The best theatre to stream this month: the Gisèle Pelicot trial becomes an all-star play that ‘just floors you’

An unmissable documentary play, Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia with luminous Isis Hainsworth and ecstatic dance in a Norwegian museum are among November’s highlights

Swiss director Milo Rau’s ripped-from-the-headlines approach to theatre has included shows about wars in Iraq and Congo and the exploitation of migrant workers. His four-hour documentary play (created with Servane Dècle) about the trial of the men who drugged and raped Gisèle Pelicot has been performed around the world and will be staged by the Young Vic at London’s County Hall on 30 November. The production swiftly sold out but will be livestreamed in full. The cast includes Adjoa Andoh, Rosie Jones and Olivia Williams. “It was the act of witnessing that really got me,” said Young Vic boss Nadia Fall of the show. “It isn’t scenes and costumes in a set like a traditional piece of theatre. It is the facts. It just floors you.”

‘Virile star power’: Patrick Stewart’s greatest stage roles, from clowns to kings to wounded lions

With his striking voice, so rich and resonant, the actor blazed through the RSC – and his time in Hollywood only enriched him. Yet he was a great team player, capable of anything, as his double acts with Ian McKellen showed

Patrick Stewart, who has died aged 86, was a classic example of the company actor who becomes a star: a natural Enobarbus who winds up playing Mark Antony. It would be easy to say that he had fame thrust upon him through his roles in Star Trek and X-Men, but I would argue that it was a two-way process. As Peter Bradshaw points out, Stewart brought his RSC-trained gravitas to the screen, but his roles in popular franchises gave him an extra layer of confidence and authority on stage. He became, in short, an even more powerful actor.

I felt a particular fascination with Stewart’s career, since he was in the first play I ever reviewed for a national paper. He was Warwick in George Bernard Shaw’s Saint Joan at the Bristol Old Vic in May 1965 and I was instantly struck by his rich, resonant voice. Once he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966, I followed his progress eagerly. He seemed the perfect team player, capable of anything: Shakespearean clowns such as Touchstone in As You Like It and Launce in The Two Gentlemen of Verona, or more muscular figures such as Cornwall in King Lear and Hector in Troilus and Cressida.

Dafne Keen and Harriet Walter on working with Patrick Stewart: ‘I’ve never seen anyone so ecstatic’

The late actor’s co-stars in Logan and Anthony and Cleopatra remember dog impressions, marching band-conducting and a fervent belief in fun

I had the unbelievable privilege of working with Patrick when I was 11 [in Logan]. He was a man of extraordinary warmth, wit and generosity. He possessed that increasingly rare ability to make everyone around him feel as though they were being let in on something wonderful. To work alongside him was to be reminded, every day, of what it means to love what you do, and to share that love with others. He imparted lessons in a way that was so wise, you didn’t even realise you were being taught.

Jump scares, leather gloves and squeaking moth noises: theatre horror masters on how they make their shows so scary

Whether it’s immersive chiller Blackout or the campily scary 2:22: A Ghost Story, ‘tis the season to be scared witless at the theatre. But what’s the secret to making an audience gasp in terror?

It was 1am. Total darkness. Locking up a wedding venue, Sam Beech’s car sensor went off: there was something behind him. “It went on for half an hour,” the writer and director recalls, “on the front bumper, then round the back. But every time I looked, there was nothing.” It kept going, snuffling around the car. So he stopped looking. “I thought: ‘If I don’t look behind me, it won’t get me.’” Since then, Beech, the creator of one of a plethora of horror shows currently haunting the stage, admits, “I don’t like driving in the dark”.

Beech’s experience was eerily similar to a scene in Andy Nyman’s hit 2010 play Ghost Stories, which Beech had seen four times, so the gnarly end the character had met on stage filled his mind when the sensor went off in the dark. Now, the uncanny experience has fed into his own new horror show Blackout (touring the UK to 27 February), which uses everything that made him so scared that night: the quiet, the absence, the idea of something lurking in the shadows. “It’s the Jaws effect,” says Chris Fisher, the illusions designer behind the stage show of Paranormal Activity (at London Ambassador’s theatre to 27 February, and touring the UK), which had me sheepishly checking under my bed for several nights and stopped just short of nightmares. “It’s scarier to see the fin and hear the music,” Fisher says, “than it is to see the mechanical head of the shark.”

Ceilidh: A New Musical review – a joyous, riotous celebration of Scottish culture gets the audience on its feet

Shoreditch town hall, London
Scott Gilmour and Claire McKenzie’s audience participation musical gets toes tapping and bodies spinning – even if its story lacks a little depth

There’s only one thing you need to know before you dance in a ceilidh, we’re told at the start of this show: “In 2,000 years, no one has ever looked good doing it.” But who notices, or cares, when they’re spinning dizzyingly in a joyful mass of bodies? Certainly not the audience at Shoreditch town hall, as they took to the floor in Scott Gilmour and Claire McKenzie’s interactive new musical.

Staged in the round, with ample space for stripping the willow, Ceilidh is directed by Sam Pinkleton, whose Tony-winning Oh, Mary! proved what he can do with anarchic energy. It began its UK tour at the Pitlochry festival theatre after a short run in the US and feels like an authentic community event. Before curtain-up, actor-musicians mill sociably with the punters on the dancefloor, and by the time the bodhrán rhythms kick off in earnest, every toe is tapping in anticipation.

‘I laughed so hard my Tampax fell out’: Michael Gambon’s pranks revealed by the stars he cracked up

There are even chapters devoted to his hands (“the biggest you’ve ever seen on anybody” – Brian Cox) and similarly enormous feet. But, Gambon being Gambon, there are also dozens of accounts of tomfoolery on and off stage …
Continue reading...

The Sea review – Jennifer Saunders takes fussing over buying curtains to Shakespearean levels

Theatre Royal Bath
Edward Bond’s play about consumerism and the strength of humans in dark times is hugely enlivened by Saunders and her tight-lipped pomposity

When describing his own play, the late playwright Edward Bond said he wanted The Sea to deal with tragedy, be a comedy and end with people being as honest and open as they could. Jonathan Munby’s production – the first major revival in almost 20 years – begins by offering its audience a view that would ordinarily be obscured: we’re plunged underwater to where the seafaring Colin (Elliot Goodhill) hangs suspended from a rope, fighting for his life, as the waves of Luke Halls’ impressive videography engulf him.

It’s a fitting opening sequence for a play that subsequently demands its audience look beneath the surface to find meaning in seemingly trivial interactions. It’s jarring when, come the following scene, we’re flung into a draper’s shop, where Jennifer Saunders’ avaricious, egotistical Mrs Rafi is fussing over curtain material. But Bond understood consumerism as a distraction from the pain and absurdity of life. Similarly, his characters sing their hymns ever louder when there’s gunfire in the distance. They also stage an annual play to raise money for their seaside village’s coastguards, while maintaining distance from any trouble their beneficiaries face on the ground.

Girls review – a story of friendship amidst extreme misogynist violence

Young Vic, London
Recalling Boko Haram’s abduction of schoolgirls in Chibok in 2014, Theresa Ikoko’s fierce and tender play reveals how three teenagers find hope and laughter under the most horrific circumstances

Three girls huddle together, playing childish games to allay their fears from whatever terror stalks them. There are flashes of light and sounds, followed by sudden blackouts. At first, Theresa Ikoko’s play appears post-apocalyptic. Television screens line the back wall with radio frequencies tuning in and out. A strange structure looms overhead. Information about who they are, where they are hiding, who from, is parcelled out gradually.

You learn that they are three Nigerian friends and schoolgirls living in a forest in 2015. Their captors are never named but you can infer they are part of the insurgent Islamist group, Boko Haram, from the breadcrumbs of backstory. Director Ewa Dina makes this explicit in her programme note when she refers to the Chibok Girls, involving Boko Haram’s mass abduction of schoolgirls in Chibok, Borno State, in 2014.

Arcola theatre, London
David Edgar’s translation grounds Ibsen’s otherworldly play about a middle-aged architect’s fall from power, but its flaws are too loud to ignore

This outing of Henrik Ibsen’s play, translated by playwright David Edgar, is reassuring after Lila Raicek’s oddly conceived West End version last year starring Ewan McGregor – as well intentioned as its feminist revisionism might have been.

Edgar’s is more faithful to the original in form and spirit (although he compresses three acts into two), and its strengths lie in drawing out the psychological aspects of the ageing, anxious master builder at its centre, whose fall from the heights of worldly acclaim is both real and symbolic in a play that blends both those realms together.

The Pianist review – Władysław Szpilman’s Holocaust memoir retold with his own music

Park theatre, London
This adaptation is perhaps too smooth but is well-staged and performed, and draws strong feeling from the pianist’s compositions

The idea of turning the survival story of the Polish pianist Władysław Szpilman into a musical might, on paper, seem distasteful given the stark subject matter of the Holocaust. There is risk of triteness, too, in the light of Roman Polanski’s acclaimed film, starring Adrien Brody, based on Szpilman’s celebrated memoir.

But those who are acquainted with both those retellings of Szpilman’s second world war experiences will still find something new and affecting here. The form of the musical becomes meaningful through its use of Szpilman’s own compositions. Thom Southerland, who has adapted Szpilman’s book and directs, creates an atmospheric chamber piece, with actors playing instruments, including a piano that twirls on and off stage.

Derren Brown turns into Nostradamus – and I predict you’ll submit to one gasp-inducing stunt after another

Apollo theatre, London
Prophecies are impossibly fulfilled by the superstar who takes his cue from the legendary French seer in his show Only Human

Do we have free will – or are the words I am about to write, the four stars twinkling atop this review, pre-ordained? That’s the stuff Derren Brown conjures with in his new show Only Human, which takes its inspiration from Nostradamus’s ability to foresee the future. Nostradamus used divination techniques – and so Brown engineers a stunt in which his audience, en masse, dowse a waterway in the building next door. Nostradamus had a near-death experience – and so, in one remarkable sequence, Brown orchestrates something similar for a hypnotised member of his crowd.

This of course is territory Brown has always made his own: strip away the free will rhetoric and Nostradamus folderol, and artful dodger Derren stands revealed, doing the same mentalism and mesmerism tricks as ever. By the interval (and acknowledging that we’ve been spoiled by his jaw-dropping back catalogue), this current collection of stunts doesn’t feel all that high-powered. Predicting an audience member’s yes/no answers to a series of questions is amazing, yes, but low stakes. And that water divination set-piece misfires: only one of his three selected dowsers is up to the task, and the venue’s seating is too cramped for the mass mobility the routine requires.

Swoon! London City Ballet are positively glowing in a night of dreams – and ghosts from dance history

Sadler’s Wells, London
Alina Cojocaru astonishes in John Neumeier’s Ghost Light, an ethereal meditation on time, while Glen Tetley’s Firebird has much to cherish

A ghost light is the name for a single lamp left on stage when a theatre is dark, and one glows throughout John Neumeier’s ballet Ghost Light. Also never not glowing is Alina Cojocaru, superlative ballerina and guest dancer with London City Ballet, who has a longtime working relationship with Neumeier and his Hamburg Ballet – with whom this work was originally created in 2020.

When Cojocaru materialises onstage in silence, so ethereal it’s almost mystical, she is like a ghost of Swan Lake’s Odette, wings fluttering, eyes half closed, lost in a memory. Cojocaru’s divine delicacy embodies all of the romance of ballet, until suddenly her steps glitch, she stumbles over a chair and comes to. The stage is a place of dreams, for all the dancers who have crossed its boards and will continue to do so (superstition says that ghost lamps also allow spirits of former dancers to return to the stage). Neumeier evokes some of these dances in this piece, from a stray sylph upstage, to earnest solos, sparky allegro and two young men in a tender duet, passing each other sometimes in parallel worlds, sometimes in moments of connection.

Stranger things turn an English village upside down in Max Porter’s rural noir Lanny

Bristol Old Vic
A family are just getting used to their new home in this haunting drama when a parallel world emerges

Overheard in the auditorium during the interval: it’s like Tales of the Unexpected meets Jackanory. But if those references are dated by several decades, they go some way to summing up the strange mix of elements in this drama about a boy who goes missing from a village, and the ancient myth of a “green man” who might have something to do with it.

But then, Max Porter’s novel, on which it is based, weaves so many seemingly incongruent parts together to create its own beautiful brand of rural noir. It might be better described as The Missing meets This Country meets Stranger Things, except the Upside Down here is English countryside.

Flo & Joan: With Feeling review – sisters turn an old rock setlist into hilariously neurotic songs

Shepherd’s Bush Empire, London
Richly wrought lyrical wit and sumptuous harmonies enhance the duo’s clever new show – along with plenty of backchat

The last time Flo & Joan played Shepherd’s Bush Empire, they found a setlist on stage left by beloved indie-rock band the Feeling on the previous night. It made the sisters contemplate their own relationship to the music industry. Are Flo & Joan a proper band or doomed for ever to remain “musical comedy”? The problem with which, they deadpan here, is that “no one takes it seriously”. Cue this new show, its structure inspired by that chance discovery. Tonight, the duo play a suite of new songs that, title by title, matches the setlist of the band who preceded them four years ago.

And so goes the first half of With Feeling, which by turns delivers on and subverts that challenge – and proves handsomely entertaining either way. In the sisters’ hands, Fill My Little World becomes a neurotic number about the surfeit of stuff (cheap food, fast fashion, AI slop). Never Be Lonely returns to a favoured topic, Flo & Joan’s toxic co-dependency – with an added sight gag involving Joan (AKA Rosie Dempsey)’s questionable trumpet skills.
Getting Ziggy with it: David Bowie’s alter egos inspire dance show that will transform his songs

Subject to Change: A Dance for David Bowie will explore how the musician ‘practised a form of artistic reincarnation’, says choreographer Marcos Morau

‘Let’s dance,” sang David Bowie in 1983, commanding: “Put on your red shoes and dance the blues.” That call is to be answered – with footwear TBC – by an international dance production featuring new choral arrangements of songs from throughout his career.

Subject to Change: A Dance for David Bowie will be staged at Sadler’s Wells in London in autumn 2028 after a world premiere in Luxembourg. It will visit Tokyo in 2029. The show will explore how Bowie “practised a form of artistic reincarnation” according to Spanish choreographer Marcos Morau who is taking inspiration from the superstar’s transformations into personas such as Aladdin Sane and the Thin White Duke.

The Snowman gets a hi-tech rebuild – with help from Raging Bull and a ‘Hot Santa’

More than 30 years after Raymond Briggs’ story became a stage show, director Will Tuckett and Paddington designer Tahra Zafar have refreshed it and added a hunky Saint Nick

“Top of the show!” says Will Tuckett. On the grand piano, musical director Andy Massey strikes up an arpeggio that could melt the most frozen of hearts: “We’re walking in the air …” It is The Snowman, of course. Raymond Briggs’ 1978 picture book was animated for the screen in 1982 with a score by Howard Blake and became a hit stage show in 1993, an annual outing for Birmingham Rep ever since. Now it’s getting a reboot, directed by Tuckett, former Royal Ballet dancer turned choreographer and director of everything from the National Ballet of Japan’s Nutcracker to a stage adaptation of In the Night Garden.

We’re in a studio in Birmingham. As the overture plays, a large wooden box in the centre of the room opens like the cover of a book, to become a house. There’s a kitchen, a couple at the table with a pot of tea and an endearing puppet cat winding round their legs. Upstairs, a boy wakes up, looking forward to Christmas.

After 25 years, Australian dance star Lucy Guerin bows out of the company she founded

The choreographer said goodbye to Lucy Guerin Inc by dancing in public for the first time in 13 years – which she found ‘incredibly confronting’

Get our weekend culture and lifestyle email

If there is one thing the professional dancer learns never to expect, it’s longevity. The physical demands on the body and increasing risk of injury tend to necessitate short careers. Melbourne-based choreographer Lucy Guerin has certainly bucked that trend, with a CV spanning decades and several international awards under her belt. But after 25 years at the helm of her eponymous company, she is now stepping away, conferring her artistic directorship on choreographer Melanie Lane.

Before she left, Guerin returned to the stage for an exquisite solo show, Place Dances, inside Melbourne’s Buxton Contemporary art gallery. It was the first time she had danced publicly in 13 years. “I have found it incredibly confronting, to be honest,” she says, hours before the premiere. “As a dancer, you always remember in your body what it feels like to do an arabesque or a jump. And part of me thought I could still do all those things if I just got back in the studio and trained a bit.” She laughs at her own hubris. “But I’m afraid that wasn’t the case.”

Sign up for our rundown of must-reads, pop culture and tips for the weekend, every Sunday morning
Continue reading...

From a VR gay sauna to the gothic pile that inspired Cluedo – Fierce festival storms back

Venues across Birmingham
As Britain’s longest-running live art festival returns, get ready for late-night artist dinners, a show in a swimming pool and Faye Driscoll’s incredible rotating disintegration

The phrase “two things can be true” is a frequent refrain in popular psychology and it’s also a frequent response, I find, to witnessing the farther reaches of live art. Hmm, is this performance confusingly self-indulgent or utterly profound? Sometimes it can be both. In fact, it’s not just two things that can be true, it’s as many things as there are people in the audience, since this is all about the live subjective experience, in the moment; presence and connection.

Launched in 1998, Fierce is Britain’s longest-running live art festival. For one week it takes over Birmingham’s conventional theatres alongside unconventional spaces, especially in ex-industrial Digbeth, which is fast becoming a creative hub. Also on the bill this year: late-night artist dinners, a show in a swimming pool, and a six-hour performance jam at a grand gothic hall that was apparently the inspiration for Cluedo.

As The Lucky Son picks up where Cunxin’s 2003 memoir left off, the renowned Chinese Australian ballet dancer reflects on sacrifices made by his wife, his years at a stockbroker, and his success leading the Queensland Ballet

Get our weekend culture and lifestyle email

Some people live such extraordinary lives that a single autobiography simply won’t suffice. Li Cunxin has now written two. The renowned ballet dancer and former artistic director of Queensland Ballet had hoped he was finished writing his story after the phenomenal international success of his 2003 memoir, Mao’s Last Dancer. But life had other plans.

“Actually, I had signed a contract with Penguin Random House for a follow-up,” Cunxin says, from his home in Brisbane. “It was going to be about the lives of my brothers and friends in China, and the ways the country has changed over time. But then I was offered the job at Queensland Ballet and I had to dedicate all my time to that. I don’t think they were expecting [the sequel] to take 14 years!”

Standup Jon Richardson on turning his dark teenage diaries into a tearjerking memoir: ‘I couldn’t sugarcoat those years’

While facing grief, illness and a very public breakup, the comic reached for his diaries – and found a happy kid who spiralled into despair. Inspired by a Nobel laureate, he wrote a frank, funny book about that boy and what he grew into

It begins on Christmas Day, 1996: “It’s been a lovely day … I realised how much I love my family.” It ends three years later: “I’m lying on the floor in floods of tears and all I want to do is die.” Say what you like about adolescence but it is nothing if not an emotional tumult. “If I’d known as a teenager,” says the comedian Jon Richardson ruefully, “that I’d one day write a book about them, I couldn’t have bookended my teenage diaries with better quotes to show what a storm of shit those years can be.”

The book is The Teenage Diaries of a Stand-Up Comedian, and it has been two years in the making. Two years that, if not quite the hormonal rollercoaster the book itself records, have been quite the ride. The project is borne of a crossroads moment in the Lancashire man’s midlife, after he experienced bereavement, serious illness among family and friends, and the breakdown of his marriage to fellow comic Lucy Beaumont. The last was an inevitably very public ending, splayed across the tabloids, to a relationship which itself played out in public, courtesy of the couple’s acclaimed mockumentary about their domestic arrangements, Meet the Richardsons.

Rowan Atkinson to bring Mr Bean, Blackadder and more to West End in new show

The actor will perform famous TV sketches – as well as new material created with Richard Curtis, Ben Elton and Howard Goodall – in Rowan Live, which opens in February

Rowan Atkinson will return to the stage next year to play Blackadder, Mr Bean and other comic characters from across his career in a West End show, Rowan Live. The production, which will have a short run of 30 performances, is to feature new routines as well as his famous sketches from TV shows including Not the Nine O’Clock News.

“It is 40 years since I last did a comedy sketch show in the West End,” said Atkinson. “I thought it would be fun to perform again the sketches that began it all for myself and [writer] Richard Curtis, and in which my most well-known characters originated, alongside some surprise new material written especially for this show.” He and Curtis will be collaborating once more with Blackadder writer Ben Elton and its composer Howard Goodall.

Sindhu Vee: ‘Makeup, music to feel reckless, two pieces of milk chocolate – and then I go on’

The banker turned standup turned actor shares her preshow rituals, what’s behind her ‘very swanky hairstyle’ and her joke about Indian Santa Claus

How did you go from investment banker to standup comedian?
I didn’t go on purpose from one to the other. I transitioned from banking to stay-at-home mother to standup comedian. There was absolutely no previous thought process. I got on stage almost by chance, and a lot of alcohol was involved. Standup found me, and I’ve never left it alone.

What inspired your latest show, Swanky?
It’s just the continuing story of Sindhu Vee! The trials and tribulations, the victories and losses. My parents passed away in quick succession recently and, in their absence, I realised I had to champion myself. I took a long hard look at my life and I thought: actually it’s not going that badly. A word my father used for things that were good but kind of like mysterious and cool was swanky. I suppose one could say that my life is swanky. Why not? Then I got a very swanky hairstyle and a dress for the poster. In the absence of my parents, I had to do it. They were big champions of me.

Sindhu Vee: Swanky is on tour in the UK until 17 April
Continue reading...

A new start after 60: Menopausal and out of work, I sat crying in my car. Now, I’m a standup comedian

When Barbara Scully tried to get a job after years as a stay-at-home mum, no one would hire her. So she made her own work as a writer and broadcaster – and soon found herself on TV and stage

If anyone had told Barbara Scully five years ago that she would soon be enjoying her “sixth career” – this time as a standup comedian, or comic storyteller – she would have laughed in their face. “But once you get to 60, you realise that failure isn’t a big deal,” she says. “As long as nobody’s going to die, that’s grand.”

Scully, who lives in Dublin, is now performing her one-woman show Because I’m Worth It around Ireland to capacity audiences of up to 200 people. “I’m on a mission to try to tell women in particular not to fear getting older, to embrace it, to push back against all the bullshit about how you should be fighting ageing,” she says. “The more women like me who are willing to stand up and say: ‘This is me and I am 64 and I’m not really bothered about spending my time and money and energy on trying to look younger …’” She trails off. “I’m actually spending my time and money and energy doing stuff that makes me happy.”

Nation’s favourite play makes London comeback amid renewed debate about future of humanities teaching

The History Boys is to return to the West End for the first time in two decades, with a warning from its director of an “almost terminal decline” in humanities teaching in state schools.

Nicholas Hytner, who directed Alan Bennett’s play at the National Theatre and its 2006 film adaptation, said the themes of education, history and the value of literature for its own sake felt especially relevant amid renewed debate about what schools should teach.

The play that changed my life: ‘I was the badass queen in Titus Andronicus – we did it like A Nightmare on Elm Street’

Shakespeare’s bloody revenge-fest is full of horror and grotesquerie but the camaraderie of performing it with a youth theatre had an upbeat effect

Titus Andronicus has to be among William Shakespeare’s worst plays. In fact TS Eliot called it “one of the stupidest and most uninspired plays ever written”. Yet it holds a very special place in my heart. It’s a bloody revenge-fest in which each act of violence is more grotesque than the last. Titus Andronicus returns from war with “barbarous” Tamora, “Queen of the Goths”, as his prisoner. She stealthily proceeds to kill and destroy his family, and when he discovers this, he murders her sons and serves them up to her in a pie. The play ends with gudgeons of fake blood and a sea of carnage. In Shakespeare’s day it was a huge hit, a kind of slasher film of the 16th century.

Plays are very powerful things and I have spent my life watching them and writing them. Some have been revelatory but none has affected me like Titus Andronicus. It was the first play, outside of school, that I was ever in – so I suppose this is about the transformative power of youth theatre.

‘Jelliness is my life motto’: jackpot theatre prize winner Jaha Koo on kimchi, K-pop and his robotic eel

Feted for cooking up shows that can be mouthwatering as well as thought-provoking, the artist discusses his fusion of South Korean and European culture

When I meet Jaha Koo in Oslo, where he has just been honoured with the prestigious International Ibsen award, I hand him a congratulatory packet of Haribo. The alternative would be a jar of kimchi but one of the many things you learn from Koo’s captivating theatre shows is that air travel and fermented vegetables can be a disastrous combo. When he moved to Berlin from South Korea with 10kg of his grandma’s finest kimchi, it became “bloated like a dead whale” and exploded on his balcony. His new neighbours were unimpressed.

In Koo’s current touring production, Haribo Kimchi, he examines how this unlikely fusion of two foods represents his cultural identity. He does so while preparing an onstage banquet for two lucky audience members. Despite spending many years in Europe, where Haribo gummies originated around a century ago, Koo still finds himself considered foremost as Korean by Europeans. But when he returns to his original homeland he is not always seen as Korean either.
