[Bug]: iPad thread header buttons disappear after switching apps and back; only a force-quit restores them #28551
I searched existing issues and did not find a duplicate.
I included enough detail to reproduce or investigate the problem.
Area
apps/mobile
Steps to reproduce
On iPad, in landscape split view (sidebar + thread), open any existing thread. The header shows the sidebar toggle and New task on the left, and terminal, git and files on the right.
Switch to another app.
Switch back to T3 Code.
Expected behavior
The thread header keeps its buttons.
Actual behavior
The whole header button row is gone: sidebar toggle, New task, terminal, git and files. Only the title and subtitle remain.
Nothing in the app brings the buttons back. Opening a different thread from the sidebar and rotating the iPad and back both leave the row missing. Only force-quitting and relaunching the app restores it. It doesn't happen on every app switch, but it has happened repeatedly.
Impact
Major degradation or frequent failure
Version or commit
T3 Code iPad app (current build as of 2026-11-01); server is T3 Code (Beta) desktop 0.1.6
Environment
iPad, landscape, split view; connected to a macOS desktop server
Screenshots, recordings, or supporting files
Other content redacted.
Normal:
After switching apps and back:
Workaround
Force-quit and relaunch the app.
Notes
Since even opening another thread (new title, new header options) doesn't restore the items, the native header items seem to be lost below NativeStackScreenOptions (apps/mobile/src/native/StackHeader.tsx) rather than skipped by its signature check. That's a guess from reading the code, not something I traced on device.
I tried to reproduce this on current main (ce9e016) with the iPad dev build on an iPad Pro 13-inch (M5) simulator, in landscape split view (sidebar + thread), connected to a T3 Code server on another machine over Tailscale. I opened an existing thread and checked the header after each of these:
switching to Settings and back, 5 times, a few seconds each
45 seconds in another app before coming back
going through the app switcher
light → dark → light while T3 Code was in the background, then 3 more switches with dark mode as the base
rotating to portrait and back while in the background, and returning in portrait
stopping the server while the app was backgrounded, returning to "Reconnecting", then starting it again
hiding the sidebar, then switching apps
The sidebar toggle, New task, terminal, git and files buttons stayed in every case.
Could you add:
iPadOS version, and the T3 Code version and build number (Settings → About in the app).
Your multitasking mode (Settings → Multitasking & Gestures: Full Screen Apps, Windowed Apps, or Stage Manager), and whether another app was next to T3 Code or in Slide Over when it happened.
Roughly how long T3 Code was in the background, and how you switched away (home gesture, app switcher, Dock, another app's notification or link).
Whether the keyboard was open, or a turn was running in that thread, when you switched away.
A screen recording that covers the switch away and back, if you can catch one.
