i mean can we stop with the trope of the white guy who is an entire asshole being forgiven for his sins just because he loves a woman i mean full offense but the capacity for a selfish love doesn’t in any way shape or form make someone “secretly good.” stop using women as a prop piece to humanize people, stop making the plot of a woman eventually flatten into “training montage for the soft side of a mean person” also tbh this is straight up irl a thing that happens where people are like “oh of course im not sexist! i have a wife!!!” this is bc we teach ppl that having a relationship with a minority forgives you of bias so anyway what i’m saying here is anybody can think they’re in love abusers often do think they’re in love it doesn’t make them a good person 

“You knew I was like this when you married me,” the Tragic and Misunderstood Male Protagonist says. “You leaving me is an out of the blue Betrayal!”

“I thought I could handle it,” the two-dimensional, female love interest says. She looks into the middle distance. “But, apparently, I expect you to treat me like an equal and put an equal amount of effort into this relationship as I do. I know this is Unfair to you due to your Tragic Past, but I am weak. I need more than your occasional rambling monologue about love that I am supposed to understand as a Declaration.”

“I’ve always been taciturn, blunt to the point of mean, and distant,” the Tragic and Misunderstood Male character complains. “You said you loved me anyway.”

“Well,” the two-dimensional, female love interest says, “I suppose I thought you’d put effort in? To change? Since you love me and claim you want to see me happy?”

“Change?” the Tragic and Misunderstood Male character gasps,pressing a hand to his chest. “But I’ve been made socially acceptable by your love! Why change what takes so little effort to maintain?”

“It’s actually a lot of effort for me,” she says, twisting her ring around her finger. “All of my friends hate how you talk to me, actually, and defending you to them is exhausting.”

“They don’t Understand,” he declares. He holds out a hand beseechingly to her. “But you do, right, babe?”

She takes a slow step away from him. The sun is not quite so bright now, not quite so blinding. “Actually,” she says, “I don’t.”

He blinks, hand wavering. “Babe,” he says, “are you for real? You’re leaving me? But I saved you from kidnappers last week!”

“Which I appreciate,” she says. She looks behind her to see that her cab is arriving. Finally. “But that’s not really grounds for a long term, sustainable relationship? At all? Especially when your gallantry doesn’t even extend to accompanying me to my sister’s wedding?”

“She hates me,” he complains. “You ask for Too Much.”

“Yeah,” she says. “I’m high maintenance wanting you to go to my last remaining family member’s wedding.” The cab pulls up and she makes to get in, pausing at the last moment. “You’re going to the bar tonight, right? Have fun letting all your friends call me a demanding bitch and saying nothing to defend me. Should be a normal night for you.”

“Babe,” he says, finally reaching forward. “They don’t mean anything by—“

The door slams shut before she can hear another of his Reasonable excuses.

“Women,” he mutters to a random passerby, kicking at the concrete. She’d be back sooner rather than later, he bet. They always came back for his rough, distant, Misunderstood love.
