Before I Forget review – actors shine in moving story of dementia, language and legacy

Fairfax Studio, Arts Centre Melbourne
When the three leads share the stage, this poignant new work crackles with energy and wit. But it sags in the moments between

Get our weekend culture and lifestyle email

Some theatrical ideas come with poignancy and depth baked into their conceit, as if a playwright need only set the characters down in a situation for the work to write itself. Before I Forget, the tale of three generations of First Nations women grappling with the early-onset dementia of their matriarch – a famed linguist and academic who holds decades of ancestral knowledge in her rapidly unravelling mind – should be just such a play. It is moving and resonates outwards. But it ultimately fails to deliver on its powerful promise, as if haunted by a better play waiting in the wings.

It opens on a lecture – a didactic mode which, in this work, the playwright, Kamarra Bell-Wykes, never fully shakes – delivered by Faith Well (Roxanne McDonald), celebrating her work with the Badtjala/Butchella language and the dictionary she produced for future generations. Her memory falters mid-speech and suddenly we are in the present: her daughter, Karma (Melodie Reynolds-Diarra), and granddaughter, Hope (Tyallah Bullock), need to know where the keys are, and grandma has forgotten again.

Tosca review – ENO’s new staging abandons Puccini’s realism for baffling and near-constant violence

Coliseum, London
Annilese Miskimmon’s new production of Puccini’s complex drama unmoors it from its church and state settings, but there are few gains, only losses in her radical reading. Christopher Purves’ brutish Scarpia, however, is terrific

Four years since English National Opera unveiled its previous Tosca (a hyper-stylised affair directed by Christof Loy), the curtain goes up on another new production, this time by ENO’s artistic director Annilese Miskimmon. The appeal of Puccini’s work to any company – never mind one urgently committed to stabilising itself – is clear. Tosca is one of opera’s most bankable titles and a complex, compact drama about power with endless potential for contemporary “relevance”.

It’s also an opera rooted in the specifics of three real locations – at least according to the original text and stage directions. Where other operas’ settings are regularly reimagined, Tosca’s ultra-realism has proved exceptionally immovable. Miskimmon’s decision to strip Amanda Holden’s translation of all references to particular places and – still more unusual – to set the entire opera in a single space might thus have been a radical creative departure.

Dafne Keen and Harriet Walter on working with Patrick Stewart: ‘I’ve never seen anyone so ecstatic’

The late actor’s co-stars in Logan and Anthony and Cleopatra remember dog impressions, marching band-conducting and a fervent belief in fun

I had the unbelievable privilege of working with Patrick when I was 11 [in Logan]. He was a man of extraordinary warmth, wit and generosity. He possessed that increasingly rare ability to make everyone around him feel as though they were being let in on something wonderful. To work alongside him was to be reminded, every day, of what it means to love what you do, and to share that love with others. He imparted lessons in a way that was so wise, you didn’t even realise you were being taught.

The best theatre to stream this month: the Gisèle Pelicot trial becomes an all-star play that ‘just floors you’

An unmissable documentary play, Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia with luminous Isis Hainsworth and ecstatic dance in a Norwegian museum are among November’s highlights

Swiss director Milo Rau’s ripped-from-the-headlines approach to theatre has included shows about wars in Iraq and Congo and the exploitation of migrant workers. His four-hour documentary play (created with Servane Dècle) about the trial of the men who drugged and raped Gisèle Pelicot has been performed around the world and will be staged by the Young Vic at London’s County Hall on 30 November. The production swiftly sold out but will be livestreamed in full. The cast includes Adjoa Andoh, Rosie Jones and Olivia Williams. “It was the act of witnessing that really got me,” said Young Vic boss Nadia Fall of the show. “It isn’t scenes and costumes in a set like a traditional piece of theatre. It is the facts. It just floors you.”

But what’s the secret to making an audience gasp in terror?

It was 1am. Total darkness. Locking up a wedding venue, Sam Beech’s car sensor went off: there was something behind him. “It went on for half an hour,” the writer and director recalls, “on the front bumper, then round the back. But every time I looked, there was nothing.” It kept going, snuffling around the car. So he stopped looking. “I thought: ‘If I don’t look behind me, it won’t get me.’” Since then, Beech, the creator of one of a plethora of horror shows currently haunting the stage, admits, “I don’t like driving in the dark”.

Beech’s experience was eerily similar to a scene in Andy Nyman’s hit 2010 play Ghost Stories, which Beech had seen four times, so the gnarly end the character had met on stage filled his mind when the sensor went off in the dark. Now, the uncanny experience has fed into his own new horror show Blackout (touring the UK to 27 February), which uses everything that made him so scared that night: the quiet, the absence, the idea of something lurking in the shadows. “It’s the Jaws effect,” says Chris Fisher, the illusions designer behind the stage show of Paranormal Activity (at London Ambassador’s theatre to 27 February, and touring the UK), which had me sheepishly checking under my bed for several nights and stopped just short of nightmares. “It’s scarier to see the fin and hear the music,” Fisher says, “than it is to see the mechanical head of the shark.”

From Shakespeare to Star Trek: Patrick Stewart’s extraordinary life – The Latest

Tributes have poured in for Patrick Stewart, who has died aged 86. The distinguished actor had a long and varied career that began on stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company before going on to global stardom on the screen in the Star Trek and X-Men franchises. Stewart was born in Yorkshire in 1940, and had spoken of a challenging childhood marred by alcoholism and domestic violence – something he campaigned against for much of his life. Lucy Hough speaks to the Guardian film critic Peter Bradshaw – watch on YouTube

--

Watch the full Patrick Stewart sketch: what has the ECHR ever done for us?

Ceilidh: A New Musical review – a joyous, riotous celebration of Scottish culture gets the audience on its feet

Shoreditch town hall, London
Scott Gilmour and Claire McKenzie’s audience participation musical gets toes tapping and bodies spinning – even if its story lacks a little depth

There’s only one thing you need to know before you dance in a ceilidh, we’re told at the start of this show: “In 2,000 years, no one has ever looked good doing it.” But who notices, or cares, when they’re spinning dizzyingly in a joyful mass of bodies? Certainly not the audience at Shoreditch town hall, as they took to the floor in Scott Gilmour and Claire McKenzie’s interactive new musical.

Staged in the round, with ample space for stripping the willow, Ceilidh is directed by Sam Pinkleton, whose Tony-winning Oh, Mary! proved what he can do with anarchic energy. It began its UK tour at the Pitlochry festival theatre after a short run in the US and feels like an authentic community event. Before curtain-up, actor-musicians mill sociably with the punters on the dancefloor, and by the time the bodhrán rhythms kick off in earnest, every toe is tapping in anticipation.

A Few Good Men review – Aaron Sorkin’s legal drama makes unwelcome return to stage

Vivian Beaumont theater, New York City
Unconvincing performances and an ill-fitting big stage make a retooled version of the classic courtroom drama feel like a missed opportunity

Given the current state of the US military brass, it makes some sense that audiences would want to drift back to an older, nobler idea of the armed services, in which bad actors exist but are rooted out by the good guys in uniform. That perhaps explains the Broadway revival of A Few Good Men, Aaron Sorkin’s 1989 courtroom drama about a cocky military attorney defending two young marines who followed an illegal order with fatal results. The play is at once sharp and misty-eyed, critiquing a hallowed institution while reverently imbuing it with a certain dignity – in some ways, it does for the military what Sorkin’s The West Wing did for the Oval Office.

A Few Good Men was turned into a hit Oscar-nominated film in 1992, starring a then boyish Tom Cruise in the role of recalcitrant navy lawyer Daniel Kaffee and a frightening Jack Nicholson as Kaffee’s ultimate enemy, Colonel Jessep, the hardliner in command of the US military base at Guantánamo Bay, where a marine has died under troubling circumstances. Directed by Rob Reiner, the film is a clever, old-fashioned crowd pleaser, culminating in a classic trial scene punctuated by the line. “You can’t handle the truth!”, Jessep memorably bellows at Kaffee just before confessing to his misdeeds. Those in search of crackling drama and sentimentality about the military should just watch that film, rather than plunking down a considerable sum of money to see the play in its current form at Lincoln Center’s Vivian Beaumont theater.

Patrick Stewart brought gravitas and complexity to the screen, from Star Trek to X-Men

From Jean-Luc Picard to Charles Xavier, the actor’s Shakespearean training – and that sonorous voice – made him a unique charismatic force in Hollywood

Patrick Stewart dies age 86

His life in pictures

O Captain, our Captain: on Star Trek, Patrick Stewart could make anyone feel hopeful for humanity

‘He stood for the best of us’: William Shatner and more pay tribute

No actor showed the commercial potential of blue-chip British classical training like Patrick Stewart. With style, technique and the most minutely self-aware, almost vaudevillian sense of mimicry, Shakespearean thesps can turn their hand to American movies and high-end American television and show the American method actors how it’s done – sometimes, even, at the beginning of their screen careers, at a competitively low wage.

Stewart was one of the thoroughbreds of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 1970s stage generation who had also had classy small screen roles, such as his intimidating Sejanus in I, Claudius opposite Derek Jacobi. But he effected a warp-speed leap to pop culture stardom by getting the role of Jean-Luc Picard, captain of the Federation starship USS Enterprise, in TV’s Star Trek: The Next Generation, the hugely successful reboot of Star Trek that ran from 1987 to 1994, spawning four separate feature films and then another series, Star Trek: Picard.

Middlemarch review – World’s Greatest Novel hurtles from deathbed panto to jolting marital tragedy

Swan theatre, Stratford-Upon-Avon
This RSC staging of the sprawling middle England masterpiece has humour, compassion – and even George Eliot herself as a character

Is there a literary achievement greater than George Eliot’s stonking masterpiece? Not according to a Guardian poll, topped by this sprawling, contemplative and profound book about marriage, moral goodness, debt, death, God and everything in between. So how do you adapt its nonpareil greatness for the stage without flattening the moral, philosophical and psychological complexities?

Andrew Davies had a go at it with his watchable enough 1994 television costume drama, retelling Eliot’s story about provincial life, in six parts. A mere six-parts, you might say, for a novel that is about 900 pages. While its timeline only spans three years in the life of a fictional Midlands town, it juggles multiple storylines and perspectives, weaves the local with the big socio-political backdrops of its age and follows the trajectories of characters with such detail that it becomes hard to replicate in another form.

The Sea review – Jennifer Saunders takes fussing over buying curtains to Shakespearean levels

Theatre Royal Bath
Edward Bond’s play about consumerism and the strength of humans in dark times is hugely enlivened by Saunders and her tight-lipped pomposity

When describing his own play, the late playwright Edward Bond said he wanted The Sea to deal with tragedy, be a comedy and end with people being as honest and open as they could. Jonathan Munby’s production – the first major revival in almost 20 years – begins by offering its audience a view that would ordinarily be obscured: we’re plunged underwater to where the seafaring Colin (Elliot Goodhill) hangs suspended from a rope, fighting for his life, as the waves of Luke Halls’ impressive videography engulf him.

It’s a fitting opening sequence for a play that subsequently demands its audience look beneath the surface to find meaning in seemingly trivial interactions. It’s jarring when, come the following scene, we’re flung into a draper’s shop, where Jennifer Saunders’ avaricious, egotistical Mrs Rafi is fussing over curtain material. But Bond understood consumerism as a distraction from the pain and absurdity of life. Similarly, his characters sing their hymns ever louder when there’s gunfire in the distance. They also stage an annual play to raise money for their seaside village’s coastguards, while maintaining distance from any trouble their beneficiaries face on the ground.

Putting short plays under the spotlight | Brief letters

Caryl Churchill | King Charles and reparations | Homosexuality in the military | Road signs | Poems on Alex Higgins

It’s good to see Caryl Churchill bringing short plays back to national attention (Editorial, 23 October). JB Shorts in Manchester has been producing six new short plays by TV writers, twice-yearly for two-week runs, since 2009. Bite-Size Plays in Brighton is another good example. This popular form of theatre has gone on under the radar for decades.
Trevor Suthers
Manchester

• Dr Niambi Hall Campbell-Dean, chair of the Bahamas National Reparations Committee, describes King Charles as “the person who is responsible for the enslavement and colonisation of our ancestors” (‘We want a full apology for slavery’: Commonwealth at a crossroads as king heads to the Caribbean, 27 October). No, he isn’t – any more than Pope Leo is responsible for the crimes of the Inquisition. You can’t inherit guilt.

Girls review – a story of friendship amidst extreme misogynist violence

Young Vic, London
Recalling Boko Haram’s abduction of schoolgirls in Chibok in 2014, Theresa Ikoko’s fierce and tender play reveals how three teenagers find hope and laughter under the most horrific circumstances

Three girls huddle together, playing childish games to allay their fears from whatever terror stalks them. There are flashes of light and sounds, followed by sudden blackouts. At first, Theresa Ikoko’s play appears post-apocalyptic. Television screens line the back wall with radio frequencies tuning in and out. A strange structure looms overhead. Information about who they are, where they are hiding, who from, is parcelled out gradually.

You learn that they are three Nigerian friends and schoolgirls living in a forest in 2015. Their captors are never named but you can infer they are part of the insurgent Islamist group, Boko Haram, from the breadcrumbs of backstory. Director Ewa Dina makes this explicit in her programme note when she refers to the Chibok Girls, involving Boko Haram’s mass abduction of schoolgirls in Chibok, Borno State, in 2014.

The Devils review – Ken Russell’s 1971 possessed-nuns tale is a frenzied aria of confrontation and hysteria

Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave put in the performances of their lives in this film originally banned for obscenity that highlights the violence of power

‘I could never be Satan’s boy. I haven’t the humility.” The speaker is Father Urbain Grandier, the 17th-century French priest accused of witchcraft, stylishly played by Oliver Reed, in Ken Russell’s scabrous 1971 classic; it is now restored and rereleased in its complete form after years of censorship. It comes from an era when movies, playing in high-street cinemas, still had the power to shock, to position that shock in the polite cultural mainstream and to compel serious discussion about whether that shock – or, conversely, a ban – was justified.

The Devils is based on a true story of politically directed mass hysteria, adapted by Russell from two literary works: Aldous Huxley’s The Devils of Loudun and John Whiting’s stage play The Devils. Of course it is obscene; obscenity is the glowing sulphurous paint which Russell is applying to the canvas. It is about obscenity – but the obscenity does not reside in the sexualised images of the crucified Christ or naked nuns disporting themselves; it is the violence of authority that is shown to be obscene. The idea of martyrs or heretics being burned at the stake has long been an accepted fact recounted in U-certificate history lessons, and a punishment which survived well into the European enlightenment. Russell shows you what it might actually look like and that is to involve a confrontational assault on good taste.

‘Fear is contagious’: why horror shows are taking over the New York stage

Hit London plays 2:22, Paranormal Activity and A Ghost in Your Ear are now spooking audiences on and off Broadway amid high demand for communal experiences

As we escaped the restrictions of the pandemic, with many also trying to escape the smartphone addiction that was exacerbated by it, there was widespread desire for the in-person communal experience. It was a slow crawl back with casualties along the way but as the Hollywood and Broadway box office return to pre-pandemic levels this year, our craving for IRL thrills appears to be stronger than ever.

It’s why Imax and 4DX formats are breaking records, concert attendance is at a new high according to a mid-year report and the most recently tracked season of New York theatre grossed more than the previous. It also helps to explain why the hottest tickets of the fall are for plays in the most communal genre of all: horror.

Arcola theatre, London
David Edgar’s translation grounds Ibsen’s otherworldly play about a middle-aged architect’s fall from power, but its flaws are too loud to ignore

This outing of Henrik Ibsen’s play, translated by playwright David Edgar, is reassuring after Lila Raicek’s oddly conceived West End version last year starring Ewan McGregor – as well intentioned as its feminist revisionism might have been.

Edgar’s is more faithful to the original in form and spirit (although he compresses three acts into two), and its strengths lie in drawing out the psychological aspects of the ageing, anxious master builder at its centre, whose fall from the heights of worldly acclaim is both real and symbolic in a play that blends both those realms together.

Home Office refused entry to Judith Clark, 77, invited by RSC to speak about restorative justice after her time in prison

Human rights activists and celebrities including the lawyer Helena Kennedy, the actor Harriet Walter and the theatre director Phyllida Lloyd have urged the Home Office to overturn its decision to refuse a visa to a former member of the radical US group the Weather Underground, saying her decades of rehabilitation should count in her favour.

Judith Clark, 77, was the inspiration for Walter’s portrayal of prisoners in the Donmar Warehouse all-female Shakespeare trilogy, including Brutus in Julius Caesar and Prospero in The Tempest.
