Is AI your new wingman? How chatbots are transforming dating

Almost 40% of British singles have used AI for romantic advice, from writing messages to assessing potential partners

After Sam’s ex joked that her sister found him ugly, he turned to AI. Google Gemini had a look at the photo and politely disagreed. AI has been his wingman ever since, aiding his dating life by giving pep talks and vetting his messages.

The 27-year-old from Stoke-on-Trent is not the only AI-assisted romantic – a survey of 3,000 British singles published this month by Match Group, the owner of the Tinder and Hinge platforms, found 39% had used AI in their dating lives.

Credit where it’s due to AI for uncovering the PHP flaw – and discredit to the leaker | Letters

David Gibson says the problem is that details of the flaw were revealed before it was fixed, while Charles MacKinnon notes that we are at the mercy of technology we don’t understand

Chris Stokel-Walker may be right (The internet has broken – again. Shouldn’t the tech firms that make billions from it pay to fix it?, 22 October), but the real issue lies elsewhere. The bugs in the PHP programming language that were recently found by an AI tool have been present for a long time without anybody noticing and without any harm being done – they are extremely obscure.

They were not found by hackers – they were found because an AI tool was used to check the PHP source code, which is a good use of AI.

A question for those who hate datacentres

Technology and urban planning | The Guardian letters page | Porridge

Your account of the datacentre controversy in Cardiff (The datacentre next door: on the frontline of tech’s latest David v Goliath battle, 24 October) missed out the important balancing fact that Cardiff council is seeking a replacement site for the park and ride facility that services the city’s main hospital. We also should ask the anti-datacentre folk if they’d be prepared to stop using their computers – lots of their online time will be using such datacentres.
David Rennie
Cardiff

• Lucy Biggs’ letter struck a chord (Life and love, shaped by the Guardian, 23 October). The letters page has allowed me to contribute to global, open, democratic discourse on diverse subjects for almost 25 years. It certainly beats howling into the cosmos, and just may help draw attention to an issue. Is there any other forum that offers such scope and reach?

Electrocutions, disease and no pay: how workers risk exploitation in Europe’s datacentres

As thousands of datacentres are constructed across Europe, the Guardian and Investigate Europe have uncovered disturbing evidence that some workers building them are exposed to dangerous conditions and living in fear of speaking out

Sandu* checked his watch. He was winding down the last 15 minutes of his shift at a vast Google datacentre site in Saint-Ghislain, Belgium, in March, when the call came in. The 34-year-old electrical tester had already worked almost 10 hours, but says such last-minute jobs were normal: “I had no choice. People have been fired after saying no.”

The task was one Sandu had done many times before and involved a series of tests measuring the safety and integrity of the electrical wiring. A protective suit was locked away in an equipment room. The round trip would have added another 15 minutes to the job, he says, and people were waiting, so he decided not to retrieve the suit.

‘There is no inevitable dystopia’: Jeanette Winterson on AI and the future of humanity

The author believes we are at a turning point as a species – and even in the shadow of big tech it’s up to us how we want to proceed

‘I am a storyteller by trade,” writes Jeanette Winterson on the first page of her 2021 book 12 Bytes, an idiosyncratic and thought-provoking series of essays in which she considered just how artificial intelligence might change everything about our lives. “And I know everything we do is a fiction until it’s a fact: the dream of flying, the dream of space travel, the dream of speaking to someone instantly, across time and space, the dream of not dying – or of returning.”

She had already been thinking about our possible futures for at least 15 years – her 2007 novel, The Stone Gods, for instance, imagined a post-climate catastrophe world populated by robots and humans who never age, while 12 Bytes was preceded by Frankisstein: A Love Story, which alternates a recreation of the summer Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein with a trans doctor’s travels among present-day cryogenecists and AI-enabled robots.

Elon Musk’s AI Odyssey review – the dullest, most pointless riposte possible to Christopher Nolan’s brilliant epic

It is hardly a shock that Grok AI’s interpretation of Homer is as meaningless as a laptop screensaver. The only surprise would be if Musk accepted defeat graciously. Which he won’t

Think back. Do you remember when Elon Musk, in a weird online tantrum, and without having seen the film, condemned the supposed wokery in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, for getting Elliot Page to play Sinon and Lupita Nyong’o to play Helen of Troy? As the plaudits and the box-office receipts for Nolan’s Odyssey piled stratospherically up, Musk showed that being a good loser is not among his qualities. He petulantly exclaimed that he could do his own better and more authentic Odyssey on Grok AI. And now he has released the first online seven-minute “episode” to a world that has long since forgotten about this claim and didn’t care in the first place.

In Musk’s version, as the tale begins Odysseus is – off screen – pretending to be mad to avoid fighting in the Trojan war. Grim-faced Palamedes and Agamemnon are shown testing this ruse by taking his baby boy Telemachus and placing him in the harm’s way of a plough in a field; Odysseus instantly rushes to save his child, showing that he isn’t mad, and agrees to fight. We see him join the armada, with Penelope and Telemachus (soon to grow to a little boy) left behind. This, effectively, is a prologue sequence that is not in Nolan. The expeditionary force arrives at Troy, and an intertitle tells us we have cut to a 10-years-later flashforward; the siege is about to escalate into the fake-horse attack.

Investigation finds dozens of ministers and civil servants moved into AI roles as government developed datacentre expansion plans

The UK’s policy on datacentres and AI was developed without any meetings with environmental groups, an investigation has found.

The nonprofit organisation Spotlight on Corruption said a “considerable revolving door” shaped the government’s development of “AI growth zones”, a central plank of the former prime minister Keir Starmer’s AI and economic policy, with 38 ministers, senior civil servants and special advisers hired to positions in AI companies between July 2024 and September 2026.

Company says small number of devices affected by display glitch after posts appear on Reddit and social media

Owners of the new foldable iPhone are reporting cracks in the device’s screen, as Apple confirmed an issue with a “small number” of units.

Reports of cracks have emerged on Reddit and social media platforms since the handset went on general sale globally on Friday. Experts said there had been too few examples to determine whether there was a more serious problem with Apple’s first foldable device, which retails from $1,999 (£1,499).

Compare the concrete masts with their timber predecessors and other structures seen on suburban streets

In something of a David v Goliath battle, Australia’s largest datacentre operator has faced a major setback in its plans to double the size of its west Melbourne facility.

To expand the size of its M3 datacentre, NextDC needs to deliver increased electricity to the site. The initial approach from the electricity provider Jemena was to upgrade power lines along some suburban streets from shorter timber poles carrying lower voltage lines to taller concrete poles capable of carrying higher voltage lines.

The hill I will die on: The email sign-off is archaic - it needs to go. No regards, Tom | Tom Gill

The torture of the inbox is made insufferably worse by the dated cliches at the beginning and end. Enough!

If email were a person, it would be an adult dressed in a teenager’s clothes, desperately trying to stay relevant. Despite being 55 years old and having been surpassed by numerous developments in communication technologies, its functionality remains largely the same as when it was first widely adopted. Unfortunately, so does the etiquette surrounding it.

Whereas other forms of communication have long since dispensed with unnecessary textual tassels, email communication styles still lean closer to telegram than a text. Since I last checked, almost no one relishes receiving a new email – unless it’s informing you of a significant cash windfall that means you can, in fact, now quit your job and stop using it altogether. Yet, for some reason, many people start their responses with “Thank you for your email!” I would put this forward as one of the least convincing sentences in the English language.

Suddenly, he spawns four digital clones that peel off out of view to re-emerge in different settings around the world.

This scene from a social media video is fake and generated by artificial intelligence. But it has been authorised by the very real 22-year-old footballer, Cristian Volpato, the latest professional athlete to licence and monetise his AI likeness.

The Guardian view on AI safety: the push for global regulation must advance | Editorial

The current US administration is an obstacle, but public demand for protection will ultimately prevail

Organisations around the world scrambled on Thursday to fix critical flaws in PHP, the software that powers much of the web. The vulnerabilities could allow attackers to take control of affected servers. Some websites were taken offline as a precaution while fixes were installed. The paradox is that while AI helped researchers uncover the flaw, it also threatens to accelerate the ability to exploit it. Amazon said that it had detected an attempt before the public disclosure of the PHP flaws.

What the episode highlights is AI’s central role in security – and not always for the right reasons. OpenAI’s models have also been responsible for two alarming hacks this year – a security breach of an Australian health department website and a raid by a swarm of AI bots on Hugging Face, an AI services platform. Citing those incidents, the AI minister, Kanishka Narayan, warned that a similar cyber-attack on the UK is “likely, if not inevitable”.

Websites around the world have been taken offline as governments and businesses scramble to fix a flaw in the computer language PHP. There are fears that hackers could exploit the vulnerability to steal data, take control of web servers and disrupt services. Millions of attempts have already been made to attack websites since the issue with the programming language was revealed, cybersecurity companies have said.
