Gen Z and millennials have it far worse than my generation. Here's why | Opinion

'I know my age group has called the young lazy, entitled snowflakes,' says Guardian columnist Polly Toynbee, who has been writing for the Guardian for nearly 50 years. 'But I know whose side I’m on and it’s not my own generation’s.'

Polly believes that the social contract between younger and older generations has been broken, with gen Z and millennials set to be worse off than their parents in the face of soaring unemployment, stagnating wages and ballooning house prices.

New research carried out for the BBC suggests that people in their 20s are facing a worse start to adulthood than any other generation in almost half a century, with more than 40% of 25-year-olds now living with their parents.

Watch to find out why Polly thinks her generation owes the younger ones an apology - and how they can right these wrongs
Continue reading...

Why I'll never be convinced by Meta's ‘pervert’ glasses | Opinion

'Most people don’t want pervert glasses that can film us without our consent,' said a spokesperson from activist group Everyone Hates Elon. The group has launched a series of guerilla adverts deriding non-consensual filming by the glasses as well as an email campaign encouraging people to legally object to being filmed by Meta glasses under general data protection regulations, which over 20,000 people have signed.

Rights groups have warned that the glasses threaten the right to privacy, while countries such as Germany are reportedly considering a ban.

And while Meta’s safety guidelines say smart glasses should not be used for 'harassment, infringing on privacy rights, or capturing sensitive information', women have taken to social media to share their stories of being filmed by men without their consent.

Watch as Guardian columnist and Opinion editor Kirsty Major dives into why fears of surveillance and 'creepy men' mean Meta can never convince her to love the glasses – and read more about the glasses via the link in the bio
Continue reading...

The UK and Europe have been facing extreme heatwaves – Greenpeace recorded temperatures of up to 53C at one London playground in recent weeks. It’s clear our cities are not equipped to deal with the soaring temperatures brought by the climate crisis. With the ‘Super El Niño’ on its way, next year is forecast to get even hotter. But is anyone really doing anything about it? The Guardian’s deputy opinion editor Kirsty Major goes in search of playgrounds that are adapting to our new reality
Continue reading...

Are British graduates being conned? | Opinion

Thousands of students are graduating into an employment crisis, leaving them feeling hopeless and overqualified, as well as dealing with enormous debts from tuition fees. When higher education was transformed, teenagers were offered a deal - pay £9,000 a year and secure a ‘bright future’. But as the Guardian’s economics commentator Aditya Chakrabortty accurately predicted, for many the reality has been very different
Continue reading...

In the third episode of a new series of Anywhere but Westminster, John Harris and John Domokos travel around the West Midlands, and find a fascinating political mixture: hesitant Labour voters, a new crop of independents focused on Palestine and local cuts – and, amid deep social problems, lots of people who think the election hardly matters.

By 2020 everything from the proms to sausage rolls were said to be at risk from 'woke' online warriors. But what does it even mean to be woke? Who were the original anti-woke campaigners? And who benefits and suffers when these manufactured culture wars divide us? Owen Jones – often described as 'too woke' himself – tries to find out
Continue reading...

What do we want life after lockdown to look like? As part of a new series, A new normal, Guardian journalist Iman Amrani asks viewers what their hopes are for the future. While there are a lot of uncertainties and anxiety looking beyond Covid-19, there is also an opportunity to reshape the world we live in, from the environment, to working practices, to relationships. In this first episode, Iman asks who the most reassuring voices have been during this time, from Jacinda Ardern and the Queen to Piers Morgan, and what this might mean looking ahead
Continue reading...

Life in lockdown: how to keep a city alive – video

Six weeks into Britain's Covid-19 crisis, Anywhere but Westminster asks how a city keeps going when everything has ground to a halt. The team virtually visits Plymouth, population 250,000, to see how the services that are vital to a city and its inhabitants are scrabbling to stay afloat. The fishing industry is in meltdown, temporary housing is oversubscribed and nurses facilitate goodbyes over Zoom. Most of all, people are asking: what on earth happens after this?

Watch our previous Anywhere but Westminster videos

Music: Lament by Simon Dobson: www.simon-dobson.co.uk

All over the country, people turn the camera on their lives and show how Covid-19 has changed their experience of work. A medical courier at the heart of the crisis demands basic rights, a worker at an empty airport pulls together a union hardship fund - and people in a range of jobs try to navigate the buckling benefits system and the government's scheme to help people who are no longer working. What burns through is the sudden urgency of people joining together to avoid the worst

Coronavirus – latest updates

See all our coronavirus coverage

Music: Bells by Phil France on Gondwana records - more info here
Continue reading...
