American Airlines at one point operated more then 300 -82 models. MD-83 The MD-83 is slightly longer then the -81 & -81 and also has more powerful engines., increased fuel capacity and higher weights. MD-87 This model is the shortest in the MD-80 series (more like the DC-9). It could seat 109-130 passengers. MD-88 The MD-88 was the last model designed, it had an EFIS cockpit. Delta Airlines had orders and options for more then 80 aircraft. It was similar to the MD-82/83 but had a new wind shear warning system and a new cabin interior. MD-80 Advanced At the end of 1990 McDonnell Douglas revealed a MD-80 improvement package. This idea of new engines and updated aircraft was scrapped in 1991. |
