For the field is full of shades as I near the shadowy coast,

And a ghostly batsman plays to the bowling of a ghost,

And I look through my tears on a soundless-clapping host

As the run-stealers flicker to and fro,
To and fro

Hello

Hi, I'm Jack. I've been an editor here since 2005, and I've also been active on Simple Wikipedia. I have many interests, but you'll usually find me working on the history of cricket. The lines above are from a classic poem called At Lord's by Francis Thompson (1859–1907).

I have a second account called BeachBoyJack (BBJ). That's for when I'm on a shared server and the vibrations begin. BBJ was created in unusual circumstances, when I briefly lost password access to this account, and needed help from the Wikimedia Foundation's Trust and Safety team (WFTS).

Please note that I no longer take part in discussions with the exception of article reviews. I will answer questions raised on my own talk page, but I am not interested in forums, which are a total waste of time and space, and I reserve the right to ignore pings unless someone genuinely needs assistance.

Happy editing.

WANTED!
Dead or Alive:
for "occuring"!

I should be ashamed of it but I'm 90% sure that this ham fisted effort on 12 April 2005 was my first-ever WP edit (I did actually visit that show when it was on at the ExCeL). The edit needed an immediate fix, but it was a whole month before someone corrected "occuring"!

I think I did a handful of other IP edits, including one at Harold Wilson, before I decided to sign up on 31 July 2005.

I don't take much notice of my edit count, which is a biggie, but it amused me to see that this edit was number 123,456. Ha!

Ongoing

These are what I'm working on in May 2026:

Priorities

First mentions

  • Currently double-checking these sections in the season reviews. 1762 next.

Articles under construction

To be reviewed

Articles needed

Club lists

Need to make sure these four include all players (Middlesex is new, and has only a handful), and that there are no unnecessary redirects:

Include all players in the "first mentions" section of each season review.

Have added teams & dates, and identified redirects. Players will need to be included in their "first mentions" season reviews.

Berkshire and Old Field, Bray

Sandbox2 has content to improve these two.

A long way from completion. Matching with season reviews to identify first mentions.

Now a complete list, but it needs more references. Also, it will be matched with first mentions in season reviews.

Again, matching dates with season reviews to identify first mentions.

Work in progress which, again, will match dates with season reviews to identify first mentions.

Cricketer stubs

  • User:BilledMammal/BlackJack Cricketer Stubs
  • And what can I say about this? Mixed feelings, actually. I agree, now, that short stubs with little or no potential for growth should be redirected to a team/club list. What I don't like is the false urgency and the vilification of Lugnuts. Anyway, I've said I will review the BlackJack Cricketer Stubs, so there we are.
  • Wow! There's 1,175 of the bloody things. Oh, well.....

Thank you for speaking out in your complaint to WP:ANI. Wanted to make it clear that you aren't crazy and that your complaint was justified. Thought it was worth giving you a barnstar because I know admins didn't believe you either. Users who blatantly abuse the system but are defended by admins make the wiki worse. You are making the wiki better by speaking out and standing by the truth. Desertambition (talk) 08:13, 10 April 2022 (UTC)

"all things historical"

Thank you for quality articles about history, from personal influence such as Winston Churchill to large time frames such as Bury F.C. and 10th millennium BC with scientific background, for good sports at the 1903 FA Cup Final, for reviewing articles towards good and highest quality. you are an awesome Wikipedian!
