Dafne Keen and Harriet Walter on working with Patrick Stewart: ‘I’ve never seen anyone so ecstatic’

The late actor’s co-stars in Logan and Anthony and Cleopatra remember dog impressions, marching band-conducting and a fervent belief in fun

I had the unbelievable privilege of working with Patrick when I was 11 [in Logan]. He was a man of extraordinary warmth, wit and generosity. He possessed that increasingly rare ability to make everyone around him feel as though they were being let in on something wonderful. To work alongside him was to be reminded, every day, of what it means to love what you do, and to share that love with others. He imparted lessons in a way that was so wise, you didn’t even realise you were being taught.

From Shakespeare to Star Trek: Patrick Stewart’s extraordinary life – The Latest

Tributes have poured in for Patrick Stewart, who has died aged 86. The distinguished actor had a long and varied career that began on stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company before going on to global stardom on the screen in the Star Trek and X-Men franchises. Stewart was born in Yorkshire in 1940, and had spoken of a challenging childhood marred by alcoholism and domestic violence – something he campaigned against for much of his life. Lucy Hough speaks to the Guardian film critic Peter Bradshaw – watch on YouTube

--

Watch the full Patrick Stewart sketch: what has the ECHR ever done for us?

Sir Patrick Stewart obituary

Distinguished stage and screen actor who became a global star in the Star Trek and X-Men franchises

One way of looking at the extraordinary career of Patrick Stewart, who has died aged 86, is that it went full circle – from the Royal Shakespeare Company in the 1960s and 70s, through global stardom in the twin movie franchises of Star Trek and X-Men, then back to the RSC and the West End stage.

There was plenty more besides, but Stewart’s touching performance in 2005 in David Mamet’s A Life in the Theatre, at the Apollo in London, expressed the actor’s adaptability to a dressing room mood of generational change and evolution in the traditions of live performance.

Middlemarch review – World’s Greatest Novel hurtles from deathbed panto to jolting marital tragedy

Swan theatre, Stratford-Upon-Avon
This RSC staging of the sprawling middle England masterpiece has humour, compassion – and even George Eliot herself as a character

Is there a literary achievement greater than George Eliot’s stonking masterpiece? Not according to a Guardian poll, topped by this sprawling, contemplative and profound book about marriage, moral goodness, debt, death, God and everything in between. So how do you adapt its nonpareil greatness for the stage without flattening the moral, philosophical and psychological complexities?

Andrew Davies had a go at it with his watchable enough 1994 television costume drama, retelling Eliot’s story about provincial life, in six parts. A mere six-parts, you might say, for a novel that is about 900 pages. While its timeline only spans three years in the life of a fictional Midlands town, it juggles multiple storylines and perspectives, weaves the local with the big socio-political backdrops of its age and follows the trajectories of characters with such detail that it becomes hard to replicate in another form.

There are even chapters devoted to his hands (“the biggest you’ve ever seen on anybody” – Brian Cox) and similarly enormous feet. But, Gambon being Gambon, there are also dozens of accounts of tomfoolery on and off stage …
Continue reading...

As You Like It review – there are no mere players in the RSC’s ravishing all-male escapade

Royal Shakespeare theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon
With a WWE-style wrestling match, playful eroticism and a fine cast including Hamilton’s Jonathan Groff, this is an exquisite production

‘To liberty, and not to banishment,” exclaims Celia to Rosalind, the exile who finds freedom in her disguise as a man. It is a key statement in Shakespeare’s transformative, gender-bending pastoral comedy, just before the usurping Duke Frederick’s court is replaced by the romance of the Forest of Arden. That big reveal brought a prolonged technical difficulty on the opening night of director Daniel Evans’ all-male production, which was paused for well over an hour so it could be fixed. The technical hitch aside, it is a ravishing staging, with stunning visual effects.

There is little comedy or light in the severe court, which contains an intimidating physicality to reflect Duke Frederick’s thuggery, with slaps, shoves and a magnificently constructed WWE-style wrestling match, complete with bunny girls keeping score. It is replaced by Arden’s verdant hills on Anisha Fields’ exquisite set, so beautiful they verge on the voluptuous. The black Elizabethan gowns of the court, Puritan-like but flecked with ornament, and designed by Colin Richmond, are stunning too, as is the chequered shadow-play of the early scenes, in Ryan Day’s lighting design. The breathtaking contrast of the switch between worlds is inevitably lost, following the long wait of the technical problem, but is nonetheless beautifully envisioned.

RSC embraces ‘hugely challenging’ task of staging Susanna Clarke’s Piranesi and Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway

The Royal Shakespeare Company announces ambitious adaptations of novels in season that includes Elizabeth Debicki as Richard II and Damien Molony as Coriolanus

The Royal Shakespeare Company is to stage two highly experimental novels, written almost 100 years apart and posing serious conundrums for adaptation, according to co-artistic directors Daniel Evans and Tamara Harvey. Virginia Woolf’s 1925 “day in the life” classic Mrs Dalloway and Susanna Clarke’s otherworldly 2020 award-winner Piranesi grapple with what they described as “a century-old theatrical preoccupation: the exploration of inner life on stage”.

Harvey will direct Mrs Dalloway, adapted by Zoe Cooper, and said it would be “hugely challenging” to “bring the inside out” from Woolf’s novel, which uses stream of consciousness as the eponymous heroine gives a party whose guests’ thoughts intermingle with her own. Cooper, said Harvey, has “created this extraordinary sense that we as an audience are flowing in and out of people’s minds, in and out of different moments in their histories”. Mrs Dalloway opens in the Swan theatre in April and will be the third major adaptation of the novel staged in England within a year: Kit Green’s one-woman performance recently toured and Holly Robinson’s new version opens at the Yard in London in March.

First Encounters: Julius Caesar review – so thrilling it kept a hall full of teens in pin-drop silence

Ormiston Bushfield Academy, Peterborough
An intro to Shakespeare doesn’t get any better than the RSC’s revival of Phyllida Lloyd’s all-female prison-set production led by Harriet Walter, which is touring schools

The auditorium is stripped bare – a repurposed hall whose ascending seating resembles an amphitheatre but with plastic chairs. This show could pass for a school production, in appearance, if you didn’t know better. The Royal Shakespeare Company’s revival of Phyllida Lloyd’s all-female Julius Caesar, which originally ran at the Donmar Warehouse in 2012, is now touring secondary schools.

We are in Peterborough, but also in Rome and in a women’s prison: Shakespeare is framed within an incarceration story, which occasionally impinges on it with interruptions from guards and prison protocols.

My friend and colleague John Bruce, who has died aged 88, was a director of television drama with a flair for bringing literary and historical works to the screen. He had International Emmy nominations for The Reason of Things (1981), and for The Woman in White (1982), a beautifully recreated five-part adaptation of the Wilkie Collins novel, with Ian Richardson, Jenny Seagrove and Diana Quick perfectly cast.

Later came Parnell & the Englishwoman (1991), Hugh Leonard’s dramatisation of the affair that brought about the downfall of the Irish nationalist politician, starring Trevor Eve and Francesca Annis. John admirably combined political intrigue and romantic passion with lush rolling fields, country manors and period costume.

Game of Thrones, Shakespearean? What fools these mortals be!

The Mad King may bring more dynastic disputes and dotty despots to the RSC – but a ‘mayhap’ or a riddling aphorism does not a Shakespeare play make

As a latecomer to Game of Thrones, I am struck by how many people tell me it is “very Shakespearean”. It is as if they need to justify its heady escapism and heavy reliance on bonking and brutality. But its debt to the Bard – apart from the rivalry between the houses of Lannister and Stark – rests mainly on the casting. Watching the first 11 episodes, I noticed four Lears past and to come (Julian Glover, David Bradley, Oliver Ford-Davies and Roger Allam), a Macbeth (Sean Bean), a Hamlet and Henry V (Iain Glen) and a Cassius (Michelle Fairley) among many others.

Because it is presented by the Royal Shakespeare Company and staged by Dominic Cooke, who memorably directed The Hollow Crown on television, we shall doubtless hear the same arguments about Game of Thrones: The Mad King at Stratford. But, although there are frequent nods to Shakespeare, they totally lack the resonance of the original. Our first sight of Michael Shaeffer’s King Aerys with a white beard, a leafy crown and no shoes almost screams “Lear on the heath”. But where Lear gradually declines into insanity (“O fool I shall go mad”) and comes out the other side, Shaeffer’s Aerys is a dotty despot from start to finish. The use of tournaments to settle dynastic disputes also reminds us of the opening of Richard II – but where that event is aborted and ultimately causes the king’s downfall, here the image of embattled jousters is endlessly repeated.

Calcutta!, she averred that “I don’t mind being naked on stage, but I draw the line at being naked with bad material.”

In her significant, wide-ranging stage career, Ballantine, who has died aged 96, knew where to find the real action and was consistently drawn, over 70 years, to the highest quality company of writers, directors and actors at the Old Vic, the Royal Court, the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, appearing in plays by John Osborne, Simon Gray, Joe Orton and David Storey.

‘Makes Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey seem understated’ – critics weigh up Game of Thrones: The Mad King

‘Spectacular’ or ‘stolid’? The reviews are in for the Royal Shakespeare Company’s prequel to George RR Martin’s fantasy blockbuster

You don’t need to read the entrails of a raven to guess the target of the subtitle The Mad King: the various Brutuses plotting his fall conclude that the “paranoid and delusional” monarch will destroy their civilisation. The focus, though, is not just Trumpian. Macmillan references two wider international crises – the instability of heads of state and the weather – and a UK national concern: the endurance of a royal bloodline. The RSC’s patron, King Charles III, might skip this one.

Mark Lawson, the Guardian

The main auditorium has been reconfigured so that the audience presses in on all sides with the action predominantly confined to a cruciform stage with mighty gates at the far end and a coronet-style arch at its centre. The opening wordless sequence, featuring an inordinate procession of arrivals (there’s a cast of 36), conjures a due aura of wonder and clanging foreboding. Most strikingly, a number of characters enter on horseback; these magnificent metallic steeds are operated, as in War Horse, by an obliging trio of handlers.

The great achievement of this reimagining of George RR Martin’s universe by writer Duncan Macmillan and director Dominic Cooke is that it ties up plot points from the Song of Ice and Fire franchise in ways likely to satisfy avid fans of the novels and the subsequent TV series but simultaneously creates a narrative clear and engaging enough to entrance the only partially affiliated or the complete newbie.

Designer Chloe Lamford creates a visionary space, where dragon puppets and vast stomping horses stalk in shadowy slo mo like they’re embedded deep in this world’s collective memory. Silk-skirted courtly dances and unwieldy but spectacular joust scenes show how these dynasties enjoy themselves, before the noble blood starts to fall.

This prequel to a blood-soaked dynastic saga wanders on for so long that it makes Christopher Nolan’s journey into Greek mythology seem a model of understatement. There’s no reason why the RSC shouldn’t bring Martin’s epic books to the stage in Game of Thrones: The Mad King, but if this stolid production gives hardcore GoT fans a chance to hunt for “Easter eggs”, it seldom comes close to matching the grim aura of the TV series.

The first half of Cooke’s superbly staged, spectacular production has the feel of a dynamic Bayeux Tapestry: a stunning pageant of medieval stop-motion animation. But after the interval, the plot takes off. Sparks fly romantically and dramatically, which is just as well because, at three hours 45 minutes, it’s almost as long as Hamlet.

Game of Thrones: The Mad King review – an action-packed saga of dry ice and fire

Royal Shakespeare theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon
This prequel to the TV series has one joust after another, spectacular stagecraft and plenty of modern resonance

During the RSC’s 65 years, numerous Lears have lost their minds and frequent Caesars been slaughtered by their courts. Now, though, a tyrant new to its stages faces both fates. He is King Aerys II Targaryen, ancestor of one warring bloodline in Game of Thrones, the dramatisation of George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series of fantasy novels that helped TV streamers’ rise to global domination during eight HBO seasons from 2011 to 2019.

Some may balk at an institution named for England’s greatest dramatist staging an American drama franchise. There is, though, a compelling economic imperative: rising costs due to current wars (a frequent problem for Martin’s ancient oligarchs too) and Covid-era debts now exacerbated by paying back government loans means that the RSC could use another big commercial transfer – as its musical Matilda may not be immortal.

Peter Gill obituary

Acclaimed playwright and director whose reputation was forged at the Royal Court theatre in London

Peter Gill, who has died aged 86, was a rarity in British theatre in being an accomplished director of his own plays; he wrote them, you felt, mainly so that he could also direct them and thus maintain the vision and the poetry of his writing in their physical manifestation.

His reputation as a meticulous realist with unimpeachable good taste in casting was forged at the Royal Court in London where, in 1968, he made his name overnight by directing a trilogy of virtually unknown plays by DH Lawrence. For the first time, said Christopher Hampton, the novelist was revealed as “one of the alarmingly few really interesting early 20th-century stage writers”.

What, no sequinned crooners? How cruises became the home for world class theatre

Forget cheesy acts, these days cruise ships boast the cutting edge tech to stage hip West End productions and Olivier award-winning musicals – and young people are loving it

The phrase “cruise ship entertainment” conjures vivid images, even to those who have never set foot on an oceangoing vessel. Starry backcloths, sequined frocks, tunes and croons from yesteryear, the lite-ent values of the 1970s preserved in aspic. Perhaps those stereotypes held water way back when the singer Jane McDonald ruled the reality TV waves. But – lazy thinking ahoy! – do they still?

Look at the shows currently a-sail on the high seas, from the Olivier award-winning 9/11 musical Come from Away, to hip theatre-maker Emma Rice’s acclaimed Brief Encounter. And look at the onboard production values, which “way surpass what you see in London theatres”, says Susannah Daley of Peel Entertainment, which provides shows for the Ambassador cruise line. “These ships are now being built with theatre in mind, to a really high spec, to hold between 600 and 1,000 people. What can be produced in them is pretty phenomenal.” Producer David Pugh, a veteran of the West End who has collaborated with Cunard cruises, says: “These are probably the most technical theatres, in terms of lighting and sound, that you’ve ever seen outside of the best theatres in the world.”
