It's not one I'll be wearing on the ground because in line with popular belief, I'm not a legendary footballer 😉, but it is one I am very proud to have. It's a Virtual Footy Jumper! A new and brilliant way to show support for a great cause. Every jumper helps fund prostate cancer research, treatment and patient care at Australian Prostate Centre so more men can live longer, better quality lives. Thank you to all the volunteers and organisations that have come together to make this special event happen. It's amazing what we can all do when we have a shared goal. Gavin Bunshaw shared thisAgeing well doesn’t start when something goes wrong. It starts with preparation. I’m not recovering from a specific injury. I’m still playing football, staying active, and trying to keep doing the things I enjoy for as long as I can. For over a year, I’ve been using #MiOK, and one thing it has reinforced for me is that small, consistent changes are what build lasting habits. That same thinking is why I was open to trying Kieser when it was suggested to me. I had known about Kieser for a while, mainly through the many stories of people recovering from back and neck injuries. I always thought it was primarily for people in recovery. But after spending time with Hamish McConnell at Kieser King Street in Melbourne, I saw it differently. The equipment is unlike the gym gear I grew up with. It’s designed to vary resistance through the full movement, helping strengthen muscles in a more controlled and targeted way. Just as importantly, Hamish helped me understand the technique, pace and discipline required to get the most benefit. For me, the goal is simple: to have my muscles ready when I need them, not only after a 30-minute warm-up. That means moving with more confidence, reducing the risk of soft tissue injuries, and giving myself the best chance to keep doing the things I love. As I get older, I’m realising quality of life is not something we should leave to chance. It’s something we can actively influence through the habits and choices we make now. I’m sharing this because I think it’s an important reminder that looking after ourselves doesn’t need to wait until something breaks. If this prompts even one person to think differently about strength, movement, ageing or prevention, then it’s worth sharing. The response was amazing and the recognition of "Our Why" changed the trajectory of our company and solidified our purpose. The answer we got to our survey was surprisingly aligned and was summarise to the following: "We exist to enrich people's lives in the areas of Environment, Health, Lifestyle and Poverty". Since that survey, DB Results has gone on to be one of the first #BCorp certified companies in Australia and was recently the first in our category to be re-certified. We have participated and driven major philanthropic activities through not only financial donations but also pro-bono work which has resulted in a number of solutions that are supporting charities and NFP's. Well done Mike. 👏 👏 👏Gavin Bunshaw shared thisIn December 2025, I published an article asking a question that kept bugging me: how far can ODC go on its own before external infrastructure becomes a necessity? So I built it. A native vector store inside ODC. No Pinecone. No Elastic. Just ODC entities, C# External Logic for the heavy math, and cosine similarity search. I wrote about the architecture, the ingestion pipeline, the tradeoffs, and where it breaks down. A few months later, OutSystems announced native Semantic Search in Beta. That was a good day. Since then, I have shared this topic at OutSystems Developer Days Melbourne. Each time the conversation grew. People working in governance-restricted environments, teams that could not bring in external vector databases, developers who just wanted to understand how embeddings and similarity search actually work under the hood. On June 3, I will be representing DB Results and sharing this on the biggest stage yet at the OutSystems ONE Conference in Amsterdam. Whitten Foundation Golf Day at the beautiful Victoria Golf Club in support of RULE Prostate Cancer Organisation and the important work they do raising awareness for prostate cancer research and early detection. Gavin Bunshaw, Andrew Dean and Mark Airs joined legendary cricketer Damien Fleming for a fantastic day filled with laughs, great company and some seriously impressive golf shots. While 7 under off the stick wasn’t quite enough to take home a prize, it was certainly enough for the team to walk away proud. Flemo was a wonderful host answering every question we threw at him as well as talking about his recent entertaining podcasts he is doing with Lehmo and Pete Helliar called “Make Me Good At Golf”. The lunch that followed was a great way to finish with some great celebrity interviews and guest speakers reminding us of how important and life saving a simple blood test can be if done early. A timely reminder to encourage the men in our lives to prioritise their health, because a simple blood test can truly save lives. A big thank you to Rob Sinclair and the team at e&s, the team at RULE Prostate Cancer Organisation, and Ted Whitten for hosting such a memorable event. Gavin Bunshaw liked thisGavin Bunshaw liked this2018 to 2026 ⏳ We had a full-circle moment last week at the Wounds Australia conference. The first time we attended was eight years ago. A lot has changed, but a lot hasn’t. Back then, we were still learning about the challenges clinicians and carers face when preventing pressure injuries, so we could build LenexaCARE around their needs. Many of those challenges remain the same. But this time, we were introducing LenexaCARE to many people who were truly onboard with the mission of prevention. It was amazing to see the reception to the technology, super proud of what the team at Lenexa Medical has achieved to be able to go toe to toe with the key opinion leaders in the space. Two key themes stood out to me from the talks: practicality and patient experience should receive greater emphasis when we think about care. Practicality Gordana Petkovska (Silverchain Group) discussed using RUG-ADL as a more dynamic pressure injury risk assessment. It is already being collected for cancer patients, whose condition can deteriorate quickly, whereas a Braden score may only be completed once a week or less. Sarah Sage (The Royal Melbourne Hospital) highlighted that selecting beds and mattresses isn’t only about the main pressure points. We also need to consider how equipment is moved around, patient comfort and decision fatigue. Zena Moore (Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI)) spoke about how guidelines, compared with standards, recognise what is practical within a particular environment. In some cases, turning someone every 20 minutes may offload pressure “better”, but it is certainly not practical for staff or patients. Patient experience Jodie Deakin PhD (Candidate), M.Ed, GC.Ed, BN, RN, DFP, CComm (Griffith University) shared that only 5% of patients received pressure injury education, highlighting the need for a simple and accessible way to educate patients. Hannah Wilson (Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI)) discussed using a co-design framework to include patients, helping ensure we are genuinely addressing their needs. Saroeun Ven (The Prince Charles Hospital) shared how patients can feel invisible within a busy hospital workflow, while a pressure injury can quietly develop and lead to a loss of agency. Eight years later, we’re still learning, but it was awesome to see how strongly the focus on practical, personalised prevention is growing. Onwards and upwards for the next eight 🚀

Focusing on Australian private hospitals, I think we may be looking in the wrong place. The latest industry data is sobering. Australia's private hospital sector recorded an operating loss of around $756 million in 2024-25. Hospitals have closed, others are under pressure, and the conversation tends to focus on insurer funding, wages, rents and supplier pricing. All of those matters, but there is another question I think hospital executives should be asking: Do we actually know what it costs to perform a procedure? Not what the budget says. Not what the preference card says. What was actually used. It's a big enough question that I've started looking into it closely myself, because I think the answer, for most hospitals, is no. There is a lot of margin leakage hiding in the detail: Consumables opened but never recorded, products used but never linked back to the procedure, Items picked but wasted, returned or reordered, preference cards that no longer reflect what happens in theatre and different clinicians using materially different products for the same procedure. (Any other?) Individually, most look insignificant. A $30 item here, a $70 item there. Across thousands of procedures, it adds up fast. A recent US study in JAMA Surgery makes the point well. Researchers at UC San Diego Health reviewed 1,298 preference cards across 432 procedures and found around US$1,300 in unused-item cost per case, US$3.7 million in total. Optimising the cards using actual consumption data cut unused-item costs across every specialty, by more than 55% in colorectal surgery. One health system overseas, but I'd expect the same pattern anywhere preference cards are treated as static paperwork rather than living data. So, this isn't really a procurement problem. It's a data problem, right? Hospitals are generally good at controlling obvious high-cost items like major implants. The bigger blind spot may be the thousands of lower-value consumables moving through theatres every day. The next opportunity is connecting the data. Track my logic: Procedure → clinician → item consumed → contracted price → reimbursement → episode margin. So instead of knowing costs went up last month, you understand why. Why does the same procedure cost more with one clinician than another? Why does actual consumption differ from the preference card? Why is an episode profitable at one hospital and marginal at another? Now, that's where things get interesting. A dashboard can only tell the truth if the data underneath it is true. With private hospital economics under this much pressure, understanding exactly where the money goes is becoming an operational necessity. Over 29,000 people packed the stadium, and the night raised more than $1.1 million for the Australian Prostate Centre. Pretty incredible to be part of a crowd that size for such a good cause. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Australian men, with 1 in 5 diagnosed in their lifetime, and events like this highlight why awareness and everyday health tracking matter. It was also a good chance to chat to people about MiOK, and the work we've been doing with Prostmate APC in the men's health space. Most of us are pretty bad at keeping track of our own health, doctor's notes end up scattered, follow-ups get forgotten. That's really what MiOK is about, just having one place to put daily check-ins, appointment notes and a few useful resources, so it's a little easier to stay on top of things. An interesting day yesterday at the CEDA - Committee for Economic Development of Australia AI Leadership Summit. What resonated most from the summit were the three powerful principles proposed by Andrew Charlton as a yardstick for what good AI looks like for Australia, and captures what we’re building at Sovereign Australia AI: Capture the economic benefit Australia’s AI investment shouldn’t flow offshore. Every dollar we invest in AI should stay in our economy, ensuring our nation captures the value we create rather than exporting it to Silicon Valley. Equitable access True digital sovereignty means ALL Australians, government, enterprise, researchers, and startups, have equal access to AI capabilities without US export controls or prioritisation policies. We’re not second-tier customers. Sovereign AI ensures no Australian is locked out of the AI revolution. Safety Safety isn’t just about model alignment, it’s about data sovereignty. When your AI provider operates under US laws like the CLOUD Act, your data is never truly secure. Australian-owned infrastructure means Australian law protects Australian data. Full stop. No foreign government access. No extraterritorial complications.
