Lauren Forbes (Trethowan) posted thisParkinson’s Law tells us that “work expands to fill the time available” and with the growing use of AI tools, we're getting more time back in our day. What happens to that reclaimed time? I'm curious, has your work just naturally expanded again to fill the space, or are you and your teams being intentional about how that time is used? Has your organisation or leadership provided guidance on how this new capacity should be directed? I’d love to hear if anyone teams/orgs have directed this time more deliberately and to what work. #AIatWork #Leadership #FutureOfWork #OrganisationalEffectiveness #HRLeadership

Lauren Forbes (Trethowan) posted thisUniversal Basic Income (UBI) was everywhere six or so years ago, with multiple trials planned and ongoing debate about its merits and how to fund it. With several CEOs (Amazon, Salesforce, Microsoft, McKinsey) espousing significant decline in humans required to run their organisations, due to AI, how has this not resurfaced (even if it’s not UBI, but some other form of wealth redistribution)? Even if AI creates roles (whist abolishing others) the speed of change will likely outpace human capacity to up-skill and retrain on mass. Is this conversation still happening and I'm just not seeing it? Or have we just moved on? #AIandSociety #FutureOfWork #ArtificialIntelligence #UBI

Thanks to all my wonderful colleagues, past and present. What a delight it's been. It's now time for me to step into a new adventure. Lauren Forbes (Trethowan) reacted on thisLauren Forbes (Trethowan) reacted on thisI spend the last two days in Brisbane which was both energising and nostalgic. Brisbane is a city that means a great deal to me. I spent a significant part of my consulting career here, and returning always brings back great memories and valuable connections. Over the past couple of days, I had the opportunity to meet with clients, partners, and former colleagues. Every visit reminds me just how rapidly this city is evolving. The transformation is impossible to miss. New buildings, revitalised precincts, innovative workspaces, and a growing sense of confidence are reshaping both the skyline and the business landscape. Brisbane feels increasingly like a global city with its own unique character and ambition. One statistic shared with me was that around 70% of building interiors are expected to be renovated by 2032. Whether that figure is exact or not, the scale of investment, renewal, and ambition is evident everywhere you look. The sophistication of the city continues to grow, creating opportunities across industries and sectors. What excites me most is that this is only the beginning. There is still so much to build, improve, and innovate as Queensland prepares to host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. For businesses, investors, partners, and individuals looking to make an impact, the opportunities are immense. The energy is real. The optimism is contagious. And the momentum is undeniable. Exciting times ahead for Brisbane and Queensland. #Brisbane #Queensland #Growth #Innovation #Business #Leadership #Partnerships #Olympics2032 #FutureReady #Opportunity

There were more moving parts I can count and what project doesn't have a curveball or two (but one I won't forget was a keynote speaker counterpart stepping in to deliver from Greece at 3am their time!) When an employee makes a covert recording in the workplace, the immediate HR response is often to focus on the legality and admissibility of the tape. While these are critical considerations under the NT's Surveillance Devices Act, it's a mistake to stop there. Think about the 'why'. Why did the employee feel that a secret recording was their only option? Often, it signals a significant breakdown in trust and psychological safety. It suggests that formal channels for raising concerns are perceived as ineffective, that there's a fear of not being believed, or that the power imbalance feels so great that they need irrefutable proof to be heard. Instead of only viewing the recording as a piece of evidence to be managed, see it as a cultural red flag. It points to a potential lack of open dialogue, poor management communication, or a history of unaddressed issues. While you navigate the legal complexities of the recording itself, use it as a powerful data point. It’s an opportunity to ask deeper questions about your workplace environment. Addressing the root cause of why an employee felt the need to press 'record' is fundamental to building a healthier, more transparent culture.

Capability mapping often raises an interesting question: How many organisations can confidently identify who could step into their critical roles tomorrow? Not just from a succession plan on paper, but based on demonstrated skills, readiness and development pathways. Across WA, skills shortages continue to challenge businesses, yet some of the strongest talent solutions are already sitting within organisations. The key is having visibility. When leaders understand capability across their workforce, they can make faster decisions, reduce risk and create opportunities for people to grow. I'm interested to hear from other leaders: What's proving more difficult right now in the WA market - attracting capability or retaining and developing it? #WesternAustralia #CapabilityBuilding #WorkforcePlanning #TalentStrategy #FutureOfWork

2026 is the year that every people manager will build skills to manage people well. At a recent Australian HR Institute Geelong discussion session with Jonathon Gamble and Tim Walshe from Ascent, we explored a fundamental shift in #PerformanceReviews: the move away from purely annual or biannual performance reviews toward “in the moment” feedback. It may be daily, weekly or monthly; Performance conversations that are timely, practical and embedded in real work. The research underpinning this approach draws on Leader–Member Exchange (LMX) theory — the quality of the relationship between leader and team member directly impacts performance, engagement and outcomes. The goal? Improved self-efficacy — equipping people with the confidence, knowledge and skills to solve their own challenges. So how do we get there? 🔹 Give leaders tools — practical frameworks they can use immediately 🔹 Shift HR from “chasing paperwork” to enabling capability 🔹 Build clear success profiles (with observable behaviours) behind position descriptions 🔹 Coach managers to guide, not just review Models like: • CEDAR for feedback (Context, Examples, Diagnosis, Action, Review) • RE-GROW coaching (Reflect, Goal, Reality, Options, Where-to) The big takeaway: when HR facilitates strong models and equips managers well, they no longer become “chasers” of action but are empowered to broader strategic focus. #Leadership #PerformanceManagement #HR #GeelongBusiness #Coaching #FutureOfWork
