fix(mobile): home no longer says "No threads yet" while an environment is still connecting - #28664
On a cold start with no cached shell snapshot, the mobile home screen says "No threads yet" and offers "Add environment" while an existing environment is still connecting. The threads appear seconds later. Reproduced on an Android emulator (Pixel 9, T3 Code Dev client, dev server with one project and four threads):
Settings → Client Storage → clear caches.
Stop the server and cold-relaunch the app. Home shows "No threads yet" under a "Reconnecting to " header.
Start the server again. The four threads appear.
Change
deriveEmptyState moves out of HomeScreen.tsx into features/home/home-empty-state.ts unchanged, so it can be tested. Two branches fall through to "No threads yet" before the first snapshot has loaded, and the fix closes both:
A retry after a failed first connect. The connection presentation keeps the last failure in connectionError while the environment is reconnecting. The "Connecting to environment" branch required connectionError === null, so the retry skipped it. It now applies to any connecting or reconnecting environment until a snapshot is loaded.
A connected environment whose first snapshot is still pending. This now shows "Loading threads" with a spinner.
"No threads yet" is now reserved for a loaded snapshot with no threads. The offline/error/unsupported, no-projects and loading-environments states are unchanged, and so is the "Add environment" action.
vp test run apps/mobile/src/features/home/home-empty-state.test.ts:
"shows a loading state, not an empty thread list, while retrying a failed first connect" and "shows a loading state, not an empty thread list, while the first snapshot is still loading" both fail on main with expected 'No threads yet' not to be 'No threads yet'.
Both pass with this change.
workspace-connection-status.test.ts and workspaceModel.test.ts still pass (7/7 across the three files).
vp run check:changed: format, lint, knip, typecheck (2 packages), tests and react compiler all pass.
Android emulator (Pixel 9, one lease for both sides), cold start with no cached snapshot and the server unreachable:
Reconnecting after a failed first connect, no cache
"No threads yet" + "Add environment" under "Reconnecting to fs-42"
"Connecting to environment" + spinner (+ the unchanged "Add environment") under the same header
Server reachable again

The zero-threshold diff between the two "reconnecting" frames lights only the empty-state block and the status-bar clock. These captures are not attached to this PR.
Not checked on a device: the "connected, first snapshot pending" state. On a real server it lasts well under a second, so it is covered by the unit test only. Not checked: iOS. The derivation has no platform branch, so iOS gets the same states.

…he first snapshot
These tests reproduce #28640: with no shell snapshot, a reconnecting retry
after a failed first connect, and a connected environment whose snapshot is
still pending, both fall through to the empty-thread-list state instead of a
loading state.

…st snapshot
A reconnecting environment keeps its last failure in connectionError, which
excluded it from the connecting state, and a connected environment whose first
shell snapshot was still pending had no loading state. Both fell through to
"No threads yet".

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Mobile home now displays connecting or loading status instead of prematurely showing “No threads yet.” The change is confined to empty-state text and the loading indicator, without altering connection behavior or stored data.

Walkthrough
The home screen now uses an extracted helper to select empty-state content. The helper returns loading states during a reconnecting first connection and while the first shell snapshot is pending. Tests cover both conditions.
The exported helper selects the title, detail, and loading flag based on connection state, shell snapshot state, and project count.
Integrate and test empty-state selection apps/mobile/src/features/home/HomeScreen.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/home/home-empty-state.test.ts
HomeScreen imports the extracted helper. Tests expect loading states during a failed first-connection retry and while the first shell snapshot is pending.
The change improves loading states without introducing the remaining misleading messages. No new merge-blocking risk is evident.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Requirements from #28640 (direct, open, apps/mobile): show a loading or connection state, not "No threads yet", until the app knows whether threads exist. "No threads yet" must appear only after relevant environments load and are empty. The issue names two code paths: (1) a reconnecting environment with a retained connection error, and (2) a connected environment with a pending first snapshot.
Path (1): In apps/mobile/src/features/home/home-empty-state.ts, the "Connecting to environment" branch (loading: true) now checks only hasConnectingEnvironment && !hasLoadedShellSnapshot. The former connectionError === null condition is removed. workspaceModel.ts sets hasConnectingEnvironment from environments in the connecting or reconnecting state, so a reconnecting environment with connectionError set reaches this branch.
Path (2): The new "Loading threads" branch (loading: true) applies when hasPendingShellSnapshot && !hasLoadedShellSnapshot.
"No threads yet" is returned only after the no-projects check, which requires hasLoadedShellSnapshot. Offline, error, unsupported, no-connections and loading-connections branches are unchanged.
Unit tests in home-empty-state.test.ts cover both paths and assert title is not "No threads yet" and loading is true.
Cached-snapshot display is existing behavior (hasLoadedShellSnapshot short-circuits the empty state). The issue's cache-hydration profiling and #26667 connection speed are not required and are not claimed by this PR.
Residual uncertainty: the connected state with neither hasPendingShellSnapshot nor hasLoadedShellSnapshot still returns "No threads yet". Whether client-runtime sets hasSynchronizingShell before the first snapshot request was not inspected. The two reported paths are covered in code. Device verification covered only path (1); path (2) is covered by unit test only, as the PR states.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The reviewed diff from merge base 8760d06 to head e173486 has three parts, all tied to the linked issue:
apps/mobile/src/features/home/HomeScreen.tsx: removes the deriveEmptyState function (+1/-67) and imports it from ./home-empty-state. The move is needed for unit testing the empty-state logic named in the PR.
apps/mobile/src/features/home/home-empty-state.ts: new module containing deriveEmptyState. Its branch logic contains the two fixes for #28640.
apps/mobile/src/features/home/home-empty-state.test.ts: new unit tests for the two fixed paths.
No change touches cache hydration, connection timing, networking, or other screens. Those areas are named in #26667 and in the issue's profiling note, and the PR does not alter them. The PR description and objectives state the same scope. No unrelated change was found.

Do not report an empty thread list before a snapshot loads.
If the shell stream fails while the environment remains connected, the shell can have no snapshot and no pending synchronization. This fallback then displays “No threads yet” with no spinner, although thread availability is unknown. Handle the no-snapshot shell-error state before this fallback. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Keep the pending branch independent of shellSnapshotError. Extend loading only for error-free connected startup.
A connected environment whose shell has no snapshot and is not yet synchronizing falls through to "No threads yet". The shell status is "empty" until the shell cache finishes loading, so hasPendingShellSnapshot stays false. The helper has no branch for this state. hasSyncingConnectedEnvironment is present in WorkspaceState but deriveEmptyState never reads it.
Keep the existing pending condition as it is. Add a connected-startup case that requires shellSnapshotError === null, so a shell error elsewhere does not hide the pending state.
