Brenon Holmes liked thisBrenon Holmes liked thisFour and a half years ago, I joined BioWare to work on Mass Effect. As a fan, that was exciting in and of itself. But as it turns out, getting to work in this universe was only part of what made it so great. I got to work with some amazing people, including industry legends, and made some great friends along the way. We were shaping the next chapter of Mass Effect. We cared so much about what made the universe special, while also exploring where we could take it next. I loved working with people across animation, narrative, and design, figuring out how to bring the pieces together into something that was authentic. I’m proud of what we were building, and it’s a shame we won’t get to finish it and share it with the fans. So, to my friends at BioWare, thank you. I’ve learned a lot, had quite a bit of fun, and really enjoyed the past four and a half years. There are some crazy talented people from this team out there right now. If you’re hiring, I hope you’ll reach out to them. As for me, I’m looking forward to catching up with old colleagues, meeting some new people, and seeing where things go from here.

Brenon Holmes reacted on thisBrenon Holmes reacted on thisI Don't post a lot - But I was not currently impacted by the closure of BioWare and the Edmonton office, but I am still extremely devastated. There are many of my outstanding coworkers/friends who have been impacted. People I will miss seeing and talking to everyweek. People that helped me grow and develop my own skills just being so awesome. Its also a sad day for the loss of BioWare a beacon for lots of edmontonians a true canadian success story. The place that was my dream to work for growing up and motivated me to try harder. Working at BioWare for most of the last decade has been awesome experience. I was extremely excited for the next Mass effect game as it was shaping up to be an amazing project by lots of talented people - I do mourn for The Rich Stories, Unforgettable Characters, and Vast Worlds that will never be. BioWare will be missed. And lastly go hire those affected they are amazingly talented people.

Brenon Holmes reacted on thisBrenon Holmes reacted on thisIt has been heartening to see the outpouring of support for BioWare over the last few days. BioWare the company may have closed, but the community it created will live on in the people who worked there and in the hearts of fans who our games managed to connect with. I am grateful to Ray and Greg for starting it all and for the opportunity to work alongside such a talented group of dedicated and inspiring people for the last 26 years.

Brenon Holmes reacted on thisBrenon Holmes reacted on thisI don't post much publicly, but these circumstances call for it. I've spent 19 of the last 20 years at BioWare. After Anthem, I stepped away, and the only thing that could bring me back was the call to make a Mass Effect game the way I'd always wanted to, with a team I couldn't wait to be part of. Recently, I've been more excited about my work than at any point in my career. I can't begin to describe the promise and momentum this team had built. What I'll miss most is what could have been: a game as fun to make as it was to play, and finally getting to say "yes, and..." to ideas I'd always been held back from. To the team, thank you. You made the best work of my career feel like it was only getting started, and any studio would be lucky to have you. Thank you ❤️

Brenon Holmes liked thisBioWare was where I started my full time professional career. It was a truly special time for me, moving from a TFT to an RFT in within my first 6 months, and I felt like an impostor in the midst of raw talent. When I joined the Sound Design Department, it was the best baptism by fire. We had 3 projects in the studio going at once. The team I got to learn from was world-class, and I couldn't be more grateful to have the best mentors in the industry. And I made lifelong friends from the shared experience. BioWare also gave me my first break into Design with Jeremie, Noel and Brenon taking a chance on a sound designer. Most of all, I'm heartbroken for the fans who will never get to see the work that's going into the vaults. BioWare brought a lot to this industry and weathered an ever-changing mandate over the past decade in games. I'm curious what will rise from the ashes, and what the future of narrative-driven games is in this world of short attention. Shout out to my friends who were creating something special until the very end. It's yet another heartbreaking day in games. Thank you, BioWare. #BioWare

Brenon Holmes liked thisBrenon Holmes liked thisAfter over 14 years at EA (approx. twelve with BioWare and two with Motive), I’m moving on to other things. I'll be starting a new contract in a few weeks and also have room for some additional contracts--if you need some writing or a narrative critique, please keep me in mind! I’m truly grateful to the Motive team for welcoming me on board and being fantastic, kind, and talented people to work with. I also remain grateful to all of my BioWare friends for my time there. Now, it's time for a short break before new adventures begin.

Brenon Holmes liked thisBrenon Holmes liked thisEdmonton is Canada's Festival City, and since I live here, I was interested of how income distributed among its neighborhoods. I mapped average total household income across Edmonton by adapting Census 2021 data to current neighborhoods and applying wage growth to arrive at numbers for Sept 2026. All numbers are rounded to the nearest 500 dollars. Total income means income from all sources, such as employment, investment, pensions and government programs. Here are some interesting facts: ▪️ Average gross household income is $130,000 ▪️ Average after tax household income is $109,000 Top 3 neighborhoods by average household income: ▪️ Henderson Estates $311,000 (gross) and $231,000 (after tax) ▪️ Patricia Heights $293000 (gross) and $211000 (after tax) ▪️ Westridge $293000 (gross) and $211000 (after tax) Bottom 3 neighborhoods by average household income: ▪️ Central McDougall $66,000 (gross) and $58,500 (after tax) ▪️ Boyle Street $66,000 (gross) and $58,000 (after tax) ▪️ Westwood $68,500 (gross) and $61,500 (after tax) It is interesting that households in Henderson Estates keep 74% of their income while Central McDougall keeps 87%. 🔶 Where does your neighbourhood sit? End of an era. Sad for #yeg tech/game dev community to see this once 'crown jewel of gaming' shuttered. "The news comes after several years of turbulence for both EA and BioWare. In August, EA went private after a $55-billion USD ($77 billion CAD) leveraged buyout. BioWare, founded in 1995, has slowly dwindled from the height of its success, when it boasted more than 400 employees. Prior to shutting down, it had around 100...The closure of BioWare, once one of the Canadian gaming industry’s crown jewel studios, is another signal of the dire straits the industry is in." https://lnkd.in/gMZrWwzj

Hey #YEG #GameDevs! I was supposed to partake in a panel for #EdmontonPublicSchools at their annual student AI conference in a panel around AI in Video Game Development on April 29th with two other talented devs, but I’m unable to go now as I’m being sent to #GamescomLATAM over the same period. I’m hoping to help find a replacement for myself at the talk. If any of my fellow Edmonton-based devs would be comfortable participating in the panel (regardless of your views on AI in the workplace, positive or negative) please reach out to me and I’d be happy to connect you with the organizer. This is a great chance to interact with the next generation of prospective game devs and talk shop and talk where you hope and think the industry is going!

The Calgary Games Kiln invites the Calgary game development community its first community plenary session! For aspiring, emerging and established developers, students, hobbyists, and enthusiasts alike; join us on Monday, November 17th at 5:30pm at Platform Calgary (East Annex) for our first guest speaker – Jason Della Rocca. In the first of these plenaries, Jason Della Rocca will talk about new timelines for success in the indie game ecosystem. Specifically: what is the most obvious and direct path to success for game developers today? There is always too much work to do, too many demands on our time as smaller indie teams. How do we even prioritize and optimize for the greatest chance of success? This session will reveal the most direct path and approach for succeeding in today's hyper competitive game market. This session is part of the Calgary Games Kiln program, a proof-of-concept initiative powered by Calgary Economic Development. The incubator-style program currently supports five Calgary-based, early-stage game developers, with a focus on market validation and commercial viability. Importantly, the Kiln also aims to support the Calgary games ecosystem by way of plenary activities extended to non-program participants. We'd also like to thank Nordicity and Digital Alberta for helping bring these events to our vibrant games ecosystem here in YYC.

Sad to hear about this and all of the employees affected in Edmonton. Article below: A deep loss: Edmonton-based video game company BioWare shutting down BioWare, the Edmonton-based video game company behind popular titles such as Mass Effect and Dragon Age, is shutting down. In a social media post on Wednesday, BioWare said that after three decades of working in the video game industry, it will be closing and development on its next Mass Effect game will end. “What generations of BioWare built together is something to celebrate and remember,” the statement reads. “These games became so much more because you played them, debated your choices, fell in love with the characters, and made these worlds your own.”

The next Mass Effect game won’t make it out of BioWare. Development on the game is stopping as the Edmonton studio shuts down. The closure is a particularly stark ending for a company that helped turn Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Baldur’s Gate into globally recognized franchises (and put Canada's gaming industry on the map as it did). #CDNTech #Gaming

Like the rest of the games industry, we have also been shaken by the news of BioWare's closure. We are saddened by the loss of BioWare as a pillar of our game development ecosystem, and grieve for the impact this closure has on the wonderfully talented team who was working on the next installment of Mass Effect. Consequently, while we acknowledge that while the loss of a AAA studio is indeed unfortunate, we would like surface the very real human impact of BioWare's closure. Edmonton and Alberta have incredible talent, and as job losses from layoffs and studio closures continue to mount, we risk losing a generation of veterans whose knowledge and capabilities could be the foundation for incredible ideas, products, and intellectual property that come from our region. This is a wake up call: if our creative industry is to have relevance on the global stage, and if we want the outputs of our creative work to have a positive economic and cultural impact on our region, we need to build supports that are sustainable and resilient. We need an industry that puts human-beings and Canadian/Albertan-owned IP first. BioWare's closure has not been the only headwind that our region's game developers have faced. From 2022-2026, the games industry ecosystem--Alberta included--has been rocked by changing conditions that threaten the viability of old-school business models. The unfortunate thing is that the big, multinational corporations will continue to exist; those who suffer are the talented creatives who are laid off in droves. More than ever, let's find ways to support the people who make up our creative industries. Whether that's transitioning to indie, to another studio, or to a new career, we should be resourcing interventions that ensure Alberta retains the creative and technical talent who have built world-renowned games, experienced by millions of fans across the world. Alberta can be one of the best places in the world to make games; let's make it happen together. Also all of those impacted by layoffs can attend GDX for free. In January, Ubisoft laid off the entirety of its Halifax studio, just weeks after staff unionized with 74 percent support. As Isaac Peltz reports, the move raises urgent questions about union power and corporate accountability in Canada’s gaming sector. https://lnkd.in/gwV-VAv5

Edmonton’s BioWare is shutting down after more than three decades, ending a chapter for one of Canada’s best-known game studios. The developer behind Baldur’s Gate, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect announced that work on its next Mass Effect game will also stop. The closure follows parent company Electronic Arts (EA)’ decision to cut staff and close the studio. EA acquired BioWare in 2007. Founded in 1995, BioWare helped establish Canada’s reputation for ambitious, story-driven games. Its shutdown adds to a difficult period for the domestic gaming industry, following Ubisoft’s closures of its Winnipeg and Halifax studios and the resulting job losses. https://lnkd.in/gKySSayG

Alberta’s video game industry continues to level up. 🎮 From established studios to the next generation of independent developers, Alberta is home to a growing community of creators building original games and helping strengthen Canada’s position as a global leader in video game development. It’s great to see this momentum highlighted by CTV News, showcasing the talent, innovation, and creativity driving the province’s video game ecosystem.
