My thoughts immediately went to all the incredibly talented people who poured their hearts and souls into the many great games BioWare created over the past 30+ years. They also went to Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, who built such an extraordinary studio, gave me my first opportunity in the industry, and contributed so much to my professional and personal growth. And, of course, they went to all my friends and former colleagues who were still there (Benoît Houle, Michael Gamble, etc.💜) , working hard on what I have no doubt would have been another amazing entry in the Mass Effect series. I know firsthand just how talented these people are, and how deeply they care about making great games for players. I sincerely hope they quickly find new opportunities to put that talent and passion to work. I know I’ll be looking forward to whatever they create next. BioWare was always somewhat at odds with the realities of operating within a publicly traded company. Its ambitious games, long development cycles, and deeply ingrained “quality first, schedule second” philosophy didn’t always fit comfortably with the pressures for predictable releases, quarterly results, and consistent growth. In that sense, EA becoming a private company might have seemed like good news. Unfortunately, given the priorities of its new owners and the significant debt taken on to finance the acquisition, I had a hard time imagining they would have much appetite for the kinds of games BioWare was known for. I certainly don’t pretend to know all the factors behind today’s decision, but it’s difficult not to see a fundamental tension between BioWare’s approach to making games and the financial realities of its new parent company. Perhaps naively, a part of me still hopes someone will find a way to bring BioWare back, reunite some of the people who made it so special, and let them delight us with their incredible games again. So many of my own gaming memories are tied to BioWare, and it’s hard to accept that the studio might never contribute to new ones. To everyone affected by today’s news, I sincerely wish you all the best. You have so much to be proud of, and I hope you know that you will always have a special place in my heart, and in the hearts of countless players around the world.

David R. reacted on thisDavid R. reacted on thisAbout a decade ago, a colleague told me, very directly, that I was too junior. I was on a red team with some world-class hackers. And when that’s the company you keep, egos come into play. We were talking about career paths when one senior said: “I’m next in line for promo. Farzan is just too junior.” I could’ve resented it. Instead, I used it as fuel. I obsessed over learning. Research. Exploitation. Leading. Speaking. Getting better. I’m incredibly proud of how far I’ve come. So don’t spend too much energy on the naysayers. Sometimes, years later, you’ll realize they did you a favor. They lit the fire.

We’ve stayed small, focused on the business, and been thoughtful about how we use our capital. It’s been pretty amazing to see how far that early support has taken us. Thanks to the team and the people who've believed in us.
