okay so this post is wrong but what the heck it’s a Tumblr post, right, it’s mostly a joke, only it’s so perfectly echoing an idea I’ve seen elsewhere too, from actual paid critics and academic critiques, that Hugo “wasn’t writing for emotional teenagers”, that he’d be horrified by fandom, that he was too High and Erudite for the likes of screaming theater kids and emotional teenagers
y’all. Y’all.
Victor Hugo knew what fandom was. And he absolutely LOVED it.

I bring to you all this Barricade Day offering: my favorite Les Miserables parody/adaptation.

Note attached by Victor Hugo to the final part of the manuscript of Les Miserables and sent to his publisher, Albert Lacroix on the 20th of May 1862. Of Hugo's signature (simply the letter "V") Lacroix remarked: " This V does not stand for Victor… This V stands for Victory!" [source 1, 2]
This word gamin was printed for the first time, and reached popular speech through the literary tongue, in 1834. It is in a little work entitled Claude Gueux that this word made its appearance.
I wonder what genius wrote Claude Gueux (Victor Hugo.)
Also, this is not even true! (Do you really think Victor Hugo would do that, just go into the Les Mis and tell lies?)
According to Christine Donougher’s footnotes on this:
Claude Gueux: In fact the word *gamin* appears in print in earlier texts than Hugo’s short story of 1834, not least in Hugo’s *Notre-Dame de Paris* (1831, bk II, ch. 5).
