Trafficking industry hit as ‘sex worker’ chatbots fool thousands

Campaign to lure men seeking to buy sex triggers big decline in online searches in Seattle

Sex trafficking in a US city was significantly disrupted by a non-profit group that deployed decoy chatbots in conversations with tens of thousands of men.

During a two-year period, Seattle Against Slavery posted fake online adverts that connected people with chatbots that initially posed as sex workers, before delivering a deterrence message. The campaign, which also involved placing more than 2m Google adverts warning people of the risks of buying sex online, led to a 50% decline in online searches for keywords such as “teen escort”.

The anti-GM lobby appears to be taking a page out of the Climategate playbook

Climate change is real and GM technology is safe, but those in denial want to undermine the public understanding of science with misinformation and pseudo-debate

Barely a week goes by, it seems, without some new attack on science. For years, oil and coal lobbies have orchestrated assaults on climate scientists, while the religious right continues to oppose the teaching of evolution in US schools, questioning the basic tenets of evolutionary biology.

Denialism does its damage by driving a wedge between science and society, undermining public understanding of science with misinformation and confusing pseudo-debate. The effects can be seen not just in climate change mitigation efforts, but in peoples’ health – witness the recent US upsurge in childhood measles concentrated in areas where there is opposition to vaccines. No wonder the latest survey of scientists by the Pew Research Center found scientists increasingly pessimistic about how their work is viewed in the wider society.

What does the mathematical model of accuracy of research papers say and is CIA studying climate control as a potential weapon? Ian Sample reports from the AAAS meeting in San Jose
Ian Sample reports from the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in San Jose, California.

Ian speaks to John Ioannidis, professor of health research and policy at Stanford School of Medicine, about his 2005 paper, "Why Most Published Research Findings Are False". Can we trust the claims made in new scientific research findings? And how useful is peer review in practice?

Images of beheaded queen were destroyed after her death in 1536, leaving only one contemporary likeness

She won the heart of King Henry VIII, divided the church and lost her head. But nearly 500 years after Anne Boleyn met her death, only one uncontested portrait of her remains.

The concerted effort to erase her from history was thorough, leaving only a battered lead disc as a contemporary likeness, the Moost Happi medal in the British Museum in London.

Medical students were so numerous in Georgian London they had to share cadavers, study of autopsy practices reveals

For physicians teaching in Georgian London, the solution was never in question. Faced with a shortage of bodies to dissect, they chopped up cadavers and handed parts out.

The sheer number of students passing through London’s medical schools in the mid 18th century made it the only city where resourceful doctors had to share out bodies, often acquired from dubious sources.

More teenagers trying e-cigarettes than tobacco, US study says

Some experts concerned that vaping may be pathway to nicotine addiction, but others say it is less dangerous than smoking

More teenagers are trying or using e-cigarettes than tobacco products, according to a US study that has prompted fresh concerns among some scientists about a new generation of nicotine addicts. The report is the first to claim such high rates of e-cigarette use among 12- to 18-year-olds, though the study did not distinguish between those who had had one puff and never tried them again and more regular users.

“This is an early warning sign, not the final story,” Wilson Compton, deputy director of the US National Institute on Drug Abuse, said at an American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in San Jose.

Coastal communities dumping 8m tonnes of plastic in oceans every year

China ranked top polluter as figures suggest total plastic litter ending up in the seas could rise tenfold by 2025

Coastal populations put about 8m tonnes of plastic rubbish into the oceans in 2010, an annual figure that could double over the next decade without major improvements in waste management efforts, scientists warn.

The mountain of plastic litter, including bags, food packaging and toys, was equivalent to five full shopping bags of debris for every foot of coastline bordering nearly 200 countries the team studied.

Alien search won't doom planet Earth, say scientists who want to contact ET

Fears over new Seti plan to repeatedly broadcast greetings to habitable planets for hundreds of years dismissed as paranoia

Fears that a major program to contact alien life could spell disaster for planet Earth were dismissed as “paranoid” on Thursday by scientists who hope to beam messages to distant worlds from powerful radio telescopes.

Researchers at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (Seti) Institute in California want to broadcast greetings to potentially habitable planets in the hope of receiving a reply, but the proposal has met with serious objections from critics, including the cosmologist Stephen Hawking, who claim that yelling into space is reckless.

Deepening gulf between public and scientific views is the greatest problem facing scientists, says Alan Leshner, chief executive of American Association for the Advancement of Science

Public tensions over the progress of modern science are at their most intense for decades and threaten to undermine efforts to better human lives, warns one of the most senior scientists in the US.

A raft of issues have left much of the public alienated from the latest scientific thinking and fuelled the rise of groups that misrepresent science to push their own agendas, said Alan Leshner, chief executive of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world’s largest general scientific society.

Becoming a father linked to reduced testosterone in men – and less sex

Lower levels of testosterone may help men focus more on family commitments and less on looking for new sexual partners
Researchers have found evidence – if evidence were needed – that men have less sex after becoming a father for the first time.

A study of more than 400 young men in the Philippines found that their sex lives declined significantly when they had their first child. The fall in sexual activity was associated with the men's testosterone levels, which are known to fall when men start families, but the latest research shows that the greater the fall in testosterone, the less sex men reported.

Children whose parents speak to them least fare worst in language tests, lagging behind by up to six months at age two
Reading bedtime stories to babies and talking to them from birth boosts their brain power and sets them up for success at school, researchers say.

Studies on babies and toddlers found that striking differences emerged in their vocabularies and language processing skills as early as 18 months old.
