🧠 300GB Exfiltrated: Hard Lessons from the youX / FulcrumSec Breach The recent data extortion of Australian FinTech platform youX by FulcrumSec (also known as "The Threat Thespians") provides a masterclass in why basic cyber hygiene is non-negotiable. With over 444,000 borrowers and 800 broker organizations impacted, here are 4 critical lessons for every security leader: 🚫 Kill Static Credentials: The attackers reportedly exploited active MongoDB Atlas credentials from 2021. Organizations must automate rotations and scan for "secret sprawl" to eliminate stale keys. ✨ Modernize Your Hashing: Over 8,000 broker password hashes were exposed using MD5—an algorithm easily cracked by consumer-grade hardware. Transition to robust algorithms like Argon2 or bcrypt and mandate phishing-resistant MFA. 🩹 Move Beyond "Band-Aid" Fixes: Vulnerabilities were flagged by researchers in March 2025, but only superficial fixes were applied, leaving systemic issues open. Addressing root policy failures is the only way to prevent repeat incidents. ⛔ Defend Against "Steal and Squeeze": FulcrumSec bypassed encryption to focus on data exfiltration and public shaming. For someone who has worked in the financial services sector across the Pacific including NZ, the managing of technology and cybersecurity risk exist on enterprise platforms. These platforms are not available for the small to medium businesses and even to government agencies due to the high cost. Excel has been the go to tool for risk registers and management of risk. Whilst other platforms targeting SMEs exist I felt a more tailored one for the Pacific was needed.
