First time uploading. Made a mess and I'm not sure how to fix it
[edit]The file Viossa Flag.png had a notice to create an SVG for it, which I did. However, I made two versions of the flag. One was an exact recreation of the original file (which due to a mistake (not by a Wikimedia user, but the external source) had a ratio of 593:398), while the other one was a one with a restored ratio of 3:2. The community the flag represents voted to upload the 3:2 version to replace the old one and keep the old ratio as an alternate version. The problem is that since I uploaded this fixed version, I uploaded an image that was NOT an exact SVG recreation of the old file. Later, we came to the conclusion that we should've uploaded the fixed ratio version as something like Viossa Flag (3-2).svg. Right now, the flags have already been marked for deletion, since the fixed version doesn't have any external sources yet to confirm it's actually being used. I'm currently waiting for a file mover to rename the files to hopefully fix the issue. Please let me know how we should proceed. Thanks a lot in advance for your time and help. JanLisaki (talk) 01:26, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- Convenience links: File:Viossa Flag.svg, File:Traditional Viossa Flag.svg. - Jmabel ! talk 03:29, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- And also: File:Viossa Flag.png.
- @JanLisaki: I've commented on the deletion request. I believe these will probably be kept.
The community the flag represents
: that is rather confusing. Meaning that the speakers of this pidgin dialect had a formal vote? Or meaning something else?fixed ratio
aren't all SVG files "fixed ratio"? How would you make a variable-ratio SVG? Or do you just mean "preferred ratio"?- It would be much easier to help you if you were clear what you want done. Is there a file you are asking to have renamed? If so, as a non-filemover, for you the "move" tool on the file page will simply allow you to make a request to have the file renamed. - Jmabel ! talk 03:41, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you for the response.
- The community is built around the central Discord server, with probably 99% of speakers being part of it. I held an informal poll in this server for which the handful of eldest community members were notified (though anyone was able to vote). This poll asked whether the 3:2 or botched 593:398 should be uploaded on Wikimedia, with the other one being considered an alternate version. This poll turned out 25 to 11 in favour of the 3:2 flag.
- Yes, I meant "fixed" in the sense of "repaired, restored". Sorry if that was confusing.
- What I am planning to do now is rename the 3:2 flag to Viossa Flag (3-2).svg, and then rename the 593:398 flag to Viossa Flag.svg. I already requested a file mover. I can't request the second renaming yet because currently the 3:2 flag is still "occupying" the name Viossa Flag.svg.
- I was mainly wondering if this is a stupid way to go about things/if there is a better way to fix the mess this created. JanLisaki (talk) 10:12, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- Just dropping a small note to vouch for this user and the situation in general. I am a moderator of the Discord server in question, called simply "Viossa Diskordserver," which has over 6,000 members at this time, hundreds of which message regularly. We did indeed have an informal poll about this (relatively minor) aspect ratio file problem, and this change is part of our group efforts to work on the Viossa article on Wikipedia [1] to remove the issues since it's a high importance article.
- Many thanks in advance to anyone on the helpdesk volunteer team who is able to assist with this small task!
- 💚💚💚

- No, this is not "a stupid way to go about things."
- If you cannot make the move requests in the normal manner, spell out here what file(s) you want moved to what new filename(s), but please do that explicitly in terms of file names, not circumlocutions like " the 3:2 flag". - Jmabel ! talk 03:11, 18 February 2026 (UTC)
- Apologies for the prior language barrier confusion. The requests were indeed made by User JanLisaki using the normal manner of the "move" tool. This help desk post is to confirm that the procedure was being followed correctly. I will rephrase the request here.
- This is the original file: File:Viossa Flag.png
- User JanLisaki is requesting that File:Viossa Flag.svg be renamed, and I personally suggst "Viossa Flag 3x2.svg" based on other files in this page: Category:SVG flags with an aspect ratio of 3:2
- Following this, the flag File:Traditional Viossa Flag.svg is requested to be renamed "Viossa Flag.svg" to match the original PNG version of the file (linked above).
- Again thanks for your time. Looks like you are a veteran of Commons and I salute you for your years of service 🫡 JezzaHehn (talk) 03:30, 18 February 2026 (UTC)
- It looks like ChiK declined the move, most likely because the request gave no indication of the discussion here (e.g. via a permalink). @ChiK: do you still feel that the move was wrong after reading this? - Jmabel ! talk 07:46, 18 February 2026 (UTC)

Patrolling question
[edit]Whne patrolling new files, should I mark a file as patrolled after I tagged it for deletion? The COM:PATROL page says you should, but that's generalized for all new pages. HurricaneZetaC 02:03, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- Yes. If you've marked it for deletion, it doesn't need another patroller to take a look at it. - Jmabel ! talk 03:53, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- HurricaneZeta, I think so, but if you tagged it for speedy deletion it may not matter if gets deleted before any other patroller would look at it. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 04:23, 17 February 2026 (UTC)
- @HurricaneZeta when you click on [Mark as patrolled] it means that you as a patroller have checked it. You have to mark it as such if it is ok, or if you have reverted that particular edit or if you have nominated that certain file for deletion or anything like that. It takes that away from the unpatrolled log. Shaan SenguptaTalk 11:51, 26 February 2026 (UTC)

About CC BY-SA 2.0
[edit]I have a picture that was shared under CC BY-SA 2.0. I airbrushed some objects in it. Do I upload it as "created by me"? When I select that, the box where you're supposed to put in the name of the original author is not shown; which confuses me since the license requires giving attribution to the author. Baltalı İlah (talk) 18:14, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Baltalı İlah In the UploadWizard I think you should click that it was made by someone else, released under CC BY-SA 2.0, and in the author field enter the author's name and (modifications made by Baltalı İlah). Since it's a ShareAlike license, if your changes are significant enough to get copyright protection on their own those changes should also be licensed under CC BY-SA 2.0 or a compatible version. HurricaneZetaC 18:33, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
- Also: when you know the end result you want and can't get it out of Special:UploadWizard there are basically two ways to go:
- use Special:UploadWizard, then hand-edit afterward.
- skip Special:UploadWizard entirely, use Special:Upload and fill everything in by hand before uploading. I normally use Special:Upload, and have used the Wizard only to experiment with it. My usual workflow is to copy the Wikitext of a similar file, paste that into Special:Upload, and edit it there before uploading. - Jmabel ! talk 20:58, 23 February 2026 (UTC)

article submission
[edit]I have a written article for upload It includes photographs from personal items regarding the company referenced. They are not critical to the article, but make it more interesting. Statements in the article include citations, but sources are old and not online. Kristine Weis (talk) 20:10, 23 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Kristine Weis:
- Is this about Draft:Infanseat Company/Infant carriers or something else?
- Is there a question here about Wikimedia Commons (the site on which you are asking this)?
- For what it's worth, there is no problem with using offline sources in the English-language Wikipedia, as long as they are correctly cited. I do not see any proper citations in your draft there, but that is an en-wiki issue, not a Commons issue.

Copyright of an ancient photo with no copyright
[edit]Hello. Using AI I have created a restored version of a well spread and known photo an historical venezuelan character. This person died over 70 years ago —actually 125 years—, so as far as I know his image is free to use, yet I was warned that my image might be deleted. I was totally clear about the fact that the image was created using AI and that the original work is not mine but a extremely low quality image at Wikipedia. How do I state the Copyright of this image correctly? Salvadoroff (talk) 10:51, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
- Hi, the issue at File:Gottfried August Knoche (s.f.).png was just that you weren't clear enough about the original work; you'd said it was "un retrato de estudio vintage" without saying where it specifically came from, and why you believed it to be in the public domain.
- I've now updated the file's description and copyright status based on the response you gave on your talk page. Belbury (talk) 11:26, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
Structured data: copyright license
[edit]So I uploaded File:Archive.is malicious DDoS code screenshot.png and noticed it got added to the hidden Category:Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike missing SDC copyright status. Tried to add structured data:
I get the following errors:
Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International
[edit]An entity with copyright license should also have a statement for copyright status with one of the following values:
- copyrighted
- copyrighted, dedicated to the public domain by copyright holder
- no known copyright restrictions
- not yet determined
copyright status
[edit]An entity with copyright license should also have a statement for copyright status with one of the following values:
- copyrighted
- copyrighted, dedicated to the public domain by copyright holder
- no known copyright restrictions
- not yet determined
copyright status is not a valid qualifier for copyright license – the only valid qualifiers are:
- start time
- end time
- applies to part
- work available at URL
- object named as
- reason for deprecated rank
- reason for preferred rank
- title
- author name string
- latest start date
- ...
Values of copyright license statements should be instances of copyright license (or of a subclass of it), but copyright status currently isn't.
I also tried to add copyright status as a qualifier of the license and remove the copyright status item, but it resulted in a different error:
An entity with copyright license should also have a statement for copyright status with one of the following values:
- copyrighted
- copyrighted, dedicated to the public domain by copyright holder
- no known copyright restrictions
- not yet determined
copyright status is not a valid qualifier for copyright license – the only valid qualifiers are:

- reason for preferred rank
- title
- author name string

So, how do I get rid of these errors? I just want to say in the structured data that it's copyrighted CC-BY-SA-4.0, but this is super confusing. Amberkitten (talk) 17:22, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Amberkitten: my own suggestion to minimize frustration here: just delete the SDC you tried to create for copyright, and let the bot do it. Those "missing SDC" categories are mainly for the benefit of a bot. Yes, there would be ways to work through this by hand, but I see no good reason for a human to take time for what a bot does well. - Jmabel ! talk 17:41, 24 February 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks. Someone fixed this for me already but next time I'll just leave it be. Amberkitten (talk) 01:14, 25 February 2026 (UTC)

Saiō and copyright
[edit]I emailed Meiwa City and asked for permission to use drawings on their website of the saiō's. I am allowed under the notion that it's only used in Wikipedia. How do I:
A. Find the appropriate tag. These images are allowed used in Wikipedia in high quality. Just nowhere else (I will include all the appropriate credits that they have asked for and what not when uploading).
B. Verify that I have permission. Is there an email I can forward the one I got to prove that I have the needed permissions to upload these? Camillz (talk) 16:00, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Camillz Unfortunately, we cannot allow images only for use on Wikipedia. All images here need to be free to use by anyone, for any purpose, anywhere. Creative Commons licenses are the easiest way to do that here. If they are not willing to release their work under such terms, they cannot be hosted on Commons. You can upload them as fair use on a Wikipedia that allows them, the enwiki policy is at en:WP:F. HurricaneZetaC 16:04, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
- Could I upload the images under a non-free use license? So they can be used on the article related to the specific saiō? Camillz (talk) 17:42, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
- I'm not familiar with them, but if they follow the policy, you can upload them locally (not on Commons) using en:WP:File upload wizard. HurricaneZetaC 17:50, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
- Before I do anything I'll explain better. The saiō were Japanese princesses chosen to be the priestesses of Ise Jingū shrine. The role ceased to exist in the 13th century. Very few have depictions, hence why I wanted to find some and upload . Camillz (talk) 18:21, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Camillz: Are these centuries-old drawings? If so, and if we are talking about simple, straight-on photos/scans of 2-dimensional objects (the drawings) then they are simply in the public domain and you don't need anyone's permissions. - Jmabel ! talk 02:20, 27 February 2026 (UTC)
- If you gave a link to examples of those "drawings on their website", it would help to know what they are. The website of town.meiwa seems to have recent modern illustrations imagining the saiō. -- Asclepias (talk) 04:46, 27 February 2026 (UTC)

I recently created a vector image File:Colour 18-col PT with labels.svg by hand, but what you'll notice is that the texts "La to Yb" and "Ac to No" is a bit too high. How does uploading photos from Ebay work?
[edit]I often find that publicity photos or black and white photos of celebrities are frequently uploaded from Ebay and I was wondering how does that work? Do I need to purchase these pictures or if a picture is from a certain year and before it's fair to upload without buying the photo? I'm asking because I'd really like to see these two (if possible) images of Sondra Lee Image 1 and Image 2 uploaded to Commons. Just generally curious how EBay photos work and if it's similar to uploading pics from Flickr so to speak. Sorry if it's a dumb question :) TDKR Chicago 101 (talk) 18:27, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
- @TDKR Chicago 101 Have you ascertained that the eBay seller is the one who took the picture? i couldn't find it elsewhere through traditional methods, but it may have been published before offline and could be in a newspaper archive or something.
- That image isn't under a free license and is without further information, so you'd have to contact the seller or do some digging. We can only accept images which are under a free license or in the public domain (same thing goes for Flickr images - we can only accept when they're marked as under a free license and can't accept ones marked as "All rights reserved" or with CC- NC or ND licenses). HurricaneZetaC 19:28, 25 February 2026 (UTC)
- I was just looking at the first image, but for the second image it's from a store that sells these cards in mass, so they're very likely not the copyright holder of the image. There are a few situations in which images published between 1931 and 1989 can be public domain due to not complying with required formalities, and these are listed in the COM:Hirtle chart. I am participating in Wiki Loves Folklore 2026 and uploading my own original audio interviews, photographs, and video recordings.
My upload rights were automatically disabled after multiple audio uploads. These are original field recordings with permission from participants and no copyrighted material.

- @Fireside Talk: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/192 by trying to upload an mp3 file with insufficient rights. Too many people try to upload audio files that are still copyrighted by the authors, performers, recorders, publishing companies, etc. without proper licenses from those people. Please document fully the sources and licenses of your audio uploads, and request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to upload mp3 files. In the meantime, please reencode that and other audio into Vorbis or Opus and upload them with full documentation as .ogg files. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:25, 26 February 2026 (UTC)

Advice/Help with Category Creation for Newcomer
[edit]My apologies if this is not the place for this, or if it's so broad and dumb that it's clear I shouldn't be here. I also apologize if I over-explain myself, I do so to try and prevent possible suggestions I have already tried, and any later frustration I have trying to re-explain myself. I am doing my best and do not mean to clog up the feed.
I am trying to make my first category, which I have decided will be Category:Martadoris. It will be filed under Category:Nembrothinae. I know it is very important that I do this correctly, but there is so much data on taxon pages that it makes me think there might be semi-automated ways to create or format them. I'm trying to figure out if I need to enter all of this information by hand (which I might be able to do by comparing source code from other genuses and adjusting for Martadoris, but that whole idea seems like a red flag), and there seems to be so much data in other genus pages that I don't even know where the data comes from and what to include and. It's A Lot. Category:Nembrothinae
I am brand new to wikimedia and do not have technical experience of any kind. I have combed through the help pages best I could, and most of it is irrelevant to what I need to do, and the rest is so incomprehensible to me that I cannot even tell if it's useful or not. I cannot even figure out what templates are, I get caught in a tutorial link loop that doesn't seem to lead to anywhere.
I know I could create discussions on relevant pages that need new categories, but I really have a to-do list a mile long and it's no good making some other poor editor do all the work. Besides, I'm the one who has spent hundreds of edits resorting nudibranch photos according to their corrected species ID, I have a passion for sorting and for correcting misinformation and it will really benefit everyone if I figure out how to do this myself.
Um. So all that to say. Any advice/guidance/links/tutorials/anything pertaining to the creation of taxon categories? If there's a tutorial just for this I've fully missed it. Thank you for your patience. Snapplejackalope (talk) 17:14, 27 February 2026 (UTC)
- @Snapplejackalope: I doubt there really is a manual on this, beyond the fact that probably each of the templates involved is documented on its template page. I've done a few taxonomy categories; I've done it mostly by imitating what I saw on other such categories. A lot of what you need (tracing up the taxonomic hierarchy) you can got from Category:Nembrothinae or (better yet) any of its subcats
- By far the trickiest part of this is the "interwiki" linking, because that is done on a different wiki, Wikidata. In this case I found that there already is a relevant Wikidata item (Martadoris (Q56279545)), so I am taking the first few steps for you, because they are the least intuitive.
- Create a very stripped-down Category:Martadoris: [3]
- Link that from Wikidata: [4]
- I'm guessing you can take it from there. - Jmabel ! talk 19:46, 27 February 2026 (UTC)
- You are an absolute saint. I still have no idea how you did that, but I'm very grateful. Snapplejackalope (talk) 00:00, 1 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Snapplejackalope: if you tell me what remains unclear even retrospectively about how I did any of these steps, feel free to ask (including a bit less publicly on my user talk page). - Jmabel ! talk 03:22, 1 March 2026 (UTC)

Torrrenr (talk) 14:37, 28 February 2026 (UTC)
- I translated your text (with help by ChatGPT): "Lieutenant Nasukhov Madrit Ramazanovich, born in 1995 in the village of Ikhrek, Rutulsky District, Dagestan. From childhood, he dreamed of becoming a military officer and, following a family tradition, joined military service. Nasukhov was passionate about sports from an early age, actively engaged in football and freestyle wrestling, and also showed interest in literature, preferring poetry and detective novels.
- In 2017, he was drafted into service in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. He immediately liked military life, and after several months of service he signed a contract with the 205th Separate Motorized Rifle Cossack Brigade. In 2020, Nasukhov continued his service in the 30th Engineer-Sapper Regiment of the 6th Combined Arms Red Banner Army, where he began his career as a junior sergeant and was later promoted to sergeant.
- During his participation in the special military operation (SMO), he sustained a serious injury, after which he was promoted to junior lieutenant. Nasukhov emphasized that for him military service is not just a duty but a way to demonstrate dedication to his profession in practice. He noted the importance of compulsory military service for every man, stressing that it develops qualities such as purposefulness, resilience, endurance, and discipline.
- While participating in the SMO, Nasukhov trained new recruits, provided humanitarian aid to civilians, and carried out mine clearance operations to ensure safety for the civilian population. For his demonstrated heroism, Junior Lieutenant Nasukhov was awarded the Order of Courage and the Medal “For Combat Distinction.” Despite the injury he sustained, he continues to actively participate in military activities and plans further professional development. Nasukhov speaks with respect about the contribution of сапper units to ensuring safety both in peacetime and in combat conditions.".

project scope: how much photoshopping is too much?
[edit]I was thinking about this upload of mine and its heavy use of photoshop, and start contemplating on the issue of "where does the educational value of post processing end and artistic styling start".
Specifically, would the image be more informative in its less processed / stylized form, when it better resembles what one would see the scene with their eyes? Or would it not matter, or would it be better to upload photoshopped forms along side original file so to give other editors the choice? IrisChronomia (talk) 14:42, 28 February 2026 (UTC)
- @IrisChronomia: There are several valid approaches to this.
- My usual approach: upload the unretouched image first, then overwrite it. A couple of examples of that uploaded within the last 24 hours: File:Geneva, NY - Lynch Brother’s Building 01.jpg, File:Geneva, NY - YMCA 01.jpg.
- If the nature of the retouching might be less obvious, I explain with {{Retouched}}: File:Seattle - Gas Works Park from the water, early evening - 2025-07-09 - 01.jpg.
- Another example, where I thought someone might consider my retouching too "undocumentary", so I made both versions available under different filenames: File:Maryhill Museum - Rodin - Fallen Caryatid Bearing Her Stone (c. 1881) - 03 - cropped, retouched.jpg and the (linked) other version.
- My usual approach: upload the unretouched image first, then overwrite it. A couple of examples of that uploaded within the last 24 hours: File:Geneva, NY - Lynch Brother’s Building 01.jpg, File:Geneva, NY - YMCA 01.jpg.
- I'm sure there are other equally valid ways to do this. - Jmabel ! talk 22:10, 28 February 2026 (UTC)
- Thanks for the advice! I'm also thinking about uploading both RAW/original files along side edited ones; thanks for telling me that it's okay and is not an extravagent use of WMF servers' storage spaces. :) IrisChronomia (talk) 03:50, 1 March 2026 (UTC)

remove photos
[edit]Dear Team,
I need two photos removed/deleted, please as they are probably not free. I cannot enter at all times, only when the library is open + the artist of the statue has not died 70 years ago.
1. Herman Kesten Statue + 2. Herman Kesten Café outside. Both uploaded today by Chhelp.

- Per a previous exchange on DE-WP: Commons:Deletion requests/File:Hermann Kesten Statue im Hof des Herrmann Kesten Café der Stadtbibliothek Nürnberg.jpg; but I would still defend my opinion that File:Hermann Kesten Café Hof.jpg is fine on copyrights. That could only be a case of COM:CSD#G7. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 23:00, 28 February 2026 (UTC)
- Dear everybody,
- I am the photographer and would be happy for the two photos (Herman Kesten Statue + Herman Kesten café outside - but first one has to enter the library when it is open to get there) to be removed/deleted as I do not want to pay any fines.
- Thank you for your understanding Chhelp (talk) 23:07, 28 February 2026 (UTC)

Subject: Help with my account (Ali Boubacar)
[edit]Hello. I am Ali Boubacar.
My account was unblocked by Yann on February 6, 2026, but I have a problem: I cannot log in. I do not have access to the email address for that account and I don't remember which one it was.
I want to make sure I follow all the rules and don't make any mistakes.
- Can you help me get back into my old account without the email?
- Or, should I just create a new account and link it to this discussion so everyone knows it is me?
I want to do this the right way so there is no more confusion. What should I do?

I cannot use the Password Reset because I do not have access to the email address anymore. I really want to use my original account instead of a new one. Is there any other way to prove my identity to you so I can get back in? Thank you for your patience. ~2026-99879-2 (talk) 19:03, 1 March 2026 (UTC)

- I am writing to clarify everything so there is no more confusion. I did not personally create the account User:ALi BOUBACAR or the email attached to it; it was set up by others who were trying to help me. This is why I do not have the password or email access.I have now taken full control of my presence here and I have strictly ordered everyone else to stop. I want to use this specific account because Yann unblocked it on February 6, 2026, after reviewing my case.My only goal is to follow the rules and contribute correctly as I promised. I am asking for your help to gain access to this one account so I can manage it personally and ensure no more mistakes are made. Please check my Talk Page to see that I have permission from Yann to be here. Thank you. ~2026-99879-2 (talk) 02:12, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
- @~2026-99879-2: Please don't start a new discussion thread each time you want to post about this. The best advice anyone can give you is to read COM:UNBLOCK. If after doing so you still want to request your account be unblocked, you should do so on the user talk page of the blocked account. Posting that you want to be unblocked here is not going to get you anywhere. Please understand, though, accounts blocked for sock puppetry are almost never unblocked except when a Commons administrator really feels there's pretty much no chance of the same behavior being repeated and only usually only after six months or so has passed since the account was blocked. Moreover, if you don't have password access or the ability to reset your account's password by email to the blocked account, there's really no way for Commons to give that to you. You most likely will just need to create a new account and use that instead. You can, if you want, post something on your new account's user talk page connecting the accounts and explaining that you were unable to access the old one. Finally, please understand that blocks and conditions for being unblocked apply to you as a user regardless of which account you use to edit Commons. So, if you're successful in being unblocked but repeat the same behavior as before, you're likely going to end up blocked again without any warning. So, I strongly suggest you make the password of any new account you create is secure and nobody else can access the account. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:37, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you, Marchjuly. I really appreciate this clear advice. I want to explain that the reason I sent so many emails and posted on my Talk Page was because I was waiting to hear exactly what you just told me. I was afraid that if I created a new account without permission, it would be seen as another mistake.
- Now that I have your guidance, I will stop sending messages here and go create one new official account that I will control personally. Once it is created, I will post a note on my old Talk Page to explain the transition. Thank you for helping me do this the right way.
- ~2026-99879-2 (talk) 03:57, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
- I have now created this account, ABB-NE, as my one official account. I am now in full control of my presence here and will follow all rules. Thank you for the guidance.
- ~2026-99879-2 (talk) 04:36, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
- @ABB-NE: You still need to get unblocked, though, before taking any other activity here. Uploading or editing content will be seen as block evasion. I suggest that you use this new account to ask at User talk:ALi BOUBACAR to be unblocked. It is unusual (to say the least) to set up a new account while blocked, but in the circumstances I can see how it could be reasonable. Feel free to name and quote me on that when requesting an unblock. ALSO: be aware the Commons is not intended for self-promotion. If someone determines that it would be appropriate to remove the block and consider this a valid new single account, rather than block evasion, do not go back to posting files about yourself or you will certainly be blocked again. - Jmabel ! talk 07:02, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
- @ABB-NE: From what was posted on your user talk page, I was assuming that your other account had been unblocked because Yann approved your unblock request and you just lost access to it. Your old account still appears to be under the same blocked applied by the The Squirrel Conspiracy back in December 2026. I'm not a Commons administrator and might've given you bad advice about creating a new account. Anyway, I've asked the blocking admin to take a look at this discussion, and perhaps they will clarify what if anything else you might need to do. For the time being, it might be a good idea to do as Jmabel (who is a Commons administrator) suggests and refrain from any activity with your new account until your old one can be sorted out. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:09, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
- To the Administrators: I am very frustrated because I have been trying to follow the rules for a month. I sent my National ID card and my explanation by email 30 days ago, but no one replied.
- I only created this new account (ABB-NE) because I was told to on this Help Desk. I thought that person was a Minister (Administrator). If I had known they were not, I would have continued to wait for you.
- I am not trying to hide or create 'socks.' I am the real Ali Boubacar, and I have already proven it in the emails you have. Please check the email system (VRT) for my ID and help me settle this once and for all. ABB-NE (talk) 12:30, 2 March 2026 (UTC)

My file ends with .doc
[edit]My file ends with .doc. What should I do ? Pablo Kirtchuk (talk) 15:48, 1 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Pablo Kirtchuk: Please see COM:FT#Nonfree file formats specifically. Also, I regret to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/281. Please read Mediawiki:Abusefilter-disallowed-pdf-new-user-upload again. You are not yet autoconfirmed, which is granted automatically to accounts that are at least 4 days old. I recommend just simply waiting out those 4 days to be able to upload PDFs. You may upload any image(s) here and make a draft article with transcribed wikitext on Wikipedia, if in compliance. Now, given the name in the filename, you may also want to read COM:NOT. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 16:04, 1 March 2026 (UTC)
- Possibly more to the point: almost no self-created DOC file would have content that belongs on this site. - Jmabel ! talk 06:54, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
NataEm1942 (talk) 19:52, 1 March 2026 (UTC)
- You wrote (translated with ChatGPT), "Hello. My husband, Yuri Vasilyevich Yemelyanov, a historian who has an article on Wikipedia, passed away on January 16. I would very much like to replace his photograph, because the current one does not reflect his true character (incidentally, I myself uploaded it during his lifetime). I managed to do this in the English-language Wikipedia, but in the Russian-language version I cannot succeed. Please help.
- Respectfully,
- Natalia Mikhailovna Yemelyanova, widow of Yuri Vasilyevich."
- It is strange that you cannot change it on Russian Wikipedia. Can you explain more? Or you can visit [6].
Kaap bij Sneeuw (talk) 22:31, 1 March 2026 (UTC)
- NataliyaEm is also her.
I nominated File:Юрий Емельянов.jpg for deletion because it's sus. She also uploaded File:Yury Emelyanov.jpg which was deleted as copyvio. I asked at w:ru:Википедия:Форум/Общий#Yury Yemelyanov for someone to help her. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 00:09, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
I wanted to upload a photo of the person who i know
[edit]I recently visited the wikipedia and there i saw some of the peoples images are missing and i have got there photo clicked by my own phone in my device so i just wanted to upload it, i also mentioned the date and the place where that photo was clicked also you may cross-check me if you dont believe . i have got enough information abt the image i was trying to upload . So the problem is wikipedia didnt allow me to upload a image so how can i get the access for that or what shall i do cause i just wanna help . Prekshaaa (talk) 19:26, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Prekshaaa You have hit filter 335, which blocks uploading images from Wikipedia (this is Wikimedia Commons, a different site) until you are autoconfirmed. To upload the image go through Special:UploadWizard. HurricaneZetaC 19:30, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
- In other words, nothing necessarily wrong with what you tried to upload, just how. Use Special:UploadWizard. - Jmabel ! talk 20:18, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
OioioiW! (talk) 20:26, 2 March 2026 (UTC)
- Is this about File:Portraet Claudio Hils Ausstellung "heimatfront. Bühnenbilder des Krieges", Artist Claudio Hils, Kunstmuseum Thurgau 2021.jpg or something else? (Please, when referring to a specific file, link it; don't make other people have to search it out and guess if they have understood correctly.) That file has an open DR, and would better be discussed in the DR than here on the help desk. Looking at the photo, it seems unlikely that Hils himself took it, and you claimed when uploading it that you took it yourself. - Jmabel ! talk 06:28, 3 March 2026 (UTC)

can I post a screen recording
[edit]can I? Jlangstonjjj (talk) 19:37, 3 March 2026 (UTC)
- It depends, there aren't much use cases for screenshots to become necessary. If your screen is displaying copyrighted material, then no. If the media is text, then no (-> COM:SCOPE). If you're displaying an old painting, then no, it's better to use the original file. To sum up: don't do it. Regards, Grand-Duc (talk) 19:44, 3 March 2026 (UTC)
Image uploaded with no information
[edit]Hi all,
this file was uploaded 4 days ago but contains no description or context. TinEye didn't return a match (that would at least support the statement that it's the uploader's own work). I pinged the uploader on the file's talk page. Supposing they don't answer, is this eligible for deletion due to lack of information? If so, how long should I wait? Barbalalaika (talk) 22:26, 3 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Barbalalaika: Hi, No, it is not eligible for deletion just for missing a good description, if it is really the freely licensed work of the uploader and it is in scope. For now, it could be categorized at least, with some other files, in a Category:Perna cabeluda to be created. -- Asclepias (talk) 22:57, 3 March 2026 (UTC)
uploading a new version of the file
[edit]Hello, I can't upload a new version of this file: "OrthodoxyInEurope.png". Can you help me? The photo shows that Orthodoxy is widespread in western Kazakhstan. However, this is not the case. According to the 2021 census. Islam is the majority religion in that region. Arnur.sarybai (talk) 08:49, 4 March 2026 (UTC)
- Hello @Arnur.sarybai, you need to be autopatrolled to overwrite another user's files. Please see Commons:FAQ#How can I upload a new version of a file?. Thanks. Tvpuppy (talk) 12:25, 4 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Arnur.sarybai: I'd be very wary of that change. Eastern Orthodoxy in Kazakhstan suggest that somewhere between 17 and 24% if the population of Kazakhstan is Orthodox Christian. That is certainly "widespread." - Jmabel ! talk 20:02, 4 March 2026 (UTC)
image size for uploading
[edit]what is the iomage size required for uploading Sanjay jain (9415019935) (talk) 14:29, 4 March 2026 (UTC)
- For most photos, when practical upload the highest resolution. (Size displayed in articles can be set with the "thumb" setting, regardless of size of the original image.). Does that answer your question? -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 15:30, 4 March 2026 (UTC)

Can I use a photo that is present on Wikipedia for another page?
[edit]I want to use the Austrian Flag to edit a page, and I want to use the Austrian flag I found on Wikipedia. Is this alright or is it copyrighted? EgeA3435 (talk) 16:31, 4 March 2026 (UTC)
- The flag of Austria is not copyrighted. You cannot copyright three simple parallel stripes. - Jmabel ! talk 20:37, 4 March 2026 (UTC)
- @EgeA3435: File:Flag of Austria.svg would be the one to use, unless you want something else from Category:National flag of Austria. Instructions on how to use it are at en:H:PIC. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 21:34, 4 March 2026 (UTC)
Dirk Liesch (talk) 17:19, 4 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Dirk Liesch: Vielleicht https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Common_thumbnail_sizes#FAQ?
NataEm1942 (talk) 21:11, 4 March 2026 (UTC)
Hello.
Currently, the page "Yuri Yemelyanov, historian" has two photos (the old one, at the top) and a new one (at the bottom). How can I delete the top one and replace it with the bottom one?- @NataEm1942: Здравствуйте и добро пожаловать. Похоже, речь идёт о ru:Емельянов, Юрий Васильевич. Верхнее фото взято из d:Q21639275, для его изменения потребуется согласие на Wikidata.
- Hi, and welcome. This appears to be about ru:Емельянов, Юрий Васильевич. The top photo is coming from d:Q21639275, you will need consensus on Wikidata to change it. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 21:46, 4 March 2026 (UTC)
