fix(scripts): test:cached no longer crashes when vp writes no cache summary - #28651
With --report or --verify-hits, scripts/test-cached.ts reads the newest last-summary.json under the task cache after vp run test-cache returns. When vp fails before running any task (for example, it cannot initialize the cache), there is no summary to read. The script then throws ENOENT or ENOTDIR from readdirSync, or reads summaryFiles[0]! as undefined. The job log ends in a stack trace instead of vp's own error. No report is written, so the following Upload test cache measurements step in CI fails as well (if-no-files-found: error).
The newest summary is also not necessarily this run's. If an older summary is still on disk, or another vp run in the same checkout wrote the latest one, the script reports it as if this run had written it, and --verify-hits re-runs that other run's cache hits.
Change
vp keeps one last-summary.json per cache directory and every vp run rewrites it, so neither the newest file nor its modification time shows which run wrote it. Each test:cached run now passes a random id in T3_CACHED_TESTS. cachedTestTasks adds an uncached test-cache:run task whose command carries that id, and every test task depends on it. It runs first, so it stays in the summary even when a test fails. readRunSummary(cacheRoot, run) in scripts/lib/cached-tests.ts returns the summary that lists that command. It returns undefined when the cache root cannot be read (missing, or a file) or when no summary matches.
When there is no summary from this run, the script prints one line naming the cache root and skips verification. It still writes the report (with summary: null) and the step summary, and exits non-zero: vp's own status if vp failed, otherwise 1. Before this change, that case also failed the job, but by crashing.
The new dependency and the per-run id leave each test task's cache key unchanged, so existing local and remote cache entries still hit. The script no longer reads the wall clock, so the globalDate:off suppression an earlier commit in this PR added is gone, and the final diff adds no diagnostic suppression.
Scope and approval
This is a small fix for an obvious bug in a CI script, with no product behavior change, so it qualifies without a prior issue under CONTRIBUTING. It changes how the script finds the summary and what it does when there is none. Each run also starts one node -e "" before its tests.
Verification
The summary case in scripts/lib/cached-tests.test.ts covers a missing cache root, a cache root that is a file, another run's summary, and this run's summary. On the previous head it failed with ENOTDIR. The real-vp integration case now reads every summary through readRunSummary, with a new run id for each run, and its expected cache-hit counts are unchanged. vp test run scripts/lib/cached-tests.test.ts: 8 passed.
Ran node scripts/test-cached.ts --report <file> scripts/lib/sharded-tests.test.ts with VITE_CACHE_PATH pointing at a file. vp printed Failed to initialize cache: Not a directory. On main, the script then crashed with an ENOTDIR stack trace and wrote no report. With this change, it printed No task summary from this run in …, wrote the report and step summary, and exited 1.
Ran the same command twice against one cache. The second run hit the cache for the test task under a different run id.
Ran two test:cached commands at once with different test files and one shared cache. Each report listed only its own tasks, and --verify-hits 1 verified only its own hit.
vp run check:changed passes.
Not checked: a CI run that hits this path. If another vp run rewrites the summary between this run's exit and the read, the script reports no summary and exits 1 rather than using the other run's data.
Prior PRs
#24966 by Julius Marminge added test:cached and its report. No open or closed PR changes how it reads the summary.
`vp run test:cached --report` and `--verify-hits` read the newest
last-summary.json under the task cache after vp ran. When vp failed before
running tasks, the cache root could be missing (ENOENT) or hold no summary,
so the script crashed, hid vp's real error and wrote no report. When an
older summary existed, it was reported, and its hits re-executed, as if
this run had written it.
readRunSummary now returns only a summary written at or after the run
started, or undefined. Without one, test-cached prints one line, verifies
nothing, still writes the report (summary: null) and step summary, and
keeps vp's exit status.

Before, a missing summary crashed the script, so the job failed even when
vp exited 0. Keep that outcome now that the report is written, so
--verify-hits cannot pass with nothing checked.

Walkthrough
Cached-test requests now use run identifiers to associate generated tasks with a specific run. The script reads the matching summary for cache-hit selection and reporting, and handles cases where no matching summary is available.

Summary
Run ID validation and task generation scripts/lib/cached-tests.ts, scripts/lib/cached-tests.test.ts
Requests must include a run ID with only word characters or hyphens. Generated test tasks depend on an uncached task that executes the run ID. Tests provide run IDs and cover validation and task behavior.
Run summary lookup scripts/lib/cached-tests.ts, scripts/lib/cached-tests.test.ts
readRunSummary searches cache directories for a summary with a task command matching the requested run. Tests cover missing or unreadable summaries, a different run, and a matching run.
Script integration and subprocess tests scripts/test-cached.ts, scripts/lib/cached-tests.test.ts
The script generates a run ID and reads its matching summary. If no summary is found, it logs an error and sets a failing exit code. Cache-hit selection uses an empty task list when the summary is unavailable, and the report stores null. Subprocess tests pass the run ID and use readRunSummary to count cache hits.

vp keeps one last-summary.json per cache and every `vp run` rewrites it, so
a modification time newer than the start did not prove the summary came from
this run. Each run now gets an id carried by an uncached `test-cache:run` task
that every test task depends on; the summary is the one listing that task.
A cache path that cannot be read as a directory now counts as no summary
instead of throwing.

Verified head d8f62ccae6824d107c1fd5cceefbe1e9a9c3d662 on a disposable Linux VM. This PR changes the cached-test CLI, so its behavioral proof is the actual scripts/test-cached.ts command, not an app screenshot.
Reproduced on github/main (82b10d546c): a file at VITE_CACHE_PATH caused vp's cache initialization error followed by an ENOTDIR stack trace, with no report or step summary.
On the PR, the same real command preserves exit 1, writes summary: null and an empty verification list, and writes the step summary without a stack trace.
Found and fixed a nearby failure: a corrupt stale sibling summary hid a valid current-run summary and made successful tests exit 1. The lookup now skips corrupt candidates. The added assertion in the existing summary case failed before this fix and passes after it.
Re-ran the real cached command with the corrupt sibling retained: exit 0 and the correct run marker. Repeated with --verify-hits 1: one cache hit, one uncached re-execution, exit 0. The existing real-vp integration test also passes cache reuse, invalidation and failed-test coverage.
vp run check:changed 8760d063e903406c8e8f695b0852c0a15fc1e00f passed through blacksmith-check: format, lint, both knip checks, six affected package typechecks, and nine tests across two files.
Started the real dev app in the background after vp i, using isolated state and one dev server at a time. Playwright with /usr/bin/google-chrome added a real local git project, selected Codex gpt-6.1-sol, and submitted a real tool-using turn. It returned the correct README heading and branch. After restarting the fixed app, the project/thread persisted and a second real turn confirmed the workspace was clean. This checks app/provider health separately from the script fix.
Hosted CI's cache-initialization failure and remote-cache hits were not exercised; the command checks used local task caching on the Blacksmith worker. Native desktop, iOS/Android, macOS and Windows execution were not exercised on this Linux VM. No UI behavior changed in this PR. Concurrent writers can still overwrite vp's single summary; the run-identity check rejects unrelated summaries rather than reporting their tasks.
