a lot of internet safety tips young people learned are outdated now, and make them think of it as no longer relevant. here’s some (still relevant) internet safety tips:
-don’t post personal info. this means no full name, no specific location, nothing that could be used to easily identify you.
-be very careful about posting any other personal info. don’t share things like medical info unless you know the dangers, such as it being used against you. when you do share personal info, be as vague as possible. for instance, say midwest instead of your state, or disabled instead of all your diagnoses.
-if you’re a minor, don’t post your age. if you want to clarify that you’re a minor, just put the word minor in your bio and leave it. avoid other things that could reveal your age, such as stating what grade you’re in or your birth year.
-don’t share information unless it is relevant. i use aliases on all of my non-personal accounts, and i recommend doing the same. people don’t need to know your real name on an editing account. using different aliases and usernames also helps prevent someone linking your accounts together.
-be mindful of things in the background of photos and videos. the position of a street sign could give away your address, or a pill bottle could reveal your full legal name. don’t use location tagging.
-never share information you are uncomfortable sharing, or that you feel puts you in danger. remember that anything you share can be scrutinized and you could be harassed for it. for instance, if you don’t feel like you can handle transphobic asks, don’t reveal that you’re trans.
-the block function is there for a reason. use it. report people who are being inappropriate.
-learn about online crimes and how to react to them. for example, if you’re a minor and someone has your nudes or is distributing them, that is child pornography and you need to contact the police.
-never send nude photos of yourself unless you are aware of the potential consequences. even if deleted or erased, they can still be retrieved or stored separately. if you are a minor, you should never take or send any nudes, no matter what.
-remember that anybody can see your posts. even on a private account, someone could show your post to their friends or parents. algorithms, like tiktoks, will push your content to people who know you. your parents, partner, teachers, etc. could find out, so be very careful about what you post, who can see it, and potential consequences if these people see your post.
this is v long, feel free to add on!
