The October Daye Series - Seanan McGuire
I could honestly just shortcut this and say read everything Seanan McGuire has written, either under her own name or her pen name Mira Grant, but where’s the fun in that when I can write a detailed love letter to each one? I’ll start with my first love: the October Daye series, starting with Seanan McGuire’s first published novel: Rosemary and Rue.
October Daye is a changeling, daughter of a fae woman and a mortal man, and the best (or okay, only) detective Faerie has to offer. She used to be a knight, but when Faerie world cost her fourteen years of her life and her mortal family, she retreated. Now she’s working as a cashier at Safeway and avoiding everyone she formerly cared about, but she can’t avoid the magical world for long. Eventually, a murder drags her kicking and screaming back into the world she left behind.
And that’s just the beginning. Rosemary and Rue and the second book, A Local Habitation, both have their charms, but the story really picks up in book three, An Artificial Night. That starts off a wild ride that is still ongoing, filled with stunning worldbuilding, fantastic characters, slowburn romance, and all the found family a girl could want. October might start out a gritty loner pushing aside all personal relationships, but through the course of the series, she learns to soften up and actually accept help. It’s a welcome change from the gritty “I work alone” type heroes. It is also delightful to watch the political disasters Toby tends to leave in her wake, usually only semi-intentionally, and to wonder just how big her laundry bill will be this time. She rarely escapes a book without getting covered in blood.
This is by far my favorite urban fantasy series, and I recommend it heartily to any fans of the genre. If you like the Dresden Files, you’ll love this.
