Brenon Holmes liked thisBrenon Holmes liked thisFour and a half years ago, I joined BioWare to work on Mass Effect. As a fan, that was exciting in and of itself. But as it turns out, getting to work in this universe was only part of what made it so great. I got to work with some amazing people, including industry legends, and made some great friends along the way. We were shaping the next chapter of Mass Effect. We cared so much about what made the universe special, while also exploring where we could take it next. I loved working with people across animation, narrative, and design, figuring out how to bring the pieces together into something that was authentic. I’m proud of what we were building, and it’s a shame we won’t get to finish it and share it with the fans. So, to my friends at BioWare, thank you. I’ve learned a lot, had quite a bit of fun, and really enjoyed the past four and a half years. There are some crazy talented people from this team out there right now. If you’re hiring, I hope you’ll reach out to them. As for me, I’m looking forward to catching up with old colleagues, meeting some new people, and seeing where things go from here.

There are many of my outstanding coworkers/friends who have been impacted. People I will miss seeing and talking to everyweek. People that helped me grow and develop my own skills just being so awesome. Its also a sad day for the loss of BioWare a beacon for lots of edmontonians a true canadian success story. The place that was my dream to work for growing up and motivated me to try harder. Working at BioWare for most of the last decade has been awesome experience. I was extremely excited for the next Mass effect game as it was shaping up to be an amazing project by lots of talented people - I do mourn for The Rich Stories, Unforgettable Characters, and Vast Worlds that will never be. BioWare will be missed. And lastly go hire those affected they are amazingly talented people.

BioWare the company may have closed, but the community it created will live on in the people who worked there and in the hearts of fans who our games managed to connect with. I am grateful to Ray and Greg for starting it all and for the opportunity to work alongside such a talented group of dedicated and inspiring people for the last 26 years.

Brenon Holmes reacted on thisBrenon Holmes reacted on thisI don't post much publicly, but these circumstances call for it. I've spent 19 of the last 20 years at BioWare. After Anthem, I stepped away, and the only thing that could bring me back was the call to make a Mass Effect game the way I'd always wanted to, with a team I couldn't wait to be part of. Recently, I've been more excited about my work than at any point in my career. I can't begin to describe the promise and momentum this team had built. What I'll miss most is what could have been: a game as fun to make as it was to play, and finally getting to say "yes, and..." to ideas I'd always been held back from. To the team, thank you. You made the best work of my career feel like it was only getting started, and any studio would be lucky to have you. Thank you ❤️

Brenon Holmes liked thisBioWare was where I started my full time professional career. It was a truly special time for me, moving from a TFT to an RFT in within my first 6 months, and I felt like an impostor in the midst of raw talent. When I joined the Sound Design Department, it was the best baptism by fire. We had 3 projects in the studio going at once. The team I got to learn from was world-class, and I couldn't be more grateful to have the best mentors in the industry. And I made lifelong friends from the shared experience. BioWare also gave me my first break into Design with Jeremie, Noel and Brenon taking a chance on a sound designer. Most of all, I'm heartbroken for the fans who will never get to see the work that's going into the vaults. BioWare brought a lot to this industry and weathered an ever-changing mandate over the past decade in games. I'm curious what will rise from the ashes, and what the future of narrative-driven games is in this world of short attention. Shout out to my friends who were creating something special until the very end. It's yet another heartbreaking day in games. Thank you, BioWare. #BioWare

Brenon Holmes liked thisBrenon Holmes liked thisAfter over 14 years at EA (approx. twelve with BioWare and two with Motive), I’m moving on to other things. I'll be starting a new contract in a few weeks and also have room for some additional contracts--if you need some writing or a narrative critique, please keep me in mind! I’m truly grateful to the Motive team for welcoming me on board and being fantastic, kind, and talented people to work with. I also remain grateful to all of my BioWare friends for my time there. Now, it's time for a short break before new adventures begin.

Brenon Holmes liked thisBrenon Holmes liked thisEdmonton is Canada's Festival City, and since I live here, I was interested of how income distributed among its neighborhoods. I mapped average total household income across Edmonton by adapting Census 2021 data to current neighborhoods and applying wage growth to arrive at numbers for Sept 2026. All numbers are rounded to the nearest 500 dollars. Total income means income from all sources, such as employment, investment, pensions and government programs. Here are some interesting facts: ▪️ Average gross household income is $130,000 ▪️ Average after tax household income is $109,000 Top 3 neighborhoods by average household income: ▪️ Henderson Estates $311,000 (gross) and $231,000 (after tax) ▪️ Patricia Heights $293000 (gross) and $211000 (after tax) ▪️ Westridge $293000 (gross) and $211000 (after tax) Bottom 3 neighborhoods by average household income: ▪️ Central McDougall $66,000 (gross) and $58,500 (after tax) ▪️ Boyle Street $66,000 (gross) and $58,000 (after tax) ▪️ Westwood $68,500 (gross) and $61,500 (after tax) It is interesting that households in Henderson Estates keep 74% of their income while Central McDougall keeps 87%. 🔶 Where does your neighbourhood sit? Simon Préfontaine and 11 Montreal game developers were laid off during a difficult stretch for the industry, with studio closures, scarce openings, and AI reshaping the work they do. Their colleagues marched, wore red, and pushed the employer back to the bargaining table, helping secure better severance for all 12. This GoFundMe was created to bring Montreal’s support closer to what American colleagues won through their own negotiations. The initial CAD 12,000 goal was meant to cover eight weeks of essentials like medication, bills, and utilities. It’s now surpassed that goal, with 10 participating beneficiaries receiving help based on need. 🎮 Thank you to the 52 donors who helped turn solidarity into practical support. Read the full story and share the GoFundMe page so this show of care reaches more people. #GameDevs #WorkerSolidarity https://lnkd.in/gETy-GJb

Alberta's game industry doesn't get built by accident. It gets built through community, mentorship, collaboration, and a lot of people willing to share what they've learned. I first met Cory Sellar at the Edmonton Screen Industries Office wrap-up party last year. Since then, I've become a big fan of the Good Game Edmonton podcast. Cory has a knack for bringing together thoughtful guests and digging into the real stories behind game development careers, studios, successes, and setbacks. That's why I'm especially excited to join Cory Stellar and other Guest Speakers for the fireside chat at NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology) as part of Edmonton Startup Week. Edmonton Unlimited We'll be talking about what it actually takes to build games in Alberta, how newcomers can break into the industry, what opportunities exist here, and why I believe the future of game development in this province is incredibly bright. Whether you're a student, developer, founder, educator, or simply curious about the industry, we'd love to have you join us. 🎟️ Free registration: Reserve your spot https://luma.com/q0ae9zrw #GameDevYEG #DevYEG #AlbertaGames #GameDev #IndieGames #GameIndustry #EdmontonStartupWeek #NAIT #MadeInAlberta #YEG #TechCommunity
