It’s not just that we’ve been conditioned to think clothes should be cheap, but because those prices are everywhere. The race to the bottom has ruined our perception of value. We have no idea what our clothes should cost. And most people don’t care about it. The price tag is only possible because someone, somewhere, is vulnerable enough to need to work for next to nothing. Recent news are linking the budget fashion giant Bohoo to claims „modern slavery“ in one of Leicester’s garment factories. The conditions found in the UK are endemic to the industry globally. The price for raw material is set at market rates. Labour costs are not. Subcontracting is part of the problem: it provides cheap labour that can be hidden away. The pricing structure is built on what the brand wants a garment to cost on the website, not on what the garment actually costs in terms of materials and labour. ▶️ If you knew exactly why that T-shirt costs $3, I think you’d be happy to put it back on the hanger. Full transparency is the only look to be wearing. #BeyondSustainableFashion

The bank has signed a long-term lease for a purpose-built campus in Baar, canton Zug. It opens in 2030. More than 1,500 employees, currently spread across seven buildings in Zurich, will move under one roof. The executive board and management will relocate too. Vontobel's existing site on Bleicherweg in Zurich isn't going away. It will become a client-facing hub for more than 300 staff. A private restaurant and the bank's art collection will move there too. No jobs are being cut, and no roles are moving offshore to India or Poland, a company spokesperson said. IT infrastructure stays put. Servers will remain in Zurich's Albisrieden and Hagenholz districts. According to Vontobel, tax advantages weren't the deciding factor. Zug is still one of Switzerland's lowest-tax cantons. A century-old Zurich name, moving its center of gravity to Zug. What does that say about the city's competitiveness?

And I actually really loved this heat and I never complained that it was hot this summer, for me 35C+ it is ideal in Switzerland, but anyways. At the end of May, I started a leadership program with Epistimi.org for women in science (STEMM), using the award-winning curriculum from the MIT #LEAPS Program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. We started with a few intensive days together in Athens and then continued throughout the summer online. Every other Monday evening we met for discussions, and in between there were essays, exercises and quite a bit of personal reflection on how we lead ourselves and others : our biases, emotional intelligence, curiosity, humility, conflicts and experiences that shape the way we work with people. And now, at the end of August, quite symbolically - I have completed it. 😊 Throughout this course, I realised that leadership can take many forms: taking ownership, bringing people together, making decisions, listening, admitting your mistakes and having enough self-awareness to change your approach when needed. A meaningful way to close this summer, and definitely a learning journey I will carry with me beyond the certificate. 🚀 Thank you to everyone who was part of it! 🤍 Angeliki Rigos Isabelle Lugan and all the Epistimi girls!

Her retirement existed only through her husband's contributions: no independent claim, nothing in her own name. 1997. That's not ancient history. That's some of our mothers. For some of us, that's still how our family's pension planning actually worked. We are the first generation of women here who actually have a pension, a portfolio, money of our own to manage, independent of anyone else. That's huge. And still, most of us were raised to save it and spend it, not to invest it. Nobody handed us a manual for the second part. The part that actually costs you money💸 Saving and investing are not the same skill, and the system was never built to teach us the difference. So most of us default to what we know: a savings account, maybe a pension we've never actually looked at, because it feels safe. It isn't. Cash sitting still loses value to inflation every year, quietly, while you're not watching. Here's a place to start, today: pull up your pension statement. Just look. Is it sitting in cash, or is it invested? Most women I talk to don't know the answer, and that one detail alone can be worth tens of thousands of francs over the next 20 years.
