[pointing at a sign that says There Is No Year Zero] when calculating how many slutty slutty years historical figures from the BCE years have been dead for, you should add the year of death to the current year and then subtract one 🫵
think i did something to my thumb by. holding one (1) single issue of astronomy now magazine
when exactly did cato the younger die?
if you google something like ‘cato the younger death’ you will get the result '12th april 46 bce’. this has bugged me for YEARS because i have never been able to find a source for it. we know it was april 46 bce for reasons including that it was after the battle of thapsus on april 6th. anyway. i read plutarch’s life of cato the younger very carefully yesterday and i think the correct date is actually april 11th.
thank you so much for reviving e-pistulae. getting cicero's exile letters in real time is driving me insane already. and the footnotes and links are amazingly helpful too 👀
wahhh thank you :-)
You know the idea of history as tragedy? I admit the opposite is happening here with Cicero's exile letters because my uncharitable reaction armed with foreknowledge is often: "stop whining Marcus Tullius, you'll be back soon, this is not the end of the world. That happens later."
ohhh interesting that this assumes a key feature of tragedy is the audience knowing what is coming and the characters not knowing? like that is often the case but not necessarily i feel? but. yeah. on the other hand you can make it even more depressing by thinking wow this is awful marce tulli but it is not even the worst thing that will happen. even when he gets back from exile things will already be irreparably fucked.
also having read the 44/43 bce letters. i really do think the exile fucked him up more. or maybe he was just completely resigned by the 40s? but he definitely seems to be having a worse time now in exile than he will later. even if later will be more fatal to him. i also can’t remember if the exile grief is more or less than when tullia dies but i feel like that is the other awful low for him :(
Thucydideeznuts
beautiful and true. my greek class used to call him juicy thucy
Aside from the obvious, I also associate you with the particular internet convention of using periods (.) to mark pauses in sentences. Mainly noticed this bc like. I also do that a lot
oh that’s real. punctuation is fake and you can do whatever you want forever. mediaeval monks told me this.
