On-screen keyboard doesn't appear when tapping input line in Termux/proot-distro (fixed by CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_MOUSE=1) #106540

Open

Description

@jojobommm-dot

Describe the bug

On Android (Termux → proot-distro Debian), the on-screen keyboard does not appear when tapping the input line in Claude Code. Touch taps are captured as mouse events by the TUI, so Termux never receives the "focus" tap that opens the soft keyboard.

Setting CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_MOUSE=1 fixes it: with CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_MOUSE=1 claude the keyboard appears normally when tapping the input line.

Environment

  • Claude Code: 2.1.316
  • Device: Android phone, Termux + proot-distro
  • OS: Debian GNU/Linux 13 (trixie), aarch64
  • Kernel: 6.17.0-PRoot-Distro
  • Shell: bash
  • TERM=xterm-256color, COLORTERM=truecolor

Steps to reproduce

  1. In Termux run proot-distro login debian
  2. Run claude
  3. Tap the input line

Expected behavior

The on-screen keyboard appears.

Actual behavior

The keyboard does not appear.

Workaround

export CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_MOUSE=1 (or set it under env in ~/.claude/settings.json).

Suggestion

Disable mouse capture automatically when running under Termux/proot (or on touch-only terminals), or document CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_MOUSE for mobile terminals.

Possibly related: #103614 (mouse reports inserted into the prompt in fullscreen TUI).
