The men were convicted over alleged plan to stage coup and organise deadly demonstrations over fuel prices last year

Two Russian men have been found guilty by an Angolan court of terrorism and spying after being accused of planning a coup and helping to organise deadly demonstrations in the southern African country last year.

Lev Lakshtanov and Igor Ratchin were sentenced to eight and 11 years in jail respectively. They had denied the charges, claiming they were in Angola for cultural and business activities.

Burna Boy, Wizkid, Tyla and more took African pop global. So why don’t they tour Africa itself?

Due to many obstacles – from security to air fares – local fans lose out as African artists tour overseas instead. But as western corporations invest, there are more worries besides

When a major African pop artist announces a world tour these days, you will see Paris, New York, Toronto and Amsterdam among the dates. You will see multiple nights at London’s O2 Arena – a venue that has become a regular hub for Nigerian pop supremacy. You will see grand, multimillion-dollar stage designs, towering LED screens and meticulously choreographed dancing as artists such as Burna Boy, Wizkid, Asake, Rema, Tyla and Tems have become global stars.

What you will rarely see, however, is a comprehensive, interconnected list of dates in Accra, Nairobi, Johannesburg, Kigali or Luanda: the cities that birthed these acts. It is a central paradox of the current African music surge: the continent’s biggest cultural exports are struggling to perform consistently for audiences across the continent.

The pope’s African tour shows the continent is vital to the future of Catholicism

Amid the US far right’s hijacking of Christianity and his very public row with Trump, Pope Leo XIV’s visit is symbolic of the ‘growing centrality of Africa and its Black diaspora’

• Don’t get The Long Wave delivered to your inbox? Sign up here

Almost a year after his election, Pope Leo XIV made his first visit to Africa, the longest international trip of his tenure so far. The visit is heavy with symbolism at a time of global unsettlement, one during which the stature and importance of the pope extends far beyond the church. I spoke with Father Ambroise Tine, formerly secretary general of Caritas Senegal, and currently of the diocese of Thiès in Senegal, about the significance of the papal visit.

How the US-Israel war on Iran is affecting African economies

For some, the impact is already being felt but others remain in limbo over their energy security and are hostage to an unlikely de-escalation

• Don’t get The Long Wave delivered to your inbox? Sign up here

It remains a confusing situation, but the strait of Hormuz now appears to have been closed twice. Once by Iran, and then by the US, which this week announced a blockade of its own on the reduced number of ships using Iranian ports. Higher fuel and energy costs for ordinary people across the world are the headlines, but as the war on Iran enters its sixth week, shipping restrictions and strikes on energy facilities in Gulf countries are affecting some of the poorest and most vulnerable economies in the world in more profound ways.

I spoke to Dr. Zainab Usman, senior research scholar at the Centre on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University, about how the war and its blockades are affecting some African countries.

Outgunned review – action-thriller in Angola sees sadistic child-hunting gang out for revenge

Danica De La Rey Jones’s elite fighter is targeted in a film that would be more exciting if its padded runtime was trimmed down

Here is an action-thriller that opens with some zesty Call of Duty-style military violence unfolding in Angola in 2013. A crack unit believe themselves to be in pursuit of poachers who kill protected animals for profit, but these baddies turn out to be all that and more: they kidnap children, burying them underground in coffins with a wifi connection so that they can broadcast live footage of the kids to their parents when they demand ransom money. In short, they’re not very nice people. Elite fighter Jessica (Danica De La Rey Jones) handily wrecks their operation and now, more than a decade later, they’re after revenge.

The revenge takes the form of hunting this resourceful single mother, whom they have finally located despite a change of identity, through the bushland of South Africa, with a motley crew of villains all loosely connected to the enterprise she took down back in the day. Their leader is a relentless sadist called Lazar, who is written as a fairly one-note character – and that note is simply, “he’s evil” – but full credit to actor Richard Lukunku for finding a way to smash that one note over and over again in a manner that’s actually pretty effective in a blunt-force trauma kind of way.

US and EU critical minerals project could displace thousands in DRC – report

Global Witness says plan to upgrade railway line to Angola puts up to 1,200 buildings at risk of demolition

Up to 6,500 people are at risk of being displaced in the Democratic Republic of the Congo by a multi-billion-dollar infrastructure project funded by the EU and the US, amid a global race to secure supplies of copper, cobalt and other “critical minerals”, according to a report by campaign group Global Witness.

The project, labelled the Lobito Corridor, aims to upgrade the colonial-era Benguela railway from the DRC to Lobito on Angola’s coast and improve port infrastructure, as well as building a railway line to Zambia and supporting agriculture and solar power installations along the route. Angola has said it needs $4.5bn (£3.4bn) for its stretch of the line.

Ghost Elephants review – Werner Herzog embarks on a mission to track down giant jumbos

Venice film festival
In his inimitable fashion, Herzog follows a South African naturalist’s quest to discover a new species of elephant in Angola

Werner Herzog has once again shown his flair – his genius, perhaps – for locating passionate quests and obsessions at the limits of the imaginable. This new film is about South African naturalist Dr Steve Boyes and his mission to discover if there is a hitherto undiscovered mega-species of giant elephants, or “ghost elephants”, living beyond the human gaze in the vast highland plateau of Angola. He also wants to see if these fugitive elephants – if they exist – are genetically related to a particular huge elephant, the biggest on record, which is on show at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC, named the “Fénykövi” elephant after the hunter who shot it in 1955.

Boyes has been nurturing this hunch for many years. It is not clear what the scientific basis for his hypothesis is, but he is in constant touch with Kalahari bush trackers in Namibia, whose instinctive understanding of elephants has led him to this vision. He and his team conduct an expedition into Angola, intent on finding the “ghost elephants” and getting a DNA sample to take back to the Smithsonian – rather like a Jurassic Park movie – having first gained permission to do so from a tribal king in a ceremony treated without mockery.

Namibia’s first president and ‘founding father’ who led the fight for independence from the apartheid regime in South Africa

The first president of Namibia, Sam Nujoma, who has died aged 95, was one of the original liberation leaders who fought against the colonial project of southern Africa and, in particular, the racist apartheid regime of South Africa that had ruled his country since the end of the first world war.

Nujoma may not have been as great as Nelson Mandela in any moral sense, nor as Robert Mugabe in terms of the militarised conduct of liberation. However, he had none of the advantages of those two, whose countries both had a literate and educated population, and an – even if discriminatory – infrastructure that could be adapted for liberation.

Cheap, smart and efficient: how giant rats are transforming the fight against TB

After success in Tanzania, other African countries may introduce the rodents to help sniff out the disease

Mwajuma Abdalla Ngema went to the clinic in Dar es Salaam with a persistent cough and intense pain around her ribs. The mother of two was tested for tuberculosis (TB) but the result came back negative. “I was given some medication to manage the cough but the pain was unbearable,” says Ngema, who went home feeling frustrated at the lack of clarity over her health.

A few days later, Ngema was called back to Mbagala Kizuiani clinic – she had subsequently tested positive. She was relieved to finally have a diagnosis: “I am currently on medication and on the road to recovery.”

US and EU are supporting infrastructure projects in Angola, which has historically been closer to Russia and China

When Joe Biden travels to Angola on Sunday, it will be the first trip to an African country of his presidency and the first to the continent by a sitting US president since Barack Obama visited Kenya and Ethiopia in 2015.

It is a marker of how Africa’s 54 countries are increasingly courted by global powers, drawn to the continent by geopolitical shifts and an abundance of minerals needed for electric cars and other battery-powered technologies.

Health of three of four detained a year ago has deteriorated sharply after medical care withheld, charity says

Amnesty International has urged authorities in Angola to free four activists who were detained a year ago for planning a peaceful protest, and an influencer who criticised the president in a TikTok video.

The four activists were arrested in September last year before a protest against restrictions on motorcycle taxi drivers. They were sentenced to two years and five months in prison for “disobedience and resisting orders”.
‘I was in tears’: exhibition tells human stories of Portugal’s colonial legacy

Family Albums: Photographs of the African Diaspora is a counter-narrative to its monument home, built to glorify the nation’s former empire

Its thousands of images hail from around the world, capturing an empire that spanned from Angola to Cape Verde and beyond. For historian Filipa Lowndes Vicente, however, 10 years of combing through the country’s colonial archives proved deeply unsettling; revealing people who were often nameless and were probably photographed without consent.

“These are violent visual archives,” said Vicente, a researcher at the university. So last year she began dreaming up a response, inviting Portuguese families of African descent to rummage through their drawers and phones to put together their own photo archive.

The greatest street in Angola: Kim Praise’s best photograph

‘I decided to get above street level and show the mix of colours: the oranges of the market set against the reds of the roofs. It is my country at its very best’

São Paulo market, where this was taken, is near the heart of Luanda, the capital of Angola. It is one of the most important markets in the city, not just because of how many people rely on it to make a living, but because it’s a place where Luanda’s population come to mingle, from the rich to the poor. On this day in June 2022, the sun was beating down and I wanted to show the market in all its colour, movement and life, and to situate it within the city at large. I decided I needed to get above street level to show the mix of colours that make it feel so exciting, all the different paths people weave through it.

This image was taken with a drone hovering high above the market. It allowed me to have a different view from the one visitors usually have – the bright orange of the parasols, the sense of so many people in motion, the sheer scale of it stretching off into the distance. But the drone also meant I could situate the market in the rest of the city: the oranges of the market set against the reds of the roofs and the blues of the surrounding buildings. It’s a view many Angolans do not get to see. When people think of Angola, I don’t think this is what they imagine, but it is my country at its very best.

In a ‘message of hope’ the animals have been brought in from Namibia to establish a group in their historical homeland

After an epic 36-hour journey, the first native giraffes to be returned to an Angolan national park arrived from Namibia this week, in what many hope to be the first of multiple translocations to return the animals to their historical homeland.

The giraffes, seven males and seven females, travelled more than 800 miles (1,300km) from a private game farm near Otjiwarongo in the Otjozondjupa region of central Namibia to Iona national park in the south-west corner of Angola.
