South Africa’s steel industry is under pressure. Production has declined by 24% over the past decade, driven by aging infrastructure, rising energy costs, and global competition. But there’s a path forward. In our new blog, Khanyisani Makhanya, Consultant in Hatch’s Advisory practice, and Lana Van Wyk, Advisory Principal, explore how scrap-based electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking can help decarbonize the sector, create jobs, and strengthen local value chains. Every 1,000 tons of locally produced steel contributes R9.2 million to GDP and supports six jobs. The opportunity is clear. Read the full blog to learn how South Africa can lead the transition to a cleaner, more competitive steel industry: https://lnkd.in/gXhQNYc4 #GreenSteel #Steelmaking #SouthAfrica #Decarbonization #CircularEconomy #HatchAdvisory

The US$3.1 billion expansion of the Alumar alumina refinery in São Luís, Brazil, doubled the refinery’s production capacity while setting new benchmarks in safety and technological innovation. This massive effort saw the facility’s output grow from 1.75 to 3.5 million tonnes per annum and pushed the boundaries of what is possible in industrial projects. Tasked with managing engineering, procurement, and construction management, a team of 600 experts across seven global Hatch offices worked together to harness 3D modeling and ensure precision in the design and construction phases. The technology allowed for better visualization and coordination of the 80,000 cubic meters of concrete, 27,000 tonnes of steel, 240,000 meters of piping, and 3.5 million meters of cable that were used in the project. The project’s social and economic impacts were also significant, providing jobs for 13,000 people, with 70% hailing from the local Maranhão region, injecting economic vitality into the area.
