Enhancement Suggestion - Color-Coded Log Messages #2258

Open

Description

@sproggit

I'm writing to ask if it might be possible to apply a color scheme to the web-based Log Display option in the Web Admin, "Logs" >> "View Logs" option.

My logs are typically a low number of Mb daily and for simple event triage [and health checks] it is practical to use the Web panels to check for log content.

Currently, all log output is written with a timestamp header and then by providing basic information, all rendered in monochrome black text on the screen. However, this means that unless you know in advance exactly what text string to search for, spotting an actual error message, as opposed to an activity message can be quite frustrating.

Different log events are written by different parts of Technitium's internal logic. One of my examples this weekend related to one of my UAT DNS Servers being unable to reach my locally-hosted custom blocklists. Technitium thew an error, of course, but spotting it in hundreds of lines of text was ... fun. It just occurred to me as I was trawling through the files that since Technitium "knows" which events it considers to be "Events", "Warnings" and "Errors", it might be possible to apply simple HTML Text color changes so that warnings came up in say Amber or Orange and errors were displayed in Red text.

This might make it a lot easier for Administrator's of busy resolvers to quickly scan the logs and find the more suspicious messages.

Clearly this isn't an urgent requirement, but it might be a useful usability enhancement for the future.
Thanks for your consideration.

    Thanks for the request. The logs are just simple text logs and thus its not really feasible to apply color scheme for it in its current format.

    There is planned change in how the logging is done along with support for notifications. This change would clearly mark error log entries with tags like "info", "error", or "warning" and also raise notification alerts. So something like this can be attempted to be implemented when working on it.
